Ive been looking at fly fishing gear and it seems fairly pricy. Are there any combos or setups you can get for 100-150 that will be good to learn on?There were okuma and pflueger setups around that price and then various eagle claw and no name setups for much lessWill i hate myself trying to learn on a budget rod/reel?
>>2850870>and it seems fairly pricy.fly fishing to fishing kinda became like golf to ball sports, but you can get away for cheap>Are there any combos or setups you can get for 100-150 that will be good to learn on?>There were okuma and pflueger setups around that price and then various eagle claw and no name setups for much lesspeople usually recommend the echo lift combo, but if i remember well it's a bit above your budget, eagle claw is gooddunno for the others but okuma spinning reels improved a lot in the last years so maybe the rest did >Will i hate myself trying to learn on a budget rod/reel?not at allgetting old gear off ebay work too, that's what i did and backing/line/leader ended up costing more that the rod and reels
>>2850870I bought this for my brother in law last Christmashttps://a.co/d/b8htW0BI'm legit impressed with it! I have an echo lift, and It's a great rod/reel/line combo. But for half the price, this kit is catching my brother in law just as many fish as my echo. The fly's are ok, but I tie, so my brother in law has never used any of them. The leaders work just as well as the rio leader's I'm using. Get yourself a spool or two of tippet and a few more flies and you'll be good to go. I mean, you could go fishing with just the kit, nothing extra needed. But I'd get the tippet, so you're not burning through the leaders and more flies, because you always need more flies ;)
>>2850870Echo lift kit is a bit iver budget but its really goodEagle claw is okay, i learned on one of those. You're going to hate yourself learning on any setup but youll hate yourself less when your combo is good enough to keep up with your progression.>>2850876+1 for more flies, you always need more flies and more fly boxes>>2850763>first couple monthsFirst couple trips*
>>2850874>>2850876>>2850919Appreciate the adviceI'm assuming a 5wt would be a safe general choice but what about action? I already have some nymph and streamers that i cast on spinning gear. I want something that will be as versatile as possibleMy budget isn't really set in stone. If the echo is a good starter then i can definitely go for that. I just want to be able to comfortable use as many types of presentations as possible.
>>2850933I usually advise a 6, especially since you're prioritizing as many types of presentation as possible. A 6 can still make a delicate presentation with a small dry fly, and surprisingly small fish will still give you plenty of bend, but the extra mass in the line will help a lot with heavier nymph rigs and especiallg streamers. As for action, youre basically stuck with moderate fast at your price point, but imo thats the most universal action anyways
>>2850933I second Skid's 6wt rec. My 4wt is great for dry flies, but really struggles casting even moderately heavy nymphs like #6 pat's rubber legs. My 6wt on the other hand can cast a #16 griffith's gnat, no problem and handles heavy nymphs well too. If it's within your budget, I know this is adding up(fly fishing always does...lol), but I definitely prefer my Echo traverse over my lift, but you're looking at $250 vs ~$190 for that. Lift has a medium action, traverse medium fast.
>>2850933depend on the fish you want to target and the flies you want to throw at italso some type of flies will be heavier or have more wind resistance, so you want more strength than usually prescribed for the sizeunless you're planning on fishing small stuff on small flies you shouldn't hesitate going for the 8wtbut if you find something cheap second hand between 5 and 8wt it should cover most basic needs regardless
>>2850876>>2850919More flies, more flies!!!!Its amazing how finicky fish can be and how switching from one fly to an ever so slightly different fly WHOSE DIFFERENCES CAN ONLY BE DISCERNED UNDER A DAMN MICROSCOPE can be the difference between going home empty or hitting bag limit.
>>2850941How are you struggling to throw a Pat's Rubber Legs on a 4 WT? If that's a problem for you, you must really struggle with a beadhead woolly bugger.Echo Lift Kits have gone up to $250. Echo had a price change a few months ago. I don't know what Traverse Kits cost, but they've surely gone up as well.
>>2850961Fishusa had the lift kit for 190 in 4 and 6I was probably going to go for that.
>>2850961I was fairly new to fly fishing the last time I tried. It might be easier now that I can cast better. But it felt like the 4w lift didn't have enough backbone. The tip was too....springy? But like a weak spring, not a strong spring. It was a #6 bead head pat's with a nickel bead 7 turns of .25 lead wire. I never tried it again on that rod. But I have thrown it on my 6w traverse and it acts as it's supposed to. I'll try it again on the lift sometime. But I've pretty much otherwise relegated it to dry flies and #14 or smaller nymphs. And it does a great job at throwing those.
do any of you chum?
>>2850406Little red i got this weekend. Free lining live skrimps on the flats in central FL.
>>2850964Awesome! Pull the trigger now!! They will not be selling them at that price for long. My store kept the kits at $190 until we sold out. An Echo Lift Kit can be the only rod you ever own. It's probably the best thing to have ever cone to fly fishing. I'm the kind of person who likes to buy once, cry once. When I get something that's better than what I had, I ignore the old thing. That's not the case with my Echo Lift Kit. I have a Sage R8 Core ($1100), and I still break out my Lift. Get some 9 ft leaders; these are the only leaders I fish as a spring creek fisherman, and get some tippet. I like to fish light (5x and 4x). Others don't.
>>2850997>>2850964Yeah buy that shit immediately its not going to be that low again in a long time if ever
>makes Americans shit and piss their pants with anger
Think this is good to start or should i get more leaders or thicker ones?I added a 4x tippet to cart too
>>2851042you can have all the trash fish you want
>>2851048Ditch the 6x and get 3x instead. Unless you're fishing #28 midges you really dont need anything uhder 5x for anything. Also cjnsider getting some 1x or 2x leaders and tippet for streamer fishing. I always try to use the heaviest line i can get away with.
>>2851042what's the deal with brits and carp btw?
>>2851048I'm the guy who told you to buy now and talked about lighter setups. You don't want 6X, especially as a beginner. What I would do is buy an extra leader for 5X and 4X, since I fish them the most. You might get tangled in a tree and lose most of your leader. I'm imagining you can't just go to the fly shop and get a new one. The other thing I highly recommend are the smallest tippet rings you are capable of using. They stop your leader from shortening and make adding tippet easier. If it is true you have no fly shops near you, I would suggest buying some flies. I advise against RIO (don't worry about leader and tippet) and Solitude, based on personal experience, but there are other shitty fly brands I have heard of. Umpqua and MFC are the best. Get some nymphs and streamers. Skip the dry flies and floatant, but if you are really keen on surface action thus time of year, get a couple tiny foam beetles. Also, get some of the smallest airlock indicators. I hate them, but many people like them, and they can be good for beginners.
>>2851092Their overlords didn’t allow the common person to fish for pike or salmoinoids, so British freshwater fishermen had a choice between carp, roach, brim, dace, and bitterling.Carp are by far the best fish to catch on that list.
>>2851094>Their overlords didn’t allow the common person to fish for pike or salmoinoidshold on, there's probably regulations on that, i have regulations on that, but it can't be illegal up thereanyway they don't have the culinary capacity to make anything good out of carp
>>2851097Certain types of catch weren’t illegal, they were just taxed in kind. And the English absolutely knew how to make food from carp, you boil it up, flake the meat off the bones, mix with flour and then fry up a fish cake.
>>2851100>they were just taxed in kindpretty sure this isn't a thing in this day and age, some laws are considered obsolete over there and not applied anymore, like laws related to horse carts in cities because barely anyone use these anymoreand you lost me at boiling, stop boiling everything you limey swine
>>2851048I'm with the other two, skip the 6x. Get 4x and 5x. I use 4x most of the time and only go down to 5x if I'm using #18 or 20. And if you think you'll be throwing streamers, get a Rio big nasty and some 1x or 2x tippet. Tippet rings are also great for preserving your leaders. Just add one at the end of the second taper and tie on your tippet from there. That's for nymphs and swung fly leaders, skip the tippet ring for dry fly leaders.
>>2851042Anger? No. Confusion as to why you would want to intentionally target trash fish, yes. But if you want to fish for carp, hey, have fun. If you plan on eating it, here's a recipe I heard that works well for them. Clean carp and split it in two, no need to fillet or depone. Place the carp on cardboard and set it on the grill, set to low. Cook for 30-40 minutes until internal temp of at least 170F. Then toss the carp in the trash and eat the cardboard.
spools ran out, my leaders will be only butt and tippet now, too small butt and too big tippet tooi'll manage just fine tho
>>2851139a recipe just as good as british cookingjokes aside, it's a fish that is heavy and fight back i get why people fish them for sport
>>2851102Obsolete old rules don’t restrict modern behavior, but they do inform the traditions that the modern practices descend from. Also poached or baked with a bit of salt, pepper, and (optionally) lemon zest is the best way to enjoy a fish. If you eat your fish batter fried, you like the taste of batter and sneed oil, not the taste of fish.
>>2851093>foam beetlesFoam bugs in general, they make good bobbers.>>2851093>airlock indicatorsNothing wrong with those but if you want easy mode look at the oros 2 piece fly bobbers. I thought they were a meme but they actually cast way nicer. I still use thingamabobbers tol though.>>2851141Your tippet is heavier than your butt? Regardless, it'll hinge, but it should be servicable.
>>2851150I already have and use the oros on spinning gear. They are pretty nice>>2851136>>2851093Thanks for the advice all. I updated the cart before buying anything.
>>2851154just keep in mind fly fishing is full of pretentious people that will give you shit advice and go on about presentation and finesse so take everything with a grain of salt and don't be afraid to try things in different situations, different knots, tippet rings and all
I am a nolife having fag that plays vidya all the time but am wanting to try new hobbies. What is the appeal of fishing? I don't know if I get why so many people like to do it.
>>2851182It's like gambling but actually fun. You can't make the fish bite, but you can sure try. Fishing can be very technical or stupid simple. It can be very active or very relaxed. It's whatever you want it to be.
>>2851182Catching fish triggers ancient genetic programming. You get a nice flood of adrenalin and dopamine. A hormonal reward for catching a potential meal.
>>2851182You trick an animal into eating a plastic lure so you can get an heavy metal intoxication eating it
>>2851182Self paced and good excuse to go outside, good if you can trick a buddy into it
>>2851139Only eastern euros eat carp, everyone else fish them for fun
>>2851182depends on how you view it. for me it's like pokemon, trying to catch as many different types as I can and big specimens of each. it's also about exploring new places. aside from that, it's learning a useful survival skill, and most importantly, it's an outdoor hobby that gets you fresh air, sun, and away from vidya addiction. you can do it alone or with friends. add a kayak to the mix and you can explore even further, and get light exercise. half the time I go out in my kayak with a rod I don't even end up fishing, but just exploring.
>>2851182Gives me a excuse to sit by the crick and have a few beers

What are your favorite flies made by Umpqua or some other company? Obviously, I'm not asking about a GB Hare's Ear but something unique that you like to buy or tie on your own. My favorites are a Pops Bugger and Mayers Mini Leech Jig. It's much, much cheaper to tie your own. Never buy them.
Absolutely cracking bass the other day.
>>2851489 Although really its getting into cod and whiting season this time of year - off the lures and back onto the bait fishing for me.
i cut my finger today doing knots on braid
>>2851182It's the anticipation of getting a bite, followed by the surprise of having a fish on at the end of your line; feeling it shake, swim, and fight.
>>2851182>go outside>drink beer>sometimes go home with fishAny further questions?
>>2851492That has never ever happened to me. I knot various poundages of braid every day at work, and it flies a million miles and hour through my fingers under pressure. How did you manage to do that? Picking up a fish by holding braid, that makes sense why you'd get cut, but tying knots? In other news, we're getting a big snow storm. It's surely going to melt, but I've got a strong feeling this will be the best ice season in a decade. I hate ice fishing, but I'll go if I have an opportunity.
Anyone ever try sinking a griffith gnat to see if anything takes it?
>>2851538Drowning dry flies intentionally is a thing. Im pretty sure ive fished for bluegill with a fairly large (#16) drowned griffiths gnat with success.
>>2851583Interesting, I feel like experimenting now. Thanks for the info.
Almost 3 hours of trying to catch a zander on dropshot at night on medium action rod. First serious try, tried different lures, varied reeling. Nothing.
This is my first year doing any colder weather fishing and it has been greatGot this big guy today. 18-20 inch easy. He was tagged but i didnt get the number. Spit the lure in the net so i tipped him out
>try braid>caught a weed>slight rod wiggle>invent new knot>inb4 skills issue
>>2851799i've seen knots in a line, but knot in a line around the rod that's new for mealso i assume this is a fluorocarbon leader, look smaller than the braid, what diameter/weight are these and what are you fishing for?
>>2851799I have to try this one on my rod without a bait holder
>>2851799the main downside to braid that people don't tell you is that knots are much easier to get and close to impossible to get out once they cinch down. wind knots are very easy to get if you just whip it out hard with lots of arc/slack. jerking snags can also cause them if they wrap around underwater sticks and such. you have to be mindful of these things, but braid is ridiculously sensitive.
I'm hoping to get some advice. I really like my 4 piece Presso UL rod. I am strongly considering getting a Presso Air, but I'm not sure what action I want. Unfortunately, having a chance to try it out in-person is not possible. I am looking for something with a similar power and action. I mostly fish 1/32 oz jigs, sometimes 1/16 oz, and size 0-4 Panther Martins for bluegill, bass, and trout.
>>2851878longer rods by nature will be more whippy and slow to react, shorter will be more crisp. at the same time, the ultralight will feel more whippy and slow to react than the light when using techniques that rely on bite detection. thus I'd personally go with a shorter ultralight(under 6ft6) or longer light(over 6ft6) in your situation. the longer light action models will probably have similar tip section softness to the ultralight as a whole. it will just take more to bend down near the first couple of guides. that's usually how the lighter power rods work for the most part. now if you like a long whippy rod, then by all means get a 7ft or longer ultralight. I like them but lots of people don't.

Wanna get a bass boat this summer. I have fished me whole life but have never owned a boat. Any advice on what I should look for? Just want something I can use on small lakes and rivers with room to stand for my brother and I. Any advice on what I should look for/be wary of? I just plan on buying one off of marketplace
>>2851979>not just doing one with sticks and leather
what cause a line to look like picrel? not a washer problem obviously since it isn't more on a side than the other, it's braid if that change anything and it was properly spooled
>>2852003I assume you mean on a spool.Whatever is guiding the line as it winds on the reel is dwelling longer or otherwise slowing down at the ends of its travel so it's depositing more line at the ends than in the middle
>>2852006any idea if it can be fixed?

>Didn't get to fish nearly as much as I wanted before it got cold this year.>Decide this is finally gonna be the year I'm gonna get into ice fishing. So I already have a nice heater I use with my normal tent. But do any of the brands of ice fishing tent really stand out compared to others? I've seen four person tents going from 80 to 500 bucks.
>>2851979Jon boat. You want one.
>>2852021it may even itself out as you cast, i had the same with an slx at the start of the year and its mostly fine now
This was my first summer fishing. I was using a $20 5'6 Wormgear rod/reel combo. I was just gifted an UglyStik GX2 6'6 Medium. I'm wanting to pair that with a Daiwa Fuego 2500 lt. Is that a decent enough reel? Sounds good enough for price and comparison to others in that price bracket. I've heard that the GX2 isn't very sensitive (probably still an upgrade to what ive been using though) so want to a braided mainline with a fluoro leader. I've read 10lb braid with 8lb fluoro is a good combination and could give me extra sensitivity.I've mainly been fishing for whatever I can catch (usually panfish, a couple of small bass). But I would love to catch trout, bigger bass and catfish too. I guess I'm looking for an all around setup.Any other advice on if this line setup would work well for my rod/reel and what type/brand of braid and fluoro to get?I heard berkley forward braid is great but I have no idea on fluoro leaders. Any tips?
>>2852049fuego is basically just a magsealed legalis/exceler. read up on mag seal and decide if you want that or not. In my opinion, the outgoing Shimano Nasci FC is a better buy at that price point. regardless, do NOT pay msrp for any reel at this time of year, they are always going on sale by quite a bit. you have to physically check websites daily, because the price doesn't always show up on google due to it often being promo codes. 10 or 15lb braid is fune. 15 if you want to use a thicker leader, 10 for thinner leader. I also suggest 8 strand braid vs 4x. j-braid, j-braid grand, sufix 832, etc. braid cost more but it lasts longer. for leader you could even try yo-zuri hybrid if you want lots of line for cheap. it's got less stretch than most flouro so you will get sensitivity, great knot strength, and abrasion resistance. the only downside is the thick diameter. lots of flouro is junk, and the fact that it's expensive means you gotta spend a lot to find one that isn't junk. some has shit breaking strength, some has shit knot strength, some has too much stretch to be sensitive, some is just too stiff, etc. flouro is an entire rabbit hole, and an expensive one. once again, do NOT buy anything at msrp this time of year, too many sales to be doing that.
>>2852049>I've read 10lb braid with 8lb fluoroThats pretty light, id go 20lb braid to 10-17lb leader for a medium rod, and id run a power pro mainline to a berkley leader.
>>2852053>read up on mag seal and decide if you want that or not.I think its probably worth it. It's a nice reel and will last long. I travel to NYC quite a bit, so would be nice to try fishing the sea with out too much worry about salt water getting in. I've also dropped my rod in the river before, so good peace of mind.>do NOT pay msrp for any reel at this time of yearGood advice. I have a $20 coupon for Dicks so will wait until i see a sale there, unless I see one better elsewhere. >braid cost more but it lasts longer.I really don't mind shelling out for good braid. I previously used mono and only ever respooled because I kept getting snagged and ended up losing too much reel. I'm guessing in those scenarios the break point would be on the leader. >>2852070I'm up in NEPA. Most of what I've caught are small bass and panfish. I'd like to target bigger, but don't think I'll have monsters. I'd like to hit bigger bass, trout, maybe a catfish. Apart from strength are there any benefits of heavier braid?Right now I'm thinking of getting 10/12lb Berkley Forward Braid and 8lb Seaguar Red Label Fuorocarbon.I read that 10lb/8lb would give me increased sensitivity which I think I'd like for finess fishing since the GX2 isn't super sensitive.
>>2852091Heavier braids have a few benefits like increased relative lifespan and abrasion resistance- whhen 10lb braid ages and degrades 25% you have 7.5lb, when 20lb braid does it you still have 14lb of pull on tap. Its also more manageable, under 15lb it seems to more readily tangle and dig in to spools amd be harder to untangle. You also lose less gear with heavier line because you can pull harder before you lose your lure. I fish 20lb braid and 20lb mono wigh ned rigs for 10 inch bass because if i snag the hook will bend out before the line breaks and i can get the lure back.
>>2851979I recommend a V hull if you’re not planing on skimming mud or thick veg stuff, they’re better and safer if you’re ever out in the weather. But for me, the river is the Mississippi and the sloughs freeze hard and don’t have fish worth catching in them. If you are further south where the main killer of fish in shallow water are predators and not the weather, you might want a long tail and a flat bottom, they can go places conventional boats and motors cannot. If you don’t feel the need for a long tail, get a used 14 foot rowboat and a 15-20 hp motor, a conventional short shaft if you’re a confident navigator or a pump-drive if you’re afraid for your lower unit or planning on driving over sandbars or mud flats. Spend more money on your electronics than your outboard and more on your outboard than your hull and trailer. My current boat is an 18 foot Crestliner with a 40hp Mercury. It was originally a bench boat, but I decked over the benches and got some seats. It fishes 4 comfortably and can haul enough weight that I can bring 60 gallons of fuel, camping gear and food for a week, and 3 friends to Voyagers and it’ll still comfortably cruise at 20mph with 1400 lbs of man and gear when we make the 30 mile run to our preferred campsite. I’m bought into the Humminbird and Minnkota electronics ecosystem, and setting my boat up with autopilot, multiple screens, and good charts and sonar was easy, but I think some other brands might be cheaper, but IDK if they are as simple to set up.
>>2852118What part of the Mississippi do you fish? I'm mostly a NE Iowa trout angler, but the big river is closer than many of the streams I fish. It's just that I don't have a boat. Anyway, I might get a boat in the future or a better way to transport my kayak, and it sounds like you have some knowledge that might help me.

>>2852234The other day I was gifted one of those mystery tackle box things, has some baits for jig heads I think. How do I know what size jig heads to get? Do I base it on what I want to catch? My gear?
>>2852241Jig sizing is a tricky question dominated by feel and personal preference. What were the soft plastics? You need to consider how big the lure is, how deep you're going to fish/how hard you want the bait to sink, and how big the actual hook in the jig is. You might want a 1/4oz head with a 3/0 hook to lightly weight a paddle tail so it swims a foot of three under the surface or you might want a 1/2 oz jig with a smaller hook if you're trying to drag bottom with a curly tail in 25 feet of moving water.
>>2852241You can catch monster fish using tiny stuff. A 1/32 lead jig head with a 2 inch twister tail is the size of a small minnow. Everything eats minnows. You don't want a 1.25 inch bait on a 1/4 oz jig hook. It will be completely dwarfed. You can go to your local store and match it up yourself or ask for help. You could ask for help there too. If you are against that option, you can always post what it was you got.Hey /out/it's, we missed Secret Santa last year. How about doing one this year?
>>2852243>You can catch monster fish using tiny stuff.Thats specifically why i built my hyper finesse, it will launch a 1/16th oz jig head and 2 inch curly tail far as fuck, even more so with a bobber, but then its still got the power to take on 6lb fish with ease. The only problem it has is that its fiberglass so its not that sensitive, but it does great with small movjng baits or lures under bobbers
I don't think I've ever caught a fish on any plastic other than one of theseTried senkos, trout magnets, and twirl tails with no luck
>>2852256How long have you been fishing? I've only started this summer, I tried spinners, cranks, swimbaits, senkos. For most of the summer I didn't catch anything and always went back to a float and nightcrawlers which got me some panfish. Towards the end I managed to catch a few small bass on a spinner, not sure what changed. Maybe my technique, maybe the water temperature. It's a mystery. Looking forward to the spring so I can get back out there and try again.
>>2852259I got back into fishing like 5 years agoI catch everything on spinners and rapalas mostly. Only use bait for ocean fishingI posted some trout catches lately and they were all on thomas spinners/swiss swings
>>2852256>>2852259seconding this guy>>2852260almost every freshwater predator bite onto spinners and soft plastic on a jigheadi use mepps and rapala curltails
>>2852154Everything from Lake Winnibigoshish to Lake Pepin. Though lots of the natural course of the river, especially above the Coon Rapids Dam, can be marginal for power boating depending on river level, so I end up fishing from canoe as often as the boat if I’m launching from Monticello or any of the other launches that aren’t for dam impoundments. But yeah, if you wanna talk about boats, I’m always down.
Anyone fish in NEPA? When fishing a new lake, how do you know what to use on your setup? How do you know what fish are in their? I want to catch some catfish in the spring and summer, but how can I know what body of water will have any? And one at that body how will I know where in the water they are as a poor bank fisher?
>>2852374>>2852374Not sure what NEPA is but assuming its a developed area with a department of natural resources the lake is probably documented along eith common species in that body of water. You could also talk to the local fishing shop, ask what fish are in what lakes. As for finding fish, thats trial and error. You figure out what kind of habitat your desired species likes- does it like weeds? Fallen trees? Rocks? Then find fishing spots with those features and fish them. You can probably find depth charts for lakes too i look at a lot of my local bodies of water with gpsnauticalcharts
>>2852378I believe NEPA is North East PennsylvaniA. >>2852374Lake Wallenpaupack seems to be the best place for channel catfish in your area. What I did was go to your DNR (not called DNR) website. I scrolled down to Where to Fish. I then selected Best Fishing Waters by Species. You could also go to Warmwater/Cooleater Fishing to find it. Lackawanna Lake seems to be the only other Waterbury that has channels.
Wow. This thread is dead. Fair weather fishermen, yet they complain about Skid's threads. Hopefully soon, I'm going to get some friends to take me out ice fishing. I don't own any gear, but I know they do. I think it might be fun to go after some crappie and walleye and do a catch and cook.
>>2852617It sucks because there's no light to fish after workI'm still out on the weekend. Hopefully get another nice trout today.
>>2852617Lakes are not quite safe to walk on. Fella needed rescuing with an airboat here the other day, because the ice he was fishing on broke free and drifted out into open water.
Fish from the other day, somebody got my ip range banned so now I can't shitpost fish while I'm /out/.

>>2852665you can fish in winter you know
>>2850406
Micro line guides are awful in the winter1-4 casts before they all freeze up
>>2852770I learned that the hard way too
>>2852754Fishing is noticeably worse in every way in winter and it feels worse being out in cold weather so I fish half as much.
>>2852770>>2852803TENKARA is the way. I am not a paid shill, but I highly recommend the Dragontail Mizuchi. It's great for trout and bluegill. I'm about to buy my second Dragontail rod.
>>2852808I have a rod that i got from ebay. Havent had much luck and have a lot of difficulty casting it well. It would be smart to try it out with something decent instead of an old random pole
>>2852806As somebody who primarily trout and salmon fished for 20 years, haha.
>>2852834Yeah. I am not a fan of Dragontail's cheapest rod, but the Mizuchi is great. Watch some videos to get started or ask questions here.
Followed the advice of some shillbros here and just got my lift kitAny advice for winter fly fishing trout?
>>2852884i'm no trout expert but some fishes go deeper in winter so i guess trout does too, also there's less surface insects and more nymphs or tadpoles in general so make sense to me to target with nymph instead of dry fliesthere's also a setup where you tie a nymph to your dry fly so you can target both surface and underwater, in that setup the dry fly also work as a float of sorts, but i guess as a beginner you might want to keep things simplealso that might depend on the weather or if it's river or lake, like in general fish would go deeper where water is less cold than surface but at the same time it's common to see fish going into shallow waters when it's sunny to get a bit of warmthbut again i'm no trout expert
>>2852884I'm one of the guys who spilled the lift kit. Here's what I recommend. Practice in the yard or at an unfrozen pond with the leader that comes on there. When you're ready to fish for real, throw it out. Hopefully, you have some quality leaders and tippet or can buy them easily. I like fine tippet, but others do not. That means 5X and 4X most of the time. In the winter, go slow with your presentation. Do not rip streams through the water. Also, don't fish dry flies other than the odd BWO. Dead drifting nymphs is a good idea. You can fish them under an indicator, but I hate indicators, so I don't use them. Try various patterns, sizes, and colors. Trout will be a little more lethargic in winter but not much more. They will not wallow in deep pools like catfish.
>>2852901Shilled got autocorrected to spilled.
>>2852901I took asvice from everyone that posted and got 4x and 5x tippet and about 8 leaders in 3 different weights. It was all rio beand so hopefully at least decebt. Is the fly line on the lift decent or will that be something ID 2 eventually want to upgrade? I see it goes from 10 dollars to 100
>>2852929The stock fly line is great. Do not upgrade. Fish it till it needs replacing.
>>2852884>>2852929Leave the line it came with, and like the other anon said, go practice casting. When i got in to fly fishihg i dodnt even bother taking my rod to a lake or river until i could cast competently, shoot line, and double haul.
>>2852938A newbie does not need to know how to double or even single haul. That's far more advanced than he needs to know to catch fish. He just needs to be able to cast across a room (do not practice inside). Other important things are casting relatively accurately and not hanging up on trees behind you. Watch some casting videos, pay attention to what you're doing, and you'll be fine.
how important is line weight? Like if I'm using 10lb braid and 8lb fluro would I be ok with a 12lb catfish? I only fish in lakes and rivers from the bank so although I'd love to catch bigger i doubt it would happen. Maybe with a catfish though.
>>2852942My friend caught a muskie, not a baby but far from a giant, on 2 lb line. A heavier line allows you to muscle the fish more. That's it. It doesn't bar you from catching big fish.
>>2852942fishes don't exactly pull their weight on a line, let's say you weight about 80kg, you can't apply 80kg of pulling force on a rope, it's similar for the fish, unless you pull it fully out of the water by the line alone it's not gonna apply it's weight on the linenow there's factors, like the fish fighting or water current puling the fish away that will increase the applied force also take in account that most knots don't have 100% of your line strengththe knot between your 8lb fluoro and 10lb braid might break on a 12lb catfishdon't be scarred to oversize a bit, unless you're also fishing panfish and such with that setup i'd go straight up for 20lb for both
>>2852951I'm definitely also fishing for panfish. Not on purpose, its just 95% of what I happen to catch.
>>2852887In ice fishing, anyways, trout run shallow in winter. But as ever, where the forage is will be the greatest factor.
>>2852950Light line increases stress on fish because it forces you to wear them out more completely before you land them.>>2852951Pan fish don’t give a single fuck about line, except maybe crappies.
>>2852953i'd go for 16lb on both then, should be enough for all your use cases without being too thick
>>2852940Hauling isnt complicated and makes casting way easier>>2852942Youll be fine>>2852955>maybe crappiesNo they don't care either ive used 20lb mono on a 1/16oz jig and slammed em>>2852953>>2852957Id probably do 20lb braid and 14-17lb leader
>>2852960>>2852957>>2852953i retract my statement, 20lb braid with a slightly smaller leader is sound, now i wouldn't go bellow 16lb fluoro, taking in account the lost strength from the knot, 20braid 16fluo is good
>>2852932>>2852938good to know it is decenti practiced a little earlier in the year and watched some videos. i'm just going to take it with me fishing tomorrow along with spinning rods and fuck around a bit. there are some clear stretches of river with gravel shores and no trees close by so no worries about catching a branch
for the dude saying fishing in the winter sucks: you're missing out!>>2852942this was caught on 20lb braid with a 30lb leader. you can reel in much bigger fish as long as you aren't trying to bulldog it as it pulls away.
>>2852984nice redfish>for the dude saying fishing in the winter sucks: you're missing out!while i agree with you, let's be fair and consider we don't have the same winder
>>2852990>let's be fairno i don't think i will. ill just continue to catch fish.
>>2852980Something that i thjnk accellerated my progess fly fishing was doubling down on it and leaving spin gear at home, insisting upon figuring out how to do "it" with a fly rod. Dont neglect roll casting, once you figure that out its whole new game. My biggest hurdle was stopping the rod- you need your stop to be instant and complete to impart all the energy in to the line, and once that clicked my casting got way better in general on the spot.
>>2852984Dude there's a plam tree behind u lol
I’m watching bassmaster on TV and every fight has endless clicker drag running, even while the guy is reeling. Do they pump in drag sounds to make the fight sound more exciting? Or are zoomer fisherman so retarded they reel through the drag every time? And if they are not pumping in the sound, do they require clicker drag? Even the bait casters seem to have clicker drag when most bc reels do not have clicker. At any rate, for new fisherman. DO NOT reel through the drag. It doesn’t help you, will twist your line and burn out your drag.
>>2853053i was getting a sun tan while fishing yesterday.
Best boat for weekend fishing trips/multi day trips? I can't decide between a bristol sloop or a bertram flybridge. A bertram would be convenient to get out to places quick, but I don't know if it'd be worth it much since I'll probably only be cruising at 12 knots while a sailboat is still around half that but without much of a fuel cost if at all. I just don't know how convenient fishing and preparing fish would be on a sailboat. Sugar scoops are only a thing on more expensive stuff and I just don't know how much of a pain hauling a 30+lb fish 4 feet up and over a railing and around lines would be. Either way I'm taking a sailing class in the spring anyway, but I was just curious if anyone had given either a try
>>2853095how confident are you on not puncturing your sail with your hook?it's kinda like fishing from under a tree
>>2853057its for the showdon't bother watching that bullshit, its just one big ad
So smaller flies just don't work for spinning reels right?
>>2853125Use a bobber for distance you can get ok distance slingshotting it if it has a tungsten bead
>>2853126Fair enough, now all that's left is tying the darn things on.
>>2853127I do a double davy for nymphs and stuff
>>2853127Clinch knot works great for small flies. I use a plunger hackle plier to hold the fly by the hook while tying it on, a lot of flies have hackle or something else sticking out that you don't want to smash flat. You hold the two ends of the line and twist the fly vs twisting he line around itself. You could also use forceps to hold the fly if you carry those. If you're using a tungsten head jig nymph without hackle or anything, you could do it by hand, but you'll likely still struggle with the small size of the fly. So I still use the hackle pliers for those too.
>>2853125spinning reel/rod you cast the lurefly reel/rod you cast the linespinning rods have a weigh range indication on them like 5g-18g that indicate the lure weight you can efficiently throw with itflies are light for the most of them, that's why you use them on a setup that cast the line since you can't cast the lureif you want to use a fly on spin gear you'll need to use weighted ones or add weight a way or another and you'll need a rod with a weight range low enough for it
>>2853098I'm not super concerned about the sail being punctured since I can for the most part just reef it up and drop anchor when I'm actually fishing. I'd be more worried about the rigging and lines that run off that section where I'd actually be handling the fish
>>2853147>I can for the most part just reef it up and drop anchor when I'm actually fishingwell point still stand because of rigging as you mentioned, been there done that and you have to be careful with your rod and line, but perhaps depending on size there isn't as much rigging on all sidesthe upside of sails is that they don't breakdown like an engine can and modern sailboats still have an engine for when there's no windnow i was only a passenger, i don't own one so i don't know the costs and maintenancei'd say don't jump the gun and wait for your sailing classes, might give you more insight on it and you can ask the guy for specific use cases
>>2853154Yeah I plan on waiting a good few months before even making the purchase, but I'm not super stressed about fishing off them. I'm definitely gonna talk with the instructors, but as for maintenance, used sails can be had for around $2k and depending on how responsible you are, they can last 10-15 years. Most things on a sailboat last a good portion of time. Thats why you always seem to sink money into them when you do spend. People get rid of boats when they neglect a lotta stuff at once and it all breaks down at the same time. Even with that though, to have a bare minimum sailboat operational, its still exceedingly cheap compared to similar sized power boats. You really only need a good hull, good rigging, and a running backup engine. As long as the boat hasn't been out of water for 15 years and is from a decent builder, it should never be very hard to get it going
>>2853157Why not get a jon boat? Fish bone fish flats with a fly rod. I saw this one guy fish off oil rigs in a ski doo. If he can go far out in a ski doo, you should he able to bring a small motorboat out there.
>>2853134>>2853138Thanks for the tips.
>>2853139I got some ways to add weight. My rod is rather light too.
>>2853179See>>2853095My plan is for multi day trips with it. I'd have no problem whatsoever fishing with a jon boat, but I'd like something I can fall asleep in and not get rained on. Otherwise something like a fishing kayak would be perfect
>>2853179a jet ski is way more suited for rough water than a john boat. flat bottoms are horrible in any chop, even mod v bottom ain't that good. I've been out on lakes in one with rough water and it's not safe at all.
>in NE Florida>used to catch tons of stuff off my dock without thinking about it>haven't caught a single thing since the temps droppedCheck the tides and the supposed "best times" using the tidesforfishing site. Used mullet, blue crabs, sand fleas, mud minnows, shrimp. Nothing. Used to toss in a shrimp and get a spotted sea trout almost every time. Guess even in FL fishing is mainly seasonal
