What's it like permanently living on a sail boat and sailing around the world? It seems to be the only way you can truly be free in the modern world. I'm not naive, there is obviously risks, but if you aren't an idiot and get sufficient experience beforehand are you most likely to be fine? Any other interesting/useful information is also appreciated.

Why do you think this allows you to be free?

he's one of those retarded techbros who think being in the sea means you can avoid taxes
>he doesn't know

Never a moment's respite from the anxiety of defying death. Even when you sleep, you'd imagine hearing water leaks, cracks, mysterious sounds that might leave you waking up with 18" of water in the bilge.
Fuck that, in other words.

The ocean will humble you quickly. Unless you have a network of people and funds to help you along, you wont last too long no matter your strength and skill.

Think of it like being homeless and living in a tent when the weather is windy and rainy 24/7 and you're struggling to get a wink of sleep because you have to constantly worry about your tent ripping or leaking water
Except with the hobo tent at worst you're gonna get cold when that happens, on a boat you WILL die

you give him too much credit; it's another maladaptive daydream thread about running away from home that's built almost entirely off videogame "experience".

Boats are terrifying and the ocean is leagues worse.
You can fuck up and sink on a clear calm day. Or you can be the saltiest sea rat this side of Cap'n Ahab and be struck down by a passing storm's skyscraper sized waves.
What you want, OP, is living on a big lake. And that's something possible to do. Sailing around the world by your lonesome for many years, on the other hand, is death.

or you could sail into a rogue hole

that's a fun one
>>

Had it happen to me. After it was this weird shelf like thing though if that makes sense. So it was the hole and then the water behind it was a good 5 feet higher than where I was to begin with. Rogue waves are pretty shitty too and can knock you off the deck if you’re not prepared for them. If you’re solo or no one sees you go over you’re screwed.

Another issue is half sunk shipping containers that have fallen off of cargo ships. They’re hard to see and ramming into the corners of one is pretty easy. I know people who have hit them at night. They’ll pierce your hull and you’re done.

All in all it’s not terrible to be out to sea but you’ll constantly worry like other anons have said.

Another shitty part is that when you come into port tying up is expensive most places and all your supplies are marked up more than usual . You used to be able to just hang out on an unused mooring ball but now the state and whoever else owns them go around and look for people doing this.

You think they just let you make port anywhere, no questions asked or fees taken or licenses checked?

KWAB.

I'm not going to defend OP - sorry bro, living on a boat is not freedom. Haul-outs, rigging replacements and mooring fees tie you civilisation just as surely as rent and property taxes - but the ocean is not some supernatural entity that hungers for your death. You sound like the sort of faggots whose experience of the outdoors comes exclusively from watching influencers on youtube playing up the danger of their weekend hike for extra clicks.
>never a moment's respite from the anxiety of defying death
Imagine living with this degree of neuroticism.

living on a boat means sitting mostly ashore, either paying for mooring with amenities or just anchored a distance away and coming to refill water, food and fuel.

sailing around the world means doing tons of preparation, planning, having lots of skills, knowledge and doing a lot of work just to safely finish the journey across, not living in it. 10x more so if you're doing it single handed, still pretty hard with untrained people but no actual crew. doing this without a boat that's built with such journeys in mind is also a great risk.

maintenance is costly and takes time and the only way to reduce it is to sit ashore more, any travel means things wear out and break and have to be fixed or replaced.

if you like to take long, hot showers, have a good 8-12 hour sleep or wouldn't want to do laundry manually then boat life isn't for you.

>what is a bilge alarm
>what is having a structurally sound boat

many of the risks of sailing are mitigated by now being a retard and having modern technology

its more free than vanlife since its very difficult to enforce laws on people on boats just due to the nature of water, theres actual infrastructure for people living semi-nomadically but it comes at a huge cost. if you are good at repairing shit and wrenching its not the worst way to live. but its not a cheat code to escape wagiedom
