i might get some ducks because i heard they eat bugs in your garden but not the vegetables. are there any downsides to owning ducks other than buying food for them?
>>
i heard they shit everywhere. if you had a big section or no kids playing in the yard then that might not matter. they also need a water feature of some sort which will need water changes or filtration. they will take up more space since they are ground roosting birds instead of inside a coop. that also means they are easier to snatch up by predators. also hope you don't like tomatoes, i read somewhere people struggle to keep tomatoes safe around them.

Rudy says go for it and what’s up bros? Haven’t seen any duck posting in a month of Sunday’s.

And its the nastiest shit you can imagine.
I have chickens and would love to get ducks but the poop is something I cant deal with. Changing out a kiddie pool with their shit water is disgusting, even if you change it daily.

they get clapped by predators very, very easily. if you are considering free ranging them you might want to consider geese instead.

Anyone telling you that any kind of poultry/waterfowl living in your garden is a good idea is full of shit. That being said, they can be very useful before/after planting, but you have to be strategic. Ducks, chickens, geese, whatever will wreck your plants even just walking on them or fucking with them out of boredom, doesn’t matter if they eat them.
I’ve raised batches of 40ish pekins every year for a few years, because they’re delicious and grow fast, but this is the first year we kept any.
So far, no problem with -30f long cold winter, and my 3 females have been laying earlier/better than my 15 chickens. The eggs are nearly twice the size and much stronger, might take some getting used to if you’re used to eating watery shit from the store, but I prefer them to chicken eggs. (Probably wouldnt eat them hardboiled though). 100% would recommend.
Like other people said, duckshit’s pretty gross, so I wouldn’t keep them stationary besides in the winter. They’re also fucking retarded so don’t expect much from them. They act like the proverbial lemming, easily startled, and they walk about as well as your average walmart shopper. Haven’t found them to be too greedy with food except when growing them out, but these grow stupid fast and get slaughtered at 7wks so thats expected.

Geese will fill your whole yard with liquid shit, they're a lot worse than ducks in my opinion.
To be fair, I've only had a couple ducks, but a sizeable pack-gaggle of geese?

But that's not all they've got going for them.
They can also be kinda aggressive and territorial. If you don't show them who's boss you're gonna get charged and believe you me they will fuck you up if you let them, be it with their beaks or their wings, you're not going out of that encounter unscathed let alone dignified.
Also it most likely won't just be the odd one out to pick a fight. If one has a bone to pick with you, be ready for some avengers assemble shit to go down.
They're also very very loud and annoying, worse than turkeys or even guinea fowls.

Tasted good though

Also this captcha is somehow even more aids than a few years ago, makes me wanna go away sooner, not a bad thing I guess.

no, who gave you this idea?
my neighbor had a bunch of geese, the only issue really is the noise they make, but you kinda just start ignoring it as background noise after a while

Building a mobile duck coop with a 190L pond. 2.5m×2.5m footprint with 2.5m×1.25m raised deck and pond area. this two-tier design effectively increases their usable space by 33%. they can use the full 6.25sqm ground access for forage and can shelter/shade/rest under the pond deck. there is a ramp they can use to access the upper deck and pond.

bottom two photos were from 3.14 and top two are from 3/21. I should be able to complete it next weekend when I get paid. so far I have only spent $135CAD. that was for the 80cm×130cm pond. I will need to purchase a second livestock panel ~$45cad, to enclose the arbor. everything else is salvage & repurposed. I found two matching 40cm children's bicycles laying by the dumpster at work. I used the rear wheels on the back (pond) end and will cut & adapt the frames and forks from them to the front of the coop so it can be easily moved & turned. the lower frame is already enclosed in poultry wire & we will cover the arbors as well. I will build a 165cm tall door and frame on the front end for ease of access. the lower frame clears the ground by 45cm. low enough to prevent escape and predators yet high enough to allow towing without dragging. even without the front wheels on, it is easy to lift and move by hand but we do have a lawn tractor and I will make an attachment option.

we live on 10 acres & raise welsh harlequins, muscovy & silver appleyards. this is for the muscovy flock. we turn out the harlequin & apples free range, but dont want to risk our 'scoveys flying away, as they are a prone to wander.

the whole project should cost aboot $180
>>
So what makes duck poop worse than other birds? Google's giving me some weirdo tea
>>
>>2864198
cool project dude
>>
Top left Muscovy, Bottom Left Harlequins & Appleyards on right.

Muscovy are for meat. their meat is unlike any other duck. it is a rare delicacy. harlequins and apples are for eggs & meat. the Harleys & apples lay upwards of 300 eggs per year. duck eggs are superior to chickens for baking, and I prefer them for eating as well.

If you have a heavy Asian population nearby you can make bank breeding ducks- if you only sell them during the month leading up to chinese new year.
Its like turkeys for Thanksgiving, except walmart doesnt have an entire freezer section packed with ducks.
