Just this week I found one on me for the first time in my life. I just noticed a little speck on my lower side area then scratched at it and pulled this guy off pretty easily without even knowing what it was. Weird thing is it was clearly already dead with the legs curled up, but I’d only went hiking 4 days before that and it doesn’t look like it ever got that big compared to the ones I’ve seen on animals. Less than half the length of my pinky nail

Once they start swelling like that, they've been on you for a while. 4 days is crazy if it was actually dug in for that long. If it was actually dead when you pulled it off, it could also be that you just pulled the body off and the head is still there. It's pretty common for that to happen once they get dug in well and especially if you're just pulling them off with your fingers and not a pair of tweezers or something.
