Archery is fun. Target shooting, 3D courses, hunting, traditional, compound, all are welcome.

sadly, the flow of the conversation of the thread is controlled by like one person who hates bow hunting and is an avid olympic archery fan

Arrow retrieved from a kill? Deer?
>>

My first ever shot on a deer, a little button buck. I shot just in front of his brisket and nicked him I suppose, I tracked him for a mile and a half with no signs of stopping or slowing down

QRD on how to choose target arrows? I'm using a 25lbs Black Hunter longbow.
>>
I'm new(ish) to archery. Going to a local nonprofit range like every other week, not making much progress. I can't shoot in my backyard cause I'm just in a suburban neighborhood and I think it's against code and not sure if I could figure out a safe way to do it even if it were allowed.

I have a 40lb takedown longbow that's pretty lightweight and packable. I kinda want to take it on hikes / backpacks and just target shoot inawoods as an activity to pass the time around camp. I know the redneck yayhoos go and shoot their guns in the woods around here, so I suppose a little target practice with a bow isn't as bad. But I guess I'm not sure - what to shoot at? I think I'll just fuck up the trees and my arrows (and get them stuck) if I shoot at trees. What do people target shoot at when they aren't at a range shooting targets (or hunting)? Assuming I'm taking all necessary precautions to ensure nobody is in the line of fire and there's some sort of backstop.

tl;dr how to target shoot inawoods on public lands?

It's definitely a bad idea to shoot at trees unless they are completely rotten.
If you could drive I'd just recommend buying a portable target but if you want to hike to the place you'd be shooting at then you are pretty much stuck with whatever makeshift target you can make out of things you can fit in a backpack.
Personally I use a few thick layers of cardboard taped up in front of whatever bit of raised earth I can find, though I do it with my lighter 25# bow.
I know other people use mats and rugs as arrow catchers so maybe that could work as well if cut up and layered.

I practiced archery a couple years ago at a local club, it was fun at the start and sort of therapeutic too but it got boring fast, to me. Shooting at static targets wasn't much fun after a while.
The last ever arrow I shot was a bullseye 30 metres away (98 ft), which was cool.
