Is this lifestyle dead in America? Are there any real vagabonds left?
>>
he was a political conservative, as proven by him joining his college republicans club, so its better he died, he would only have gone on to spread homophobia and bigotry if he had lived
>>
yeah there are still some. its a lot harder now though because people are more anti hobo

Good.
I hate the homeless so much.
Go build a fucking cabin in the woods you degenerate fuck, or die in a bus, I literally don’t care as long as you stop committing property crimes and leaving your garbage and literal shit on the streets.

Stop romanticizing mental illness.

Being severely mentally ill makes him progressively aligned, sorry kid, I don't make the rules.

when did I do this?

It's honestly impressive this guy wasn't captured by methheads and used as a human rape doll or otherwise murdered by nons. It seems like the northwest and northeast are only getting shittier and shittier making this pretty much impossible

The number of hobos in inversely proportional to the state of the economy. As things decline, there are fewer hobos. It’s counterintuitive but we can look at historic examples in the post-war era.

The people were the hippies of the late 60’s and early 70’s. Deciding to just travel to another city so you could smoke weed, have sex, and listen to rock music all day was pretty easy because of an insanely good economic safety net. When you got tired of being a listless hippie bum, you could get a hair cut, change you clothes, go to the nearest factory, shake the bosses hand, and have a job that afforded a single-earner middle class lifestyle before lunch. The risk of just being a bum for life was nil.

Things cooled by the late 70’s because the economy be began to falter, so the age of the traveling bum ended. Who were the bums of the late 70’s? We don’t have an image to really go in because it wasn’t a thing. It was too risky economically.

By the mid 80’s and into the 90’s a strong economy produced a new batch of bums, this time with a punk and later an grunge aesthetic. That rollled over into the crusty kids of the mid 2000’s.

The 2008 housing crash and the 2012 financial crash was the death of hobos. Rents began to skyrocket, so full time employment was needed unless you straight up lived in the gutter (as opposed to 6 dudes sharing some rat infested shithole in the ghetto). Gentrification in a lot of the countries semi-safe ghettos played no small part, as did the conversion of so many run down industrial areas into high tent condos. All of this has only gotten worse. This is also why rock music died (part of it).

Today, packing up and heading to a new city because it sounds like fun is just too risky for most would be hobos. Everywhere you go, the cost of living requires too much work.

That wasn’t much of an issue in 1992.

Housing prices are taking care of it, don't worry.

Hobos and Vagabonds as a life and culture did really just die out with the beginning of midcentury america - cheap housing in the suburbs, the expansion of highways instead of relying on rails, and the loosening of immigration-worker programs made it so a travelling band of farmhands or just a random guy riding the rails between towns really didnt have a place to exist in the US. Nowadays the only vagabonds are drug addicts in-between crack dens and Hobo has already been made into a synonym for Bum.

oh look it's this thread again
