If it's within your budget, I know this is adding up(fly fishing always does...lol), but I definitely prefer my Echo traverse over my lift, but you're looking at $250 vs ~$190 for that. Lift has a medium action, traverse medium fast.

What I would do is buy an extra leader for 5X and 4X, since I fish them the most. You might get tangled in a tree and lose most of your leader. I'm imagining you can't just go to the fly shop and get a new one. The other thing I highly recommend are the smallest tippet rings you are capable of using. They stop your leader from shortening and make adding tippet easier.If it is true you have no fly shops near you, I would suggest buying some flies. I advise against RIO (don't worry about leader and tippet) and Solitude, based on personal experience, but there are other shitty fly brands I have heard of. Umpqua and MFC are the best. Get some nymphs and streamers. Skip the dry flies and floatant, but if you are really keen on surface action thus time of year, get a couple tiny foam beetles. Also, get some of the smallest airlock indicators. I hate them, but many people like them, and they can be good for beginners.

>>2851799the main downside to braid that people don't tell you is that knots are much easier to get and close to impossible to get out once they cinch down. wind knots are very easy to get if you just whip it out hard with lots of arc/slack. jerking snags can also cause them if they wrap around underwater sticks and such. you have to be mindful of these things, but braid is ridiculously sensitive.
I'm hoping to get some advice. I really like my 4 piece Presso UL rod. I am strongly considering getting a Presso Air, but I'm not sure what action I want. Unfortunately, having a chance to try it out in-person is not possible. I am looking for something with a similar power and action. I mostly fish 1/32 oz jigs, sometimes 1/16 oz, and size 0-4 Panther Martins for bluegill, bass, and trout.

This was my first summer fishing. I was using a $20 5'6 Wormgear rod/reel combo. I was just gifted an UglyStik GX2 6'6 Medium. I'm wanting to pair that with a Daiwa Fuego 2500 lt. Is that a decent enough reel? Sounds good enough for price and comparison to others in that price bracket. I've heard that the GX2 isn't very sensitive (probably still an upgrade to what ive been using though) so want to a braided mainline with a fluoro leader. I've read 10lb braid with 8lb fluoro is a good combination and could give me extra sensitivity.I've mainly been fishing for whatever I can catch (usually panfish, a couple of small bass). But I would love to catch trout, bigger bass and catfish too. I guess I'm looking for an all around setup.Any other advice on if this line setup would work well for my rod/reel and what type/brand of braid and fluoro to get?I heard berkley forward braid is great but I have no idea on fluoro leaders. I also suggest 8 strand braid vs 4x. j-braid, j-braid grand, sufix 832, etc. braid cost more but it lasts longer. for leader you could even try yo-zuri hybrid if you want lots of line for cheap. it's got less stretch than most flouro so you will get sensitivity, great knot strength, and abrasion resistance. the only downside is the thick diameter. lots of flouro is junk, and the fact that it's expensive means you gotta spend a lot to find one that isn't junk. some has shit breaking strength, some has shit knot strength, some has too much stretch to be sensitive, some is just too stiff, etc. flouro is an entire rabbit hole, and an expensive one. once again, do NOT buy anything at msrp this time of year, too many sales to be doing that.

You need to consider how big the lure is, how deep you're going to fish/how hard you want the bait to sink, and how big the actual hook in the jig is. You might want a 1/4oz head with a 3/0 hook to lightly weight a paddle tail so it swims a foot of three under the surface or you might want a 1/2 oz jig with a smaller hook if you're trying to drag bottom with a curly tail in 25 feet of moving water.

You could also talk to the local fishing shop, ask what fish are in what lakes. As for finding fish, thats trial and error. You figure out what kind of habitat your desired species likes- does it like weeds? Fallen trees? Rocks? Then find fishing spots with those features and fish them. You can probably find depth charts for lakes too i look at a lot of my local bodies of water with gpsnauticalcharts

When you're ready to fish for real, throw it out. Hopefully, you have some quality leaders and tippet or can buy them easily. I like fine tippet, but others do not. That means 5X and 4X most of the time. In the winter, go slow with your presentation. Do not rip streams through the water. Also, don't fish dry flies other than the odd BWO. Dead drifting nymphs is a good idea. You can fish them under an indicator, but I hate indicators, so I don't use them. Try various patterns, sizes, and colors. Trout will be a little more lethargic in winter but not much more. They will not wallow in deep pools like catfish.

Best boat for weekend fishing trips/multi day trips? I can't decide between a bristol sloop or a bertram flybridge. A bertram would be convenient to get out to places quick, but I don't know if it'd be worth it much since I'll probably only be cruising at 12 knots while a sailboat is still around half that but without much of a fuel cost if at all. I just don't know how convenient fishing and preparing fish would be on a sailboat. Sugar scoops are only a thing on more expensive stuff and I just don't know how much of a pain hauling a 30+lb fish 4 feet up and over a railing and around lines would be. Either way I'm taking a sailing class in the spring anyway, but I was just curious if anyone had given either a try

I use a plunger hackle plier to hold the fly by the hook while tying it on, a lot of flies have hackle or something else sticking out that you don't want to smash flat. You hold the two ends of the line and twist the fly vs twisting he line around itself. You could also use forceps to hold the fly if you carry those. If you're using a tungsten head jig nymph without hackle or anything, you could do it by hand, but you'll likely still struggle with the small size of the fly. So I still use the hackle pliers for those too.

People get rid of boats when they neglect a lotta stuff at once and it all breaks down at the same time. Even with that though, to have a bare minimum sailboat operational, its still exceedingly cheap compared to similar sized power boats. You really only need a good hull, good rigging, and a running backup engine. As long as the boat hasn't been out of water for 15 years and is from a decent builder, it should never be very hard to get it going
