Gonna take my car, a tent, food, and water to some BLM land in Northern Cali. Plan on camping for two weeks. What am I in for? What should I take? What should I watch out for? Not gonna be where it's snowing, but it will get cold at night (40f). Complete newb here btw. Planning on taking...>water>food>tent>insulating floor mat>blankets>pillow>book>muh dickI plan on finding a suitable spot, parking my car. And putting up my tent next to it.
>>2847033>Complete newb>camping for two weeksCome on, anon...we all know you're retarded but you're going a bit too extreme.
>>2847033two weeks is a lot anon. go for a few days and see how you like it first.good job chosing to car camp and not being totally retarted and chosing to backpack or something crazy like that.other than the length you basically have everything you need. just make sure youre not too far away from your car incase you need to bail for whatever reason.
>>2847033Bring a "footprint" for your tent. Any tarp will do. You can go to Walmart, Home Depot, REI, whatever. Put the tarp down, stake it, put your tent on top of the tarp, stake it. Bring two sleeping pads; one foam one inflatable. The foam cell pad goes beneath your inflatable pad. Remember, the higher the R value, the less cold gets in. When car camping, since weight is no object, I prefer to bring a cloth sleeping bag. A cheap brushed flannel bag from Cabela's, Sportsman's, whatever, rated for 0°. In your case you'd be fine with a 20° bag, but as a personal preference I use 0° bags for everything. You can always cool off with minimal effort. You can't warm up with minimal effort. Bring a blanket to throw over your bag, or if you want to be really fancy bring another sleeping bag and use it as a blanket. Make sure you have enough water, or enough reliable access to clean water. Make sure you have extra batteries. Make sure you have enough propane or butane, or will be close to a town or store where you can just go grab some. And like the other anon said, two weeks is a long time if you're new to it. Maybe go for the weekend and see how you like it. Good luck. Have fun.
>>2847034Bait I'm sure.
>>2847034I'm wondering what could possibly go wrong if I have the basics set up and the weather isn't too extreme.>>2847035That's pretty much why I'm choosing to car camp. To bail out at any dangerous inconvenience. >>2847062This is great info anon. Thanks. This is the stuff I was looking for that even ChatGayPT isn't good at explaining. Will literally look into those things and purchase them today prior to my camping. >>2847099Nope. Just a literal retard who has too much spare time and would rather go out and suffer than stay home one more day.
>>2847104so what your saying is you want us to help you, so you can then drive to a campsite and the moment it gets dark leave.
>>2847112Think of it as sabotaging me and getting me to spend money and put effort into something that I'll quit the same night. You're only hurting me by helping me.
>>2847112>8 GAY RVtypical campsite
>>2847033In northern cali probably prepare for rain so bring maybe a pop up canopy or a tarp just for some shelter if it gets wet and also make sure you have lots of pairs of clothes if they get wet. i went camping in mendocino last christmas and woke up and my tent was sitting in about 4" of water. wife and i got a hotel the next night lol camping when all your gear is wet is pretty miserable.
>>2847104>'m wondering what could possibly go wrong if I have the basics set up and the weather isn't too extreme. Not much really but for two weeks you might get bored.
I've found that one of these map gas canisters with a torch is pretty indispensable for car camping, makes it super easy to start a fire and should easily last you a couple of weeks. plus the cans are cheap anyway
also make sure you have stuff to fix your car if needed. this is what i carry with me.>compressor that runs off car battery>jumper leads>bottle jack>simple tool set>zip ties, duct tape, tie wire>extra oil with tiny funnel>rags>spare tire>tire patch kit
>>2847145this is not a bad list but instead of jumper cables i would suggest a rechargeable jump box that can start your car without another vehicle battery. they are pretty cheap and let you self-rescue
>>2847144Propane is even cheaper with only a slightly lower flame temperature.
>>2847104You gotta do some small trips first to see what gear actually works and what you should bring / do different next time. Do a handful of overnights and a couple 3 days then go for the 2 weeks.
Bring a gun. Not for wildlife but for humans. The type of people who camp in California arent the type of people who camp in the midwest. You have a lot of borderline schizophrenic druggie homeless psychos who live in BLM land even though technically you're supposed to move every 14 days from the spot you're in. I go shoot in BLM land and have seen the exact same trailer and dune buggy there for over a year. No one cares about upholding the law in Cali anymore unless you're a straight white man that can be taxed and fined for revenue.
>>2847820Absolutely do not do this. Bringing a gun to shoot someone in self defense in northern California of all places, is pretty much begging for a life sentence.
>>2847336Hank hill is that you
>>2847033Don't do this. Start with only a night or two.
>>2847311good point anon. i agree.
>>2847311depends on the battery type, you don't want to find the freezing weather has killed your jump starter. Some jump starters have two sets of cables so they can still act as traditional jumper cables if need be.
>>2847821Cali actually has decent self defense laws. They have weird gun laws regarding rifle and handgun configuration, but self defense views and laws are actually decent. And you most DEFINITELY want a gun for people when camping in Cali
>>2850174A bit late to bump with a trolling reply, isn't it?
>>2847033im assuming this is bait for the following reasons>blankets>tent when car is available>winter>2 weeks>first timeplease take notes
>>2850185Coastal northern california really isn't that cold in winter.
>>2850178Never too late for that
>>2850185Is 50 degrees that cold
>>2850185NTA but I don't sleep in my car unless it's an absolute last resort. If I can sleep in my tent, I will.
>>2850185>sleeping in a tent is trollingManlet alert
Decide on 2 nights with the potential for 4 in terms of packing. Put everything that "you need" in your backpack and walk around your town with it on, are you comfortable? Now you can decide if you want to add more weight or perhaps take some things out. Put your tent up and take it down, repack it, so that you know the process when you get there, sometimes things take longer and it's getting dark which is fine when you're prepared.Take a warmer sleeping bag than is necessary, you can always unzip it a tad but you can only zip up a thin one so far. These days $100 will get you a sub-zero bag that packs down small and weighs 3lbs (onetigris) on amazon. I went out with a stove tent and just blankets once because huh the stove will keep me warm all night, but of course it went out after 2 hours leaving me shivering hahaha. Invest in a solid -5 sleeping bag if it's going to get anywhere near cold.Take some paper and cardboard, enough to get 2 fires going, so that there's no worries about wet wood. I carry a small bottle of methylated spirits (for a spirit burner) so that even half-soaked wood will spark up well enough if necessary. On my first trip I forgot to buy firelighters and the trees were soaked, now I carry several methods of creating effective fire.If you plan to go more times and next year: buy a titanium stove if you can find one at a good price. I have no tariffs so I can buy from chinese ebay, but regardless they back down to less than 3.5 POUNDS with the chimney. Such a great thing to have with you believe me.
