I smoked the corncob after smoking wider bowls for a few years. My opinion is that the corncobs (i.e. narrower bowls) are easier to pack incorrectly, which would result in it being harder to smoke. It's easy if you don't pack it too tightly, but it is easy to pack it too tightly. I don't remove any ash, but I know some people kinda "ash" the pipe a bit when it's getting down there. Just get a czech tool (picker/packer/poker) or even a nail and that should solve your problem, assuming you're packing it correctly. Just don't back it too tightly and it's pretty easy to smoke. Unless there are tons of estate sales near you, I'd recommend just learning how to smoke the corncob before you get a different pipe. You might not even like smoking one. https://www.estatesales.net/I use this website. Estate sales near me are pretty infrequent, and it's even rarer to find estate sales with even a single pipe in it, but occasionally I'll see an estate sale of a pipe smoker with a few pipes in it (and one time, a guy who had owned a pipe shop and had literally ~100 pipes for sale). If you can find an estate sale, you can probably get a no-name pipe for ~$15-20 and that might be worth it just for something that isn't as "rustic" as a corncob, but besides that, just learn to smoke the cob then move to something else.

You don't want to tamp too hard, basically just rest the tamp on the ash, but it is possible to accidentally tamp out the flame or to have it go out soon after tamping, but puffing while you do it seems to kinda eliminate that factor. Of course, it also depends on the tobacco. Some tobacco is just really "wet" (and I've smoked one blend that was really "leathery" and difficult to keep lit) and is prone to going out.

I do think that pipes and cigars are healthier than commercial cigarettes though. Commercial cigarettes smell like death and the smoke from them never fucking leaves, ever. Cigarettes don't even taste like tobacco. I bummed a cigarette from my brother a few years ago, and that shit tasted NOTHING like tobacco. Plus, you inhale cigarettes into your lungs. With pipes and cigars, you just puff it. With cigars, a cigar is just a rolled up wad of tobacco leaves. With pipe tobacco, it's usually a blend of tobaccos, sometimes with some sort of topping if you're smoking an aromatic. With cigarettes, I have no idea what the fuck is in there, but it isn't tobacco, and you're inhaling that into your lungs. I also think that there is the "contemplative" or "meditative" and "ritualistic" nature of pipe smoking, and sometimes cigar smoking as well. It makes you slow down and just exist. Something that people don't get a lot of in today's world. Cigarettes are like the fast food version of that, there is no calm contemplatives with a cigarette, you'd just getting your fix in and then rushing back.

I left one of my favorite pipes outside during a cabin trip a couple months ago and oxidized the hell out of the stem. I also have a couple other pipes that have slightly oxidized stems. I wanna learn how to restore them.

It took me a bit to get my head around the flavor profile with the Katerini, perique, VA and black cav. I think it's one of the few oriental-forward blends I can think of that doesn't have Latakia. Even on the retrohale it's pretty smooth. The Katerini (I assume) has this interesting sour and sometimes bordering musty cheese kind of note that I like. The tin note is odd and I keep nosing it to see if I can figure out what it smells like.As for me personally, I like it but it definitely wouldn't be a regular for me. I'll probably jar it and maybe smoke a bowl or two before Hallowe'en. I'll see if a year of age will change my mind

If you're blowing through it in minutes, you're probably smoking too fast. You will definitely get more smoke out of cigar though. It's simply significantly more tobacco, and with a wider circumference/surface area to draw from. You don't want the bowl getting too hot while you're smoking. For me, usually by the end of it, it is pretty hot, especially cuz I kinda torch it maybe a little more than I should at the end to try to get everything to burn to ash, but while the bowl is actually going it really should only get warm and not hot. If you can't hold the bowl of the pipe comfortable due to the heat, you're smoking too fast.

>>2845537Haunted Bookshop is a nice burley heavy blend with some Perique in it for added mustiness/peppery qualities, and that's pretty much my go-to for when the whether starts getting cooler. Also a fitting name for the Halloween season. The tinned version is notoriously "harsh" for some people, and the flavors are more "spiky" and "bold" and "rough". The bulk version is a slightly mellower, more "rounded" and homogeneous experience. You can also try straight Nicotiana Rustica (Mapacho), which you pretty much have to import as a log of leaves from either Peru or Brazil. It's pretty expensive, and considering that the entire log is like $20 if you're actually in Peru it's kind of excessive, but it's nice and bold as well. The places you can order the leaves from in America just isn't the same (I believe for DIY cigar rolling), but it might be worth a shot to try it. There are also some blends that have cigar leaf in them, but I haven't gotten around to trying any of those yet. Last time I ordered, they were out of Habana Daydream, which is what I've had my eye on as far as cigar leaf blends go. And for a still Virginia blend that is a bit different, I really liked Orion's Arrow. It's nice and spicy. I think I'm just a Perique fiend.

i got one of these "Tattoo" pipes, and i don't really know how i feel about itthey have a clay bowl, a plastic body, and use a 9mm filterit seems alright, but i feel like its just not as good as a standard clay pipe from elsewhere its easier to hold, but it still gets very hot to the touch, and smokes quite hot tooits sorta like if you took the best quality of a clay pipe, removed it, then added the best qualities of a briar/cob pipe to it

I don't like aromatics much to begin with, but I do smoke them occasionally in the summer months, and I just don't like them out of meerschaum. I'd say don't try to force yourself to like it. Unless it's the only blend you have on hand, jar it and come back to it every now and then. As I say I didn't like it at all initially but now most of my favorite blends are strong and heavy in DFK.

It is the single biggest pipe bowl I have ever held, much less smoked or owned. I can almost fit my thumb inside. Has to be around 8" long. It's like somebody rendered a normal pipe at 1.75x size. I cleaned it but a whisper of ghosting now and then from what I'm assuming is that Lakeland floral/talcum powder note. I don't mind Lakelands but it is a bit distracting while smoking a VaPer. This just came in today; C&D From Beyond 2025. Smoking my first bowl as I type this. I like it a lot more than the 2023 edition. The whole concept of From Beyond is that it’s supposed to taste like 90s Nightcap. The thing is, I’m not a big fan of Nightcap due to the smaller amount of orientals. The 2023 edition was quite similar to Nightcap, which is why I didn’t care for it. So far, this year’s tastes more akin to a Balkan like WhiteKnight, just with spice from the Perique. The orientals are really shining in this, and the color of the tobacco is much lighter than 2023 or Nightcap. I believe there’s still some available on the various tobacco websites, and I’d definitely recommend trying a tin.

I "repaired" a cheapo pipe I had before I could afford a decent one by inserting a little piece of tubing (actually cut from a broken telescopic antenna off a hand radio) narrow enough to fit inside to bridge the break. It was a tight friction fit, no glue. Only real downside was it tightened the draw and made cleaning harder.

And then if there's a particular shape he prefers, and whether he prefers acrylic or vulcanite stems. This you can mostly do based on sight, so if you actually see him you wouldn't need to let him know about it and it could be a surprise. If you don't actually see him, it'd be tougher to keep it a secret. As for tobacco, I think I'd prefer to receive tobacco I haven't tried yet. I think most people keep enough or buy enough of their favorites that getting them something they already like isn't really that good of a present. Whereas I always like trying new tobaccos, even if I end up not liking it. You should probably just find out if there are any tobaccos he DOESN'T like. Some people don't like Latakia, some people don't like Lakelands, some people don't like aromatics, etc. I think it's probably more important to figure out what he DOESN'T like than to figure out what he does like. Then once you know what he doesn't like, just scroll tins and pick out something that visually catches your eye (or maybe even bulk, that'd be cheaper and he'd be able to get more, but bulk has a smaller selection usually). He'd probably end up with something he hasn't tried before.

I bought a cob about a year ago and smoke it on rare occasions. over the weekend though I took it out with me the first time on a camping trip. I didn't smoke much at all, but it was nice to do beside a fire. It had been a very long time, so I woke up with a sore throat, but it went away relatively quickly. It is comprised The (high quality) Turkish Meerschaum is light and porous and colors over time, turning a golden amber brown ("patina"). The African Meerschaum is denser and doesn't really color that much. I'm sure if you smoked one pipe your entire life it'd eventually show some signs of coloration, but it doesn't really color much under normal use, and I think sometimes it can be naturally stained a bit, but because it doesn't color much it is often artificially stained a brown color to sort of emulate Turkish Meerschaum. Also, I think Turkey banned the sale of Turkish Meerschaum outside of Turkey or something like that, so if it doesn't come from Turkey, it's probably African. "Missouri Meerschaum" is the company name and they sell primarily corncob pipes.

I stand by the recommendation of the corncob pipe, though personally I do not like Captain Black that much. It's an aromatic, and it's kinda rum-raisin/raisin bran flavor, and it's alright, but personally I think that aromatics taste more like hot air than like tobacco or like the flavor they are trying to go for, and you need to smoke them VERY slow to actually get the flavor to come out. If you think you want flavored tobacco, maybe try the Captain Black. It's not the worst, and it's pretty much the only tobacco that is available everywhere. I did a reconnaissance mission so-to-speak and found that the only tobacco sold by traditional stores anywhere in my area was that Kroger had Captain Black. If you're ordering online, the options expand. I hear good things about Autumn Evening, and it smells wonderful, but I've never tried it because I just don't like aromatics that much. My aromatic of choice is a "MATCH" blend for Cater Hall. Typically Carter Hall is only available in a giant tub. It tastes more like tobacco than flavoring. If you want something that actually tastes like tobacco, I'm a big fan of Haunted Bookshop. It's a mostly burley blend with perique in it. Perique is kinda "peppery", sort of like the hot sauce of tobacco. It's also available in bulk if ordering online, so you can get a bunch of 1oz samplers for like $3 each if you want. Maybe someone can give better recommendations, but those are my go-to blends. Maybe Haunted Bookshop is a little too bold for a newbie, but if you've smoked cigars I think it might be fine.

I like Oriental Silk as well, and it's like a somewhat tangy cinnamon/cardamom (unflavored) tobacco that is pretty mellow ("Silk" is a good descriptor). Crooner is nice too, it's a cube-cut burley that is on the plainer side, but it has Deertongue in it, which is a natural type of grass that the Indians used to flavor their tobacco, and it's got a sort of mint/vanilla/herbal tea flavor to it, just enough that the straight burley doesn't get boring, but that's a bit of a heavier nicotine blend like Haunted Bookshop. I really like "spicy" blends personally, so I'm not the guy to go to for recommendations of something like a more plain Virgina based blend. Hopefully someone else will give some more, and milder, recommendations.
Man I suck at smoking flakes. I dried out some SG Full Virginia flake on a paper towel for over an hour, did the fold and stuff method, and wasted about 10 matches (no exaggeration) just to get it going. Then I had to relight every 15 minutes or so, went through multiple pipe cleaners to get the moisture out, and by the end I was smoking it so hot my mouth still feels like sandpaper a full day later.I've tried rubbing it out before and that works a little better, but it's still noticeably harder to keep lit than my usual Presbyterian. I guess I need to dry it more.

The 236 turned out to be a little monster, that's a massive 2 hour bowl on that thing, but it is a nice stubby dangler and the wood grain is just awesome. The first step is finding the difference between proportions. Then you can get into the difference between manufacturers (STG, C&D, Sutliff(RIP), Gawith, etc.). Tobaccos taste different from manufacturer to manufacturer. For example, Gawith Latakia is very piney, C&D Latakia is earthy, Sutliff Latakia is incense-y. Burley has an even bigger gap. European manufactured burley to be earthy-sweet. American burley tends to be slightly bitter and nutty. Just gotta keep going at it for a few years and try various blends from various manufacturers.

I have a MM Stubby which I like a lot, so I got myself two more Corncobs. A Dagner Poker (lose ferrule, well fitted acrylic stem) and a Raven (tight ferrule, horribly fitted stem). Still make impressive good smokers and most can be fixed with a bit of sandpaper and wood glue.

Hey smokey anons. I am trying to get my dad to quit those god damn cigarettes. We tried using a vape and he was able to deal with that for a while, but that shit was too fiddly and annoying. One day he dropped it, a part broke, and he just didn't want to bother fixing it and got back into cigarettes. I started thinking that maybe instead of a vape, I could get him a basic cob pipe, teach him how to use it, and maybe get him onto something better. He likes to sit in the backyard playing grill master or just relaxing out there for hours but he smokes cigarettes the entire time. It sounds like a pipe would be better for that sort of thing, wouldn't it? Don't they last like an hour or so per bowl? Anyway, I was looking at getting pic related for him from Missouri Meerschaum, but I don't know what tobacco to get with it. I know HOW to use a pipe, but don't smoke myself. I know to get a pipe tool, (the 3 tool thingie) filters, pipe cleaners, etc, but need some specific tobacco recommendations for a hopefully soon to be recovering cigarette smoker, preferably one that I can just order from them to make it easier. The smoke shops in my area just sell vape and weed shit so I am gonna have to pay shipping regardless. I may get the 2 pack of that pipe and try it myself too so if that pipe isn't very good, let me know!

Though they might both be cheaper than smoking a pack a day or whatever. I'm only really familiar with their Cornell & Diehl blends. Of those, Haunted Bookshop, Bayou Morning, and Big n Burley are all good blends that are available in bulk as well. Autumn Evening as well, but I don't really think a cigarette smoker is going to be too keen on a sweet aromatic like that. As far as the pipes go, I might recommend spending a little extra and getting a pipe with an acrylic stem. The default cobs have plastic stems that wear out, especially if he's a clencher. He should probably know whether or not he wants to become a pipe smoker by the time the plastic stem wears out, and at that point he can buy a "forever stem" if he wants to keep using the cob, or he could just buy a new cob cuz they're cheap, but it's worth considering whether or not you think the acrylic stem upgrade up front might be worth it. He might even decide he hates the look of corncob because it doesn't look as good as briar or meerschaum so even if you got the acrylic stem he still might not use it.

I hate clenching pipes. I either bite too soft and it swings around, or I bite so hard that it feels like the stem is going to crack. I've tried those little rubber mouth pieces that fit over the stem and that makes it easier, but then I start drooling like a faucet for some reason. No thanks.
