so ive got this rod from my dead grandpas estate about a year ago and im looking to turn it into a nice something for my wife to use whilst she joins me at our cabin (rural missouri in local ponds). she more enjoys just worms and grabbin bluegigi whilst i try to find new spots. rod is cleared for 16 pounds, but was made in the 80's i think. 5 1/2 meter long.

tell me am i just better off buying a whole new setup? if so budget can go up to $150

For that rod? Find an old Zebco 202 and give it some TLC.

But yeah, your wife would probably appreciate something a bit newer, and less of a hassle.
