Legally it is best described as land that is being studied for its wilderness character with an eye to designating it wilderness in the future should it pass requirements. In reality it is limbo land that either there is no political appetite to make it true wilderness or it has some other human stuff like enough abandoned camps and trash and mines and whatever else that makes it impossible to become wilderness but the land agency still manages basically as wilderness.And separately the rules in wilderness are nothing with an engine and no permanent structures. A temporary electric data collection thing for research is perfectly legal.

>>2864993Well i dont remember the text of the act but de facto everyone managing wilderness has not included small solar stuff. I mean no one is banning solar panel phone chargers. It is not permanent because it can be removed without any effect to the landscape. What they shouldnt do would be to bolt it into the rock, where the only way to remove it leaves permanent holes in the rock. And the rules are different for gov research work anyway if that is what it is. Why would you take it down? What if thats the local BLM field office or a partner group collecting data? They often dont put BLM logos on things because in many places that makes things more likely to get vandalized...
