Because you can see the top from the road, i think people get the impression they can just walk in and out, without really understanding the weather conditions at the top, and how quickly they can change. Never good news.

You could have sheltered in place for a week in it if you really had to.

I can only imagine that they were caught in a blizzard at the top, decided to try to descend anyway, got stuck in the dark in a blizzard and couldn't work out how to get either up or down.
