Hey /out/, peak season for foraging is upon us
Post your harvests and discuss foraging and eating wild plants itt
You do that, right?

Pic related, some wild asparagus I just picked and flowering wild garlic in my backyard, that reminds me I gotta go to the forest very soon and get more in my super secret wild garlic spot

one time i found a wild white carrot and ate it. it turns out it was hemlock and not a carrot. it was about 18 hours of extreme sickness and muscle cramps. after that it is very hard for me to eat wild things i found

Hey, you learned the basic rule of don't eat something unless you're 120% sure of what it is.
And you didn't die!
I just avoid this entire plant family, there's too many toxic lookalikes

i did taste like a carrot though

Poppy seeds will make you sleepy, maybe

Papaver rhoeas ? probably not much. You want the pods/latex though, but it's so small nobody cares to do it. Californian poppy is used as very mild sedative.

Apart from classical heroin producers ( golden triangle, indian subcontinent, now Mexico too ?)
There are areas where some pharmaceutical poppy fields exists (Czechia, west of France, probably others places) ; local users steal some pods and do extractions. You can overdose on strong poppy tea.

I'm reading a book about it right now, i would like to get into this stuff, i think it's so cool. Nothing has started growing in the forest yet but when they do i will have a look.

Amerimutt living in trip. I had a productive “scrumping” season last November. Nothing much to nibble this time of year in my area though, I don’t much like nettles and I haven’t smelled any garlic in the woods

Flowers are an extremely underrated food. Where I'm at, I'll often snag
>Manzanita: High sweetness when ripe, slightly chalky
>Banana Yucca: Citrus like with a soapy aftertaste
>Desert agave: Chewy and fibrous with a vegetable flavor like asparagus

Thankfully toxic look alkies are fairly rare where I'm at. Don't be afraid to spit something out if the flavor and texture feel off. I heavily stay away from mushrooms for that reason though. Berries and nuts are FAR easier to ID.

Also, if you know a plants harmless, try to mess around with it's leaves, roots and bark. Manzanita's everywhere near me and if you peel the bark there's a green layer underneath that is like a super sugary carrot when eating.
The berries have lasted over 2 years after being essentially freeze dried by the desert. It's extremely cool

Almost forgot picrel. I've stored them in my cabinet and forgot about them for a while. Still taste good desu.

I get dandelion, plantain, river onion, blackberries and very occasionally plums and apples. I wish it was enough to make an entirely foraged meal but they do go well in stews/baking breads.

I live in spain and here we have many abandoned lands of grapes/olives and random fig trees, in the summer I go and fill kilos of them and eat them after I wash them in spring, like an ancient meditarian king kek.

And I know they're neglected because those that I leave just rot there (and the rabbits eat them, we have many of them also, I should start hunting). People stopped caring because the price to harvest outweighs the profit they can make, and the lands are mostly owned either by boomers who barely can walk, or inherited to zoomers that live in big cities like madrid or just care not. That what you get with this stupid governments, and you can find the same fruits left to rot just KMs away being sold for high prices in stores.
