This is a thread for enjoying a pipe while doing outdoor activities. If you ask why this belongs on /out/, you've never spent
an evening by the campfire with a pipe silently enjoying the nature around you, and you're missing out.

>how to get started
Purchase a corn cob pipe (or a cheap briar pipe) and a pouch of Half and Half or Captain Black tobacco from a smoke shop
or online. You will need a lighter or match, and something to tamp it with--a large nail works well if you don't have a pipe tool.
Fill the pipe with tobacco, pack it down halfway, top it off, pack it down to 3/4, top it off again, pack gently and enjoy. Smoke
slower than you think you need to, the tobacco tastes best when it is burning cool. Tamp and re-light as needed. If you still
have trouble, try different methods on YouTube until you find one that works for you.
>smoking a pipe will give you cancer
Originally the Surgeon General found that pipe and cigar smokers, following a careful study of the statistics (at a time when
most adults smoked, so they had a good sample size), had insignificant death rate increases. Nowadays, tobacco is being
legislated against while hard drugs are being legalized. Put two and two together. Tobacco is just another good thing under attack by the government.

>muh weed
Not the time or place. Start your own thread.

All tobacco users welcome.

i'm not the guy that usually makes these threads, but i figured it'd be fine enough to do so since its been a few days since the last one archived, and its the perfect season for smoking while going /out/

I feel like pipe cleaner holders are a total scam, most tobacco pouches I've seen already have a pocket for tools anyway, and thats besides having a case for a pipe too.

are pipes with narrow cups harder to smoke? i bought a cheap Missouri Meerschaum Legend Straight and it's a bit difficult to understand what's going on inside, if i should remove any ash, or how to get the flame in the right place. any other cheap recommendations for beginner retards?

tried Capstan Blue and it tasted like cigarette but more ashy. am i burning it too hot? i had to light it many times so i don't think im puffing too hard

you mean bowls?
narrow bowls are actually easy as long as you have the right sized tamper

the legend isn't narrow though, its a 20mm chamber, which is also very easy to smoke, but needs more attention
by the way it sounds, you need to better pack the tobacco, and then learn how to properly tamp & light from then on
theres a lot of guides out there that better educate on how to, like from muttnchop piper

imho, until you learn how to smoke that pipe without issue, theres basically no reason to get another pipe
>>

My corncob is the only narrow bowled pipe that I have, all my others are wider including my jungle pipes, with one of those being actually very wide. I smoked the corncob after smoking wider bowls for a few years.

My opinion is that the corncobs (i.e. narrower bowls) are easier to pack incorrectly, which would result in it being harder to smoke. It's easy if you don't pack it too tightly, but it is easy to pack it too tightly. Wider bowls are much harder to pack too tightly and thus might seem easier to smoke, but the issue with wider bowls becomes lighting it correctly, and even if you light it correctly you usually smoke the middle of the bowl faster than the perimeter of the bowl, whereas narrower bowls have no such perimeter issue.

>it's a bit difficult to understand what's going on inside, if i should remove any ash, or how to get the flame in the right place
You'll get a feel for it. I don't remove any ash, but I know some people kinda "ash" the pipe a bit when it's getting down there. Just get a czech tool (picker/packer/poker) or even a nail and that should solve your problem, assuming you're packing it correctly. Just don't back it too tightly and it's pretty easy to smoke.

Unless there are tons of estate sales near you, I'd recommend just learning how to smoke the corncob before you get a different pipe. You might not even like smoking one.
https://www.estatesales.net/
I use this website. Estate sales near me are pretty infrequent, and it's even rarer to find estate sales with even a single pipe in it, but occasionally I'll see an estate sale of a pipe smoker with a few pipes in it (and one time, a guy who had owned a pipe shop and had literally ~100 pipes for sale). If you can find an estate sale, you can probably get a no-name pipe for ~$15-20 and that might be worth it just for something that isn't as "rustic" as a corncob, but besides that, just learn to smoke the cob then move to something else.

Oh, as for tamping, I recommend puffing on the pipe while you tamp it. For me, that seems to lessen the chances that you might accidentally snuff out the flame/cherry by tamping. You don't want to tamp too hard, basically just rest the tamp on the ash, but it is possible to accidentally tamp out the flame or to have it go out soon after tamping, but puffing while you do it seems to kinda eliminate that factor. Of course, it also depends on the tobacco. Some tobacco is just really "wet" (and I've smoked one blend that was really "leathery" and difficult to keep lit) and is prone to going out.

what's a decent tobacco that smells good for other people, ideally without topping or minimal topping...

is this true, or is this cope? if true, do you think it's because of tobacco quality or just different smoking style compared to cigarettes?
>>
>>2844852
The ones that smell ok for normies have no taste for you.
>>

>is this true, or is this cope?
No one can ever actually know because all "information" is bought and paid for.

I do think that pipes and cigars are healthier than commercial cigarettes though. Commercial cigarettes smell like death and the smoke from them never fucking leaves, ever. Cigarettes don't even taste like tobacco. I bummed a cigarette from my brother a few years ago, and that shit tasted NOTHING like tobacco. Plus, you inhale cigarettes into your lungs. With pipes and cigars, you just puff it. With cigars, a cigar is just a rolled up wad of tobacco leaves. With pipe tobacco, it's usually a blend of tobaccos, sometimes with some sort of topping if you're smoking an aromatic. With cigarettes, I have no idea what the fuck is in there, but it isn't tobacco, and you're inhaling that into your lungs.

I also think that there is the "contemplative" or "meditative" and "ritualistic" nature of pipe smoking, and sometimes cigar smoking as well. It makes you slow down and just exist. Something that people don't get a lot of in today's world. Cigarettes are like the fast food version of that, there is no calm contemplatives with a cigarette, you'd just getting your fix in and then rushing back.

that's bad

>>2844852
Just smoke something that tastes good and surreptitiously spray a bit of perfume around at the same time if you're that worried about offending delicate sensibilities.
>>
>>2844854
both different smoking style & quality
compared to directly filling your entire respiratory system with smoke, let alone smoke thats filled with an assload of industrial impurities & additives, pipes are just safer

i'd place pipes in the same zone as bbq, deep fryers, and highways
are they "safe"? yes
are they actually safe? no
does it really matter in the modern day, where our rain is filled with PFAS & our ground water with plastic? probably not

I have no idea what has a good room note. I suspect most tobaccos that smell good for others are going to be aromatics, but your not really looking for that.
When i first started i was a fan of sutliff mark twain, i think that has a decent room note and is light on the toppings, but after smoking regularly, i suspect the next time i try it there will barely any taste for me.
Like others said, just smoke what you like
>>
>>2844869
I even tested connoisseur's choice by smoking inside and leaving the room for about 10 minutes. When I returned the room had a pleasant grassy smell. Unfortunately the smoking experience was... air, almost no flavor.

what about latakia, perique and orientals? do those smell good to some normies when compared to straight tobacco?

they smell like burnt rubber, and i don't know anyone who likes that smell

Do Lakeland blends smell the same way they taste? I've only tried Ennerdale once and I think it made me nauseous, but if you could find a Lakeland you like, that might not taste the worst and it might smell good.
