Caught my second endangered mussel. Yet to catch a single fish jigging because I'm a rookie. Kind of annoyed but I can't be mad.
>>
>>2878825
Where are you fishing and what are you hoping to catch? Curly tails goat btw
>>
>>2878828
That was on the edge of a sudden drop and I was hoping for perch. I don't know my geography so I'm struggling to find the word to describe the spot. It was at a narrow end of a lake. I've seen many perch following my lures to the shore but no bite.
>>
>four threads in the 'log
>>
>>2878829
Sounds like you've got the right idea. What retrieves are you trying? My go-tos are usually a steady swim retrieve, a lift and drop retrieve, or a snappy retrieve. Sometimes a steady bouncy retrieve does well. Id also probably be using a white curly tail but i don't think it matters that much. Also, if you're getting follows, a slight downsize might convince a hesitant bite- in a pinch you can literally just cut a centimeter off the nose of your grub to make it smaller.
>>
>>2878839
>a snappy retrieve
As soon as i posted this i decided this was a little ambiguous.
I snap the rod tip a foot or so almost like im setting the hook, then drop.the rod tip so the jig falls on total slack. Usually i get grabbed on the drop and dont feel it and when i go to do the next snap i set the hook.
>>
>>2878839
>>2878842
Thank you for the advice man. I've tried a steady swim, stop-n-go, and lift-n-drop. My smallest jigs are 2.75 inches so I'll prioritize getting smaller ones. Do you think my fluoro leader being about 10 inches could be an issue? Sometimes I've seen fish check out the spinning metal part where the braided line meets the fluoro line.
>>
>>2878855
Small curly tail grubs that are good are hard to find. The ones youve got should work for perch.

Im not sure im understanding your setup. A flouro leader? Like, for pike?

Today was the final day of my trip. Late start again. Fishing was slow and difficult. However, I got this big bow to bite. My PB. I thought it was a 20, so I went to crazy lengths to measure it. Turned out to be only 17. It got dark, and it sounded like a human baby was nearby. Kind of creepy.
>>
>>2878876
Nice fish. May have heard a fox. They have some weird calls.
>>
>>2878858
I do occasionally try for pike and zander, hence the leader. But just small ones since my braided line is just 0,12mm. Planning on buying a stronger line.
My rod is this 232cm medium one which to my understanding isn't super optimal for perch

With my desire to learn baitcasters undeterred from birds nests, I picked up a Pflueger casting combo today, a PRESLP701, for about $110.

7' one piece rod, full cork handle (like i like), medium-heavy, fast action. Came with the PresidentLP reel, 6.5:1. Havent done much besides finger fuck yet, but it feels smooth. The lock tab is a bit stiff, gonna carefully disassemble and get some better lube in before i spool it up.

Gonna use the 15# spider wire braid i got handy, and the birds nest i trashed the other day will get used to practice alberto knots with a roll of old ass trillene i found hiding in the shed.

Pflueger reccs i start with 20# braid, but for learning (and catching stickfish) 15 should be ok.

Looking more at boats, I can see that they are definitely not worth it for me. I mostly fly fish in areas you can only wade. Boats are just so expensive and require so much upkeep. It would be nice to go out on a friend's boat once in a while, but there's no way I'm going to think about buying one for a long time to come.

Flies too big? Assuming the previous owner is not a retard, they probably aren't too big. In my area, only retards buy 5 WTs, which is probably what you were looking at, right? Tell us more and post pictures. Unless it's an Amazon rod, you probably got a great setup. Fly line is a lot more important than people realize. It could be worn out and needs to be replaced.

The previous owner used it once, and is not a fisherman at all.
It’s a maxcatch “extreme” rod and “eco” reel so yeah seems like a basic Amazon setup. It’ll work for now.
yes the flies that came with it are rather large they seem to be size 8 or larger while I’ve been catching everything on size 14-16. Including 16 on a size 16 zebra midge in one morning, “retard”
No wonder no one likes fly fishermen. “Did you just think about buying the most popular rod weight? God you’re retarded! You need the one degree lighter one!”
>>
>>2878940
Went and gave this Pflueger set up a test drive today, pretty amazing what a correct set up will do for you. The UL rod i started with would be best paired with a BFS reel, I must've conned myself into thinking I could do BFS things with a standard casting reel.

Only a couple of small back lashes this time, but i did lose a rapala countdown, krokodile, and a softbait. Don't recall this spot being so rocky, but i dont have any floats big enough for the lures I was using. I also managed to sit on a little float and break it. Still no fish, as expected.

Today I learned:

Need to respool for better line tension

Bigger floats

Smooth out my casting technique, I've been whipping for years when I shouldn't have.
>>
>>2879054
I also snagged an Ozark Trail chest rig thing the other day, been farting around with it a bit. Idk what the line management thing is for, but it seems like a handy little guy for quick trips, waders or small boaters. The little fold-down work station thing could come down another inch, gets a bit crowded sometimes. A guy could pack a lot of shit in there, with smart packing.

Ive managed to fit a couple small tackle boxes, simple tools, and small essentials. Having easy access to em is nice.

Since I now have a working kayak setup, I want to go after bowfin in the Upper Mississippi. I know everyone talks about fishing for them in the spring, but spring is a long time away from now. Can they still be effectively targeted in sloughs right now? What tips can you give for my area and this time of year?

Honestly sounds like a great first rod to learn on- id spend a bunch of time harassing bluegills with it to learn casting and fundamentals.

>>2879050
Honestly i hate 5 weights, they only make sense if you're only going to have one rod and fish very specifically medium everything- id tell a newbie to considrr where they're going to actually fish and get a 4 or a 6 and if you can get two rods a 4 and 8 will do just about everything. I wouldnt call someone a retard for having a 5, though, they're servicable, just not my preference.

>>

>they make a musky stick for $300 and its got me considering making poor financial decisions
the price tag doesn't necessarily make it better
i bought last year the NGT profiler travel carp rod for about 20 pounds (plus import and delivery so about 40 euros total) and it's fairly stiff so it happen to be a great pike rod too, it's my most used rod this year so i bought a second one if i ever need to, outside of all the old stuff i inherited it's my cheapest rod yet my favorite
>>
>>2879159
Yeah nah ive had plenty of budget gear punch well above its price point, my only hesitation (besides that itd wind up being a 500 dollar combo after line and reel) is just that theres not much information out there about whuff rod co- all the bigger vrands you can find 17 reviews for each rod in the lineup but whuff still seems to be under the radar.
>>
>>2879166
Aw damn it musky fool is having some kind of sale where they're taking 15% off everything and i can get the rod and reel for $350; they just dont sell the line i want for it on their website
>>
>>2879168
anyway, what's the point of using fly gear to target esox? doesn't a streamer work just as well as a jighead? and you get a drag on spin gear
i mean i get the point of fly gear for anything that target topwater, but other than that is seem suboptimal and for hipsters
>>
i got a clean cut on a line the other day while carp fishing, so i guess pikes like krill boilies
if i use a metal or fluoro line with a big knot will the carps be bothered and spit it out before i set the hook or should it work?

>>2879168
>>2879166
>>2879154
Well it turns out my impulse control is worse than i thought. Just gotta decide on a line- im.pretty confident im going to get a wulff ambush, but i might get a rio eliete predator.
>>2879170
>what's the point of using fly gear to target esox
Its fun, and added challenge
>doesn't a streamer work just as well as a jighead
Sometimes, sometimes better, sometimes worse, it all depends on what the fish want on a given day
>you get a drag on spin gear
You get a drag on fly gear too, i usually put muskies on the reel
>suboptimal
Thats where the fun is, its added challenge and adventure. I already have an echo musky woth a sonar titan s3/5/7 line for streamers but i want a setup.woth a floating line for poppers and times when i want to fish the top two or three feet of the water column.
>>
>>2879173
>You get a drag on fly gear too
it's primitive even compared to 50s spin reels
>>
>>2879175
Whats primitive about one-way roller bearings and carbon drag disks?
>>
>>2879184
it not being actually dissociated from the handle action and most fly reels don't have anti return at all, or not being able to disengage it with a lever to pull some line and stuff like that
>>
>>2879186
You actually dont want a fly reel to fully freespool or itll backlash, even ripping line off with the drag too loose will back lash it. Secondly, the handle being integral to the spool makes the handle primitive, not the drag.
>>
>>2879197
you're missing the point which is entry level spin reels have every feature, integrated better and able to function independently from each other with no issue, a fly reel become overpriced with a single of these features alone
also the freespool feature on baitrunners have it's own drag to prevent backlash
>>
i'm just getting into fishing
i was thinking of getting this https://www.basspro.ca/p/pflueger-trion-spinning-combo-101766829-101766829
but i don't like the line weight 6-10 lbs and the 1/16 - 3/8 oz. lure weight
so i was thinking of getting this rod https://www.basspro.ca/p/bass-pro-shops-micro-lite-graphite-spinning-rod-101715027
and I'm unsure about the reel, i hear a 2000 or 2500 series would be good?

I have Northern pike, walleye, sauger, muskellunge, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, yellow perch, black crappie, rock bass, pumpkinseed, bluegill, channel catfish, brown bullhead, yellow bullhead, freshwater drum, common carp, burbot, lake sturgeon, longnose gar, lake whitefish, brook trout, lake trout, rainbow trout, brown trout.
>>
>>2879205
what in that list do you actually want to target with what method and what kind of money do you want to put in?
because if the answer is everything i got a meme answer https://www.basspro.ca/p/shakespeare-ugly-stik-catfish-spinning-rods
with this reel https://www.amazon.ca/-/en/OKUMA-Moulinets-Avenger-ABF-6Bb/dp/B07Z6H9JBZ? spooled with braid
you'll struggle throwing small lures for panfish or trout but other than that you're good, well you'll hardly find a rod that can do everything
>>
>>2879206
I just want to get the majority of them and using artificial lures. Probably $200 tops for a rod+reel.
I really want a cork handle rod.
>>
>>2879207
Of course I'll switch to float fishing on the same rod as needed.
>>
>>2879207
do you have some gear covering a part of it already? because if your answer is actually everything the carp catfish and esox limit your choices and my meme answer is actually the good one, at least for the reel, you can actually do everything on that one
>>
>>2879209
>do you have some gear covering a part of it already?
No, I'll have to get everything like lines, leaders, hooks, lures, landing net, tools, etc. But I wanted to get a general rod that I wouldn't have to replace.
>>
>>2879210
>I wanted to get a general rod
well you see the thing is a rod is designed to throw lures within a weight range, bellow that range you cast poorly, above it you risk breaking the rod, so it's hard having a rod that do everything, unless i go for something very specific i usually have two rods with me
maybe go for cheaper stuff, most of the time i just walk into my local shop and ask what they have cheap within a cast range and go with it

NTA but pic related is the same price as those plastic jon boats but the extra width makes them much more stable when you want to stand.

>>
>>2879205
Should be fine. I've caught fish from tiny bluegill to good size gar and catfish on a 3000 reel and 7 foot medium rod with 10 pound mono
>>
>>2879213
Looks like a good design and perfect to have fun on the water.
>>
>>2879206
Pretty strong setup. Like anon says, maybe a little difficult to work the lighter tackle but can handle bigger weight and fish.
>>
>>2879205
Bruh. You just said you want to target everything with a single rod. That's not reasonable. 6 lb line or less is what you need for trout. That and a light, sensitive rod. Typical bass fishing requires a much stiffer rod. And musky fishibg requires an even heavier rod. Those musky lures can destroy a bass rod and reel.
I got into fishing wanting to do everything with one rod and for cheap. Now, I have spent thousands of dollars on fishing gear and work in a fishing shop. Today's my day off, but I went in anyway to buy some stuff. There are plenty of species I'd like to one day catch that I haven't even fished for. Most of them are local. The reason I haven't even fished for them yet is because I'm busy doing the other types of fishing. You don't need to fish for everything to have a good time. You don't need to catch trophies to have a good time.
Here are your options. Pick an all-around lighter action rod that can do bass, walleye, panfish, trout, like a medium-light. Get an ultra-light specifically for panfish and trout. Get a medium fast bass rod. I would say option one is your safest bet. Maybe, the next step is to get an even nicer medium-light. Maybe you pivot into bass or trout really hard and get a proper setup for either. Maybe, you decide to get a couple catfish rods and do something entirely different.
The annoying thing about new customers like yourself is that you have no idea what you want to do and are so confident that you do know what you want. If you get into it like I did, dropping tons of money won't be a big deal. I'm a cheapskate by the way. If you don't get into it like me, maybe, you have some good times, and that's it. Nice gear is really nice.
>>
>>2879216
i know right? pretty big fan of the reel, okuma do some pretty compact reels and fairly cheap while having decent quality, with braid you can throw anything so you can use it on a light rod for small stuff, and the 4000 one got a 22lb drag so you can pull out almost anything that come near a coast or bank, and it got a freespool feature for carp or esox deadbaiting
>>
>>2879217
I don't know what I want to fish and you're right, I'll probably ask the store staff what's the most numerous fish to catch and aim for that.

I only sound like I know what I want because I've been autistically playing Russian Fishing 4 and I was thinking to go for a rod that has wider rangers for line weight and lure weight for the rod itself.
>>
>>2879220
wider ranges*
>>
>>2879205
don't buy a bunch of tackle off the jump. trust me. you won't use 75% of it. you gotta try things little by little and find what styles you like. I'd suggest starting with a medium light rod. it will be the most versatile.
>>
>>2879220
don't buy multiple rods at first. just get a medium light, 8lb line, and a 2000-2500 reel. and a few lures that are 1/4-3/8oz weight. that wukk civer bass, small pike, and lots of other shit. you can panfish with a medium light too, only crappie are harder to land without an ultralight because of their paper mouth. you have to learn first and see if you even enjoy it, pretty much everyone goes hog wild and buys a fuckton of lures and tackle when they start and end up never using most of it kek.
>>
>>2879222
>>2879223
I definitely want multiple lures and to try different retrieval techniques like speed up, stop & go, twitch, jig step, walk the dog, etc. But I'm sure that won't all work on the same rod as you need different types of lures.
>>
>>2879224
And that with lures needing probably different rods since it will attract different types of fish.
>>
>>2879205
>>2879217
Also a noob here and I'm seconding the medium-light rod.
Get the cheap combo and a handful of lures and start catching fish. Don't over think it.
I have a medium light moderate fast action and I catch bluegill, pumpkin seed, crappie, pickrel, large and small mouth bass on 8lb mono. It's not the best at casting tiny lures for panfish and I can't horse a bass out of thick cover but it catches everything in my local lake besides catfish.
My next rod will either be tailored for species or a technique I want to try.

lures come in all kinds of sizes and weights. you can fish a whole range of lures on one rod, so long as they aren't too light or too heavy for the rod. that's why I said, for a medium light rod(which is very versatile for hardbaits) you should look for lures that are 1/4-3/8oz. yu can fish crankbaits, jerkbaits, topwaters, etc all on the same rod. you only need lighter rods and heavier rods if throwing lighter or heavier lures. you match the rod to the lure 99% of the time, not to the targeted fish species. the type of lure is what you match to the targeted fish species.

This only has 1/16 - 3/8 oz. lure weight which is why I was worried on getting this combo. It is medium light power though.

Now you're just moving goal posts, you said the drag on a fly reel is inherently more primitive than leather drag washers and back-reeling, then you said "actually the handle is why the drag is primitive and also muh freespool" and now you're just saying "spin reels better ree"

As for having brakes on the freespool of a fly reel to prevent backlash- what if we just use the drag? Usually the amount of tension required to keep a fly spool from over running and the amount of drag you want to start fighting a fish with are about the same.

I can admit a lot of fly reels are overpriced for what they are, but to call a fully-sealed carbon fiber drag system with a one-way roller bearing fitted to a cnc machined aerospace aluminum frame and spool primitive is disingenuous as best.

The bottom line is that a spinning reel and a fly reel have wildly different use cases, and if i tried to use a spinning reel or even a conventional or baitcasting reel as a fly reel the experience would be miserable, just like if i tried to make a fly reel work for spinning gear it would be miserable. Trying to equate the two is like trying to equate a lawn tractor to a weed whacker just because they both cut grass.
>>
>>2879229
that's why people call you retarded, you didn't even get the point and then you compare a feature that barely exist on most fly reels, and with limitations to boot, to something that's standard on every spin reel
>>
>>2879228
rod ratings can be all over the place. regardless, you can get much better deals on gear if you order clearance stuff on tackle sites, but it's up to you. generally you're getting overcharged for combos in terms of what you're getting.. I know you said you wanted cork, but for an example, the daiwa aird-x is $50 and it's thin and lightweight, yet not brittle. but there are tons of rods online. some people prefer to feel a rod in store, I get that. you just have a very limited selection. with decades of fishing and lots of money spent under my belt, my honest suggestion would be for anyone starting out to buy a $20-30 shimano reel, and spend the rest on a decent rod. the shimanos are very smooth and hold up decently. there is no reason to buy an expensive reel until you learn how to maintain them. chances are you buy a $100 reel and it feels like shit after a year because you didn't maintain it, layed it in sand, or didn't properly utilize your drag when fighting fish. or you pulled snags with the rod/reel. learn first with cheap shit.

Anon with the long post here. Do try different lures. It's easy to get stuck in a one track way of fishing, which isn't always fun or effective. Just don't go overboard. I don't know your area or what you want to target, but if I had a customer wanting to target bass and walleye and wanted to try a wide range of baits, I'd recommend a whacky rig, jigs with soft plastic swimbaits, and crankbaits. There are tons of other techniques in addition to these, many of which are also accessible, but you don't need to try them all to get started. One thing I also tell people is that it's good to have every single color, but that's not realistic. You only need three: light, bright, and dark. It doesn't matter which ones you choose, but just make sure you get three baits that fit those criteria, especially when talking about soft plastics. Light could be white, bright could be chartreuse, and dark could be black and blue. The majority of what I and my coworkers do is fish a paddletail swimbait on a jig. You don't have to get carried away with it.

Does the RGB plague ever end? The sales pitch:

>The Floating FlashBomb by HammerBombs focus the LED lights into the water to draw the fish up to your lure.

>FlashBombs have motion activated Red/Green/Blue LED lights that stimulate predatory responses in fish. They're activated on the cast and can be re-activated by hard jigs on the retreive.

>Battery life is estimated at 1500 casts and each FlashBomb is guaranteed to work up to 1 month from time of purchase.

Speaking of floats: could i use a weighted float, or nigger rig a bigger one to meet the weight rating of my rod, and still cast ultralights?

Say, a 3/8s weighted float with a little 1/16 swimmer? I lament the loss of the countdown last week, my theory was sound but excecution flawed.

Anons make good points, anon, but consider one of those basic bitch combo pack things:
>basic ass rod
>basic ass spincaster

>variety pack of soft baits

Idk what the prices are, but consider one of those and get your feet wet. If you end up hating it, youre only out a few bucks instead of alot.

I got to call a black coworker a coon today. Spot secrecy is kind of a point of contention where I work. Anyway, he asked me where I was going. I said none of your business (although it's not like I'd keep a spot from him). And then said, Coon, which is the spot I was going to. It made him laugh too, so that was good.
I went there saw out of state plates for the second time in as many visits, this time being the first time I'd actually fish it. Lots of stocker rainbows. It is a remote creek that looks great and also fishy, but it's got a bunch of rainbows. I caught one brown. It would be a great place for wild browns.

are these innertube things worth anything or are they just memes?

I normally bank fish on reservoirs and I don't own and at this point don't really want a kayak or anything else to paddle out deeper, but I like the idea of smaller and lighter inflatable thing
>>
>>2879321
I was considering one of those for wading rivers (no reservoirs near me). I've decided totally against it in favor of a paddleboard. I own a kayak, so I don't need to buy one, but if I did want to spend some money, I'd drop it on that.
>>
>>2879320
I didnt realize they were actually i presumed "last cast sale" meant like "end of the season" or something that sucks. Also concerns me a little about my order, the rod isnt listed on the site anymore and it still hasnt shipped, i hope i didnt accidentally buy a rod that didnt physically exist.
>>
>>2879325

I read up on it, looks like the shop was closed the last couple days which explains why my order hasnt progressed. It also seems they're only closing the musky fool.fly.shop but still intend on carrying on the musky fool brand. Not sure exactly what that entails, but id assume that means they're going to turn in to a fishing apperal company
>>
>>2879321

also some anon here bought a foldable kayak a while ago and seemed pretty happy with it, i wonder if he's around to update his opinion

>>
>>2879339

>>
>>2879321
those were basically designed for yuros because most don't have anywhere to store/transport kayaks. they also fish small bodies of water like slow moving rivers. there is really no point to get one of those just to fish 20ft off the bank. you will be fighting even the slightest gust of wind in that shit and paddling at like 1mph with serious effort so going any distance is out of the question. .they're probably also more expensive than an inflatable paddleboard or cheap pelican kayak.

First im getting a penn internstional 50 and filling it with 900 yards of 200lb power pro hollow ace, then im splicing in a 150lb top shot to fill the rest of the spool. Then im going to source a solid fiberglass 'infinity blank' to build a custom rod for that winch. This setup will mostly serve as a decoration woth hopes and dreams of goliath grouper, surf fishing for properly big sharks, and maybe even targeting monster pelagics if i get a shot. At it. Then im gonna get a BFS combo, a light spinning surf rod for launching spoons in the 3/4 to 3 oz range, probably 1-2oz predominantly. Id probably get a pair of medium lights, one for spooks and one for soft plastic swim baits, so that i have anything and everything i could want to fuck around at the ohio river. Id probably spend about a grand just replacing cheap spinning reels in my arsenal with diawa BGs. Id also buy a small assortment of redington behemoth fly reels and spare spools, and some fly lines to get more capability out of my existing fly combos just by having more lines available.

Like as not, i had a good 2 foot lead on it. I dont recall the name of the cast itself, but a modified brighton where you use your hips and a lil step to transfer weight is what i went for. I did it a bit with the celilo a while back on the lake... Loaded it hella heavy and swear i sent it 50 yards or so downrange. Couldnt see the tackle, but the splash and sound was like a fat kid belly flopping off the high dive, lmao.

if you're going to pick things separately like the other anon suggested, i recommend the okuma alaris als-30
it's small, it's light, i's cheap, it's reliable, and it got a 15lb drag so you can still pull an eventual big fish pulling your line
>>
>>2879463
A diawa laguna (7' ultralight rod, 2000 size spinning reel) setup would probably do you well. Id run 10lb braid as a mainline and a fairly long mono leader of appropriate size (4-10lb mono)
>>
>>2879492
OK. Get a Daiwa Presso. I like the 6'6" 4 piece UL. My preference would be to get a Daiwa Regal 2000, but that reel is $80, and the rod is like $110. Instead, you can get a Laguna 2500 (spools are small) for $55 or a Shimano Sienna 2000 for $35. The rod matters most, and it's a great rod. I bought two Presso Air spinning rods and one BFS rod because of that rod. Yesterday, I fished with the 4 piece because I didn't bring the fancy Airs with me, and I had a great time. In the future, you can always get a better reel. I like to fish for bass, bluegill, and trout, mostly the latter two, with that rod, so I use 4 lb mono.

I'd probably go with that Compre Lite I suggested personally. Either the 6'0 UL(CPSLT60UL) or 6'9 UL(CPSLT69UL). the 6'0 will be "crisper" for things like twitching , and the 6'9 will be slightly more whippy, but still probably pretty crisp because it's not a bottom-bin blank. it's got better guides/insert material than most rods at the pricepoint also. and it looks aesthetically simply and pleasing with the cork and reelseat. as for the reel, something 1000 size. A Shimano Sahara FJ is great if you can ever find one on sale, but that's over budget otherwise. Even cheap Shimanos are pretty smooth, as well as budgetmid-tier daiwas like the Legalis. Daiwa raised all of it's prices by like $20 due to "tariffs" though, so their shit is kinda overpriced at msrp now compared to shimano, and that's coming from someone who has more daiwa gear. there are plenty of good UL rods, but lots of them have decent blanks and pretty cheap guides, or the other way around. shimano is hard to beat per dollar when it comes to getting both and that's also a newer refreshed rod series so it's not some 10 year old design for $100. aside from some more expensive rod on a good sale deal it seems pretty hard to beat overall.

1/2 CRCT caught on the fly
Hatfish jumped like 6in out of a 3ft wide pool for the hopper as I dipped a hopper-dropper just to let it drift down a little.
I caught some great fish this summer, but for somewhere I didn’t expect to end up, and given the average size of the fish in this creek, this might be my best catch ever.
Also technically first catch on the fly rod even if there was no cast at all.
Caught about an 8incher later, on a spruce twig with line tied to it.
There might be two more chances for different cutties before summer is over, maybe a redside, either way I’m quite happy with how things turned out after it started with infinite pikeminnow

How did you find that out? Visual identification is not enough to determine cutthroat subspecies. I thought I caught two different types of cutthroat, asked CPW for identification help, and was told they can only be identified by genetic testing. Obviously, if you know a body of water has a particular subspecies, then you can reasonably assume that's what it is.

>>
>>2879759
there are lots of goof one. pedal kayaks are good for covering distance, but not good for shallow rivers. so you have to pick your poison and deal with the shortcomings. however, there are a few that paddle decently enough with the drive removed so that you can do that in shallow rivers. you also have to weight performance vs stability, because there is a big trade-off in designs. then lastly there ar thngs like rigging. some are more simple and some are more complex, the latter usually meaning bigger more barge like thus less performance. lastly, if you're one of those people that's gonna put a motor on it, there is absolutely ZERO reason to buy a pedal drive kayak. you're just getting less deck space, more weight, less more complexity/price, and you will never use the pedals. now that all that is out of the way... a few quick general summaries of the "top" brands that offer pedal kayaks
> jackson
probably the best performing overall if you have to use a paddle in shallower water. the lower part of the drive kicks up flush when you hit something. naturally, this means the drive is a little more complex and has more slop in it.
> native
the best pedal drive because it's direct gear driven, no chains or belts. no slop. cons are that most of their boats are a barge, unless you're talking the very simplistic Manta Ray Propel which is a pretty old design soley focused on performance. it's also cheaper than most, but fairly cramped cockpit. it's not a big stable barge if that's what you want
> Hobie
good efficient and different drive design. kicks up somewhat when you hit stuff. has a high performance model called the revo which is not meant for standing up in. think a sports car. then things like the pro angler which is a stand up fishing kayak by design, but it's amssive and heavy as hell. hobies are absurdly overpriced for what you get. that's the biggest con.
>>
oh and then I forgot old town. quality, but pretty damn overpriced and their designs are basically all barges. one of the better actual drives though, right behind native.

Flies could go either way, reels might need servicing and almost certainly.want new line and backing but should otherwise be fine to put in to service. Juat make sure you save some of the flies for sentimental purposes, wouldnt want to wake up one day and realize you lost your grand dads last fly after hes not around to tie you more.

I kinda doubt he tied these. Seems like he got a bulk thing of old stuff, which was his favorite thing to do. There’s a panther marlin in here from post 2014, and the maxima ultragreen is like early 2000s at the oldest.
My uncle says he never really got into fly fishing, but my mom says she remembers him tying flies.
So actually I have no clue either way, I didn’t find any fly tying material or tools ever

I would want to take a look at them and see how much they're worth.
One day, an old guy called my store, and I picked up. It's kind of against store policy to advise people on pricing used items (we do a biannual consignment sale), but this was an old man and I was curious. He bought a vintage reel lot at a garage sale, and it turned out, based on my searches, that he had a potential profit of thousands of dollars. He had some fancy Mitchells, Pfluegers, etc.

What are your favourite baits, anons? Something you chuck on the hook when things are slow and almost always catch something

For me it's gotta be prawns and nippers (those little bastards you suck up from the sand with a pump).

For freshwater, worms have outcaught every other bait for me. Unless I'm using pilchards or other small dead baitfish, almost always guarantees me an eel or a cat.

I tried crickets from a pet store that you get for feeding lizards once, but had no hits, ended freeing the survivors into the grass. Might give it another crack in summertime on a light running sinker

Why arent they popping out the spool? Theyre keeping together and fishing the line in, out and around! Granted im green af with em, but popping the spool out, running the line thru the guide and tying on seems so much easier than fighting the line on a whole ass reel.

I suppose its for on the water? Dont have to worry about the side plate falling into the abyss?

Sometimes the water provides, sometimes it does not.

Do not stray from the path, wander until you may wander no more. There will be bites aplenty once you have travelled the road.

Also get some fat juicy worms on a simple running sinker rig and get some bells on the rod tip. Something will definitely inhale it eventually. Keep one rod on bait and scout around with the second rod w/ lures, flies, etc, etc.

Pedal kayaks are mainly great in big open waters like lakes, deep rivers, and saltwater. Depending on the make, you can retract or life up the driving fins when you hit shallower water, and you'd always have oars anyways as backup.

For accessories, I'd make sure you have a nice esky strapped in behind you to hold all your bait and catches, sturdy rod holders bolted to the sides, and a cheap little yak mounted fish finder. And ofc it's handy to have all your main shit strapped/tied to the yak incase of a capsize. Investing in a good yak trolley is also worth it, you can get wheels for them that somewhat act like stabilisers when you fold it up when in the water.

general info surf fishing is all about finding breaks in the waves where sand bars and troughs lay. it helps to know which way the tide is going as well. when you find the troughs that's where you'll be dropping your bait or lures into. otherwise it's just blind casting into miles of open.

Indeed, fishing is a art. Much of my time out is on the river... If i do a bait rod, would I use a heavy sinker on a dropshot or some shit to keep it mostly in place with the current?

For the scout pole, I presume a reasonably heavy jig is in order, to feel out the bottom? Lots of weed and rock at the spot in my pic, but fairly shallow, up to 6 feet or so in spots.

Ill continue wandering, my wanderlust gnaws in hunger... I wasnt the only one skunked in the area tho, 5 float boats went by with nada, and a gramps with grandson in tow waded in for nothing too, doing the dark arts of fly fishing. I did see the little ripples where they feed, but I suspect all the noise scared em off. The wind picked up shortly after I arrived, so the current is going one way and the wind the opposite... Just another day here tho.

Maybe next time the buggers will do the reverse of gif semi-related.

That it is, lad. Any day on the water brings something new. Depending how late you stay out, there's a certain serenity to being in the ass of nowhere, totally alone, just you, a headlamp and the line. You out in MT by chance? Might even see some funny lights off in the distance near the crazies..

I fish lots of various rivers both deep, shallow, fast and slow. A running sinker usually never does me wrong. Normally a regular ball sinker, size 2-3, and depending on the current I might up the weight to about a 4. Pic rel is the setup, you can use that sliding snap with a drop sinker on it for minimal movement, or just have a ball sinker (naturally tends to roll around slightly, which helps cover ground and keep the bait somewhat mobile).

Drop shot rigs are also good, I use paternosters sometimes at the beach -- big fish usually don't give a shit if the bait is weighted. But with a running sinker, the idea is those little skittish river fish grab the bait and take off without feeling the weight of the sinker. Then once the slack runs out, the weight will suddenly engage and often set the hook automatically. Also in picrel I've got a smaller stinger hook that's just loose on the line before you tie on the main, bigger hook. Optional, but when I use them, I swear it's always the stinger hook that gets the fish. Also means you can double the amount of bait you're presenting in the water

Also speaking of the scouting rod, if it's really weedy, try out a carolina rig as opposed to a jighead to mix it up. And rig a soft plastic that mimics what the fish are feeding on, both colour and formwise. If it's an estuary, i'll rig a little natural coloured soft yabby, but on some rivers a dragonfly nymph works better. I've also had luck on a light jighead with those goofy balls with dozens of wriggly tentacle arms that look like an urchin. Forget the name. There's some stinky shit called xfactor too, that I ritualistically apply to soft plastics, and possibly through placebo, it helps me catch more fish.

Little spinners are good too, anything similar to a mepps that doesn't go too deep in the water. Have also had luck with shallow divers that have a rattle inside them, when I've fished really murky/muddy rivers - common in Aus.

Tight lines, man

>You out in MT by chance?
Nay, I'm down south aways but the climate is similar late spring to early fall.

I presume I'd want something floaty on the end of the running sinker, like soft plastics or power bait? Stinger hooks and sliding snaps are news to me, I've been wary of Carolina rigs too, lost a few to the river... But such is my lack of skill.

>>2880267
The water on my last trip was clear, shallow and not super fast. But closer to home it gets dirty and speeds up, likely from some of the rain we've been getting.

Hey, lads. Camping for the first time, outside of a couple of awful Scout trips. I'm fishing in an area too far to make a day trip, so I thought it would be an excellent opportunity to try out car camping. I'm underprepared in terms of research. I didn't have a campsite picked out, and I am pretty much clueless as to where I'll fish tomorrow. I'm also camping in a place and manner that is kind of a gray area. I should be up early enough before anyone sees me. Wish me luck, anons.
>>
>>2880312
imagine you get your line cut by a pike on first bite
>>
>>2880314
Yeah, with a sliding sinker snap you can attach whatever weight you need. They're handy as fuck, and I use them for both fresh and saltwater. This cheapo amazon image also demonstrates the same rig I use.
As for the bait being floaty, not entirely necessary, but certainly if you're using boilies, or corn, or powerbait, etc, it'll naturally float, which helps the presentation. You can actually add a very small fixed float just before the hook which helps the bait be whirling around in the current, esp if very weedy bottom. Only a float that's weaker than your sinker ofc.
And if I've got a stinger hook, I'll have maybe a powerbait ball on the smaller hook for trout, and have the main hook loaded with live worms. Soft plastics will probs do fuckall on this rig, unless you coat it in something really stinky, but at that point, just use some dead frozen fish or yabbies or something.
I've caught some hideously large eels and catfish on these rigs with stinky bluebait/pilchards hooked on.

Honestly the main thing that distinguishes a carolina rig is the offset hook which helps avoid catching weeds when you rig a plastic, and the bullet sinker which should help bounce off obstacles and not get snagged. And ofc the actual plastic being unweighted directly, helping it present higher than your leading sinker. Otherwise you'd have a similar action to using a jighead.
>>
>>2880320
Sounds like the start of a good adventure, laddie. Post pics
>>
>>2880327
Also, whilst you can use a shock leader like that image shows, it's kind of pointless most of the time, and behind the sinker is just my main line. The simple shit is usually the shit that just works and you don't have to fuck around too much with imo
>>
>>2880314
Here's a good video for how I use stinger hooks. You'll find that smaller hook will help catch the cheeky little shit that decides to nibble your bigger bait and avoid the larger hook

Theyre not as long as they look in the picture, theyre only about 1/16 of an inch longer than the nail bed
>>
>>2880505
only go baitcaster if you want the challenge of learning something new, and are casting weights over 1/2oz.
>>
>>2880505
Spinning rod is more versatile
>>
>>2880507
I dont mind learning but most of the casting weights, crankbaits etc I have are very lightweight so I guess spinning is gonna be a better pick then

A spinner would be better for the lighter stuff, need a fancy caster for those. I found out the hard way, kek.

Check your lure weights and pick your rod to match, around 7 or 8 foot depending.

+1 for 7 foot thats the rod length i own the most of

Work buddy gave me a little frog lure, had to work it around a lot more than the weightless Texas rig I've been using to get a single bite. Probably would have helped if I looked up the proper way to reel it in though lol. First catch on top water regardless.
>>
>>2880511
you need specialized baitcasters to throw things on the lighter side or you will have a horrendous experience. you can get away with throwing 3/8oz and even 1/4oz on SOME 80 sized standard baitcasters, but only if you're running abnormally light line and even then your distance is bad because it needs to be overbraked.

>had to work it around a lot more than the weightless Texas rig
I don't know what this means.
>Probably would have helped if I looked up the proper way to reel it in though lol.
On popping frogs or just normal frogs, you jerk the tip ti make the frog hop or pop, and then, you reel the slack. On frogs with kicking legs, you generally just straight retrieve them, but you can change it up by jerking them.

I was trying to say using a topwater lure was a lot more involved than just slowly dragging a worm on the bottom, also yeah I'm only now realizing the difference between the two types of frogs, I thought it looked weird trying to pop the one I was using as opposed to just kinda swimming it back and forth. Most of my knowledge comes from youtube videos so there's a lot of stuff I miss.

Looks good. Challenge mode is a double albright mono to braid that slides through rod guides cleanly

Nice running into a fellow med angler here :^)

They're members of the same family.
It's a two-banded seabream.

Very nice m8, I'd imagine they're similarly just as tasty. Hoping for some yellowfin bream tonight off the pier

Almost, cantabrian coast.
Also, has anyone tried salting bait shrimp, either for convenience to carry it around or a firmer texture?
>>
>>2880570
heard about salting shrimp but never tried it myself. just put big coarse salt in a bag with cut bait size shrimp
>>
>>2880588
>>2880570
i've seen people marinate baitfish like sardines and such
>>
dumb question but am I meant to tie fluo wire to my braided line (spinning rod) or can I just wing it with a full on braided line from start to finish?
>>
>>2880598
depend what you fish
people use a leader because toothy fishes cut lines, fluorocarbon happen to resist abrasion so it's a good leader material
>>
>>2880599
>people use a leader because toothy fishes cut lines
Oh I thought they did it to have a less visible line and bait fishes harder
Honestly I just try to fish whatever my small rivers have since I am still new to fishing
I am just trying all kinds of baits out right now. Mostly crankbaits, inline spinners and Soft Plastic Lures
>>
>>2880600
>Oh I thought they did it to have a less visible line and bait fishes harder
again, that depend and the fish and the lure, some species arn't line shy some others are
also sometimes you have to account for other species than your target one biting
for example i need a big fluoro leader whenever i fish for bit perch with soft plastics because i could get a pike instead
>>
>>2880598
yes, braid needs needs a leader either nylon or fluoro to compensate both its zero elongation and its high visibility in water, that and constantly tying knots on braid is impractical as its too slippery.
>>
>tfw managed to fix the broken off ring on this telescopic spinner rod
>few days of fishing later it now is starting to actually break into pieces on that same part
Goddamnit, I know it was a cheap thing but that sucks, had this thing for a good long while too
>>
>interested in fly fishing
>always goddamn windy in this country
Just fuck my shit up
>>
>>2880570
>cantabrian coast
Holy kino, that's even better since you get both Med and Atlantic species like that wrasse
>has anyone tried salting bait shrimp
I have, it's less of a mess to handle than fresh shrimp but I've had on average better catch rates with fresh.

USA wins team gold and individual gold for the first time ever in the World Fly Fishing Championship.
>>2880621
What country? It probably is far from impossible. In the US, some of the best fly fishing places are known for being extremely windy. There's also Team Mongolia, which is pretty windy, I'd imagine. You can probably do it, anon.
>>
i got an eagle claw featherlight (light) thinking itd be like my eagle claw collapsing (medium) but better for 1/16oz lure and it ended up being worse
so im returning it
but now i have a reel full of 4lb mono with no home what do,,,, maybe something like this instead? i actually quite like how my collapsing feels to fish with i just cant cast anything under 1/8oz very far
>>
i tried a shakespeare micro UL already and didnt like it
>>
>>2880648
Netherlands, reckon that if you say team Mongolia is getting it done that maybe I should just go for it because no way its more windy here than over there
>>
>>2880657
The very first world championship, which appears to be a sham, was won by the Netherlands. Your country has had no other wins since, but Belgium seems to have performed fairly well over the years.
I was in the Netherlands for vacation once, it's not that windy. People fish in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida and other states. Now, that's windy. There's tons of coastal saltwater fly fishing across the world. A beginner's first concern is the wind, but if you put your mind to it, the wind is not that hard to work around.
>>
>>2880661
I just looked it up. Being fairly generous, the Netherlands has a wind speed of 12.5 mph. My state, has a wind speed of 18 mph. Montana is 21 mph. Florida is pretty slow at 14.5. It's probably highly variable, but maybe, those FL anglers are pussies.
Anyway, Montana is a major fly fishing destination, as is Colorado (20 mph), and the winds are much higher there. I know the Dutch are all twinks, but you'll be able to manage.
