Young predator fish are so frigging optimistic. This pike died because he choked a Rapala Original 120 so deep it gilled him, when I gutted him, he had another pike that was just a bit over half his length (19 or 20 inch pike ate a 10.5 or 11 inch pike)

Sold some stuff on eBay last night, placed a big fly tying order this morning, and went fishing this afternoon. It rained all day, so that water seemed high and was chocolate milk. What was odd, though, was that there were risers in the middle of a downpour. I caught several stocker bows and one wild brown. It felt pretty good.

Went fishing this afternoon. I wish I wasn't as slow and low energy as I am so that I'd have more time on the water. Anyway, I got skunked. First, I was fishing a very low section. Big mistake this time of year, no fish. Then, I went super far upstream into another state even, and I saw very few fish. I moved one, but that was it. In total, I saw 3 fish.

I don't live on the fucking coast these aren't a thing around here. I'll bring some garden gloves or some shit next time, but typically fish around here don't get above 10lbs unless it's fall salmon. This bridge had some monsters under it though, 3 catches all 3 over 10lbs and two over 20lbs within an hour.

Never had this experience before either.

If you're fishing for big fish off a bridge, you use a drop net. Simple as. It doesn't matter if you're fishing freshwater or saltwater.
>>

First guy I ever saw using a drop net was fishing a powerhouse spillway in Nebraska. Mail order exists.

any northern fellas here getting ready for ice fishing?

I have a yamaha atv that I use to pull a small homemade 8x4 ice house on winch down wheels, it's very lightweight so I can get out there pretty early and its big enough to sleep in so that's all I need. For very early ice I have one of those sled pop out ice houses which is nice

Hypothetical

For whatever reason, you can only have one rod/reel combo for the rest of ever, only able to replace it if something breaks

Whats your one true setup?

Im heavily torn between a 7 foot medium light spinning rod with a 3000 size reel and a 7 weight medium fast fly rod, so must further ponder.
>>
>>2883116
8ft heavy with a 6000 sized reel
>can use it for pier fishing (most of what I do)
>can use it for surf fishing
>can use it for fishing from a boat
>can even use it in freshwater for throwing glidebaits
>>
>>2883117
About right for me as well.

>you can only have one rod/reel combo for the rest of ever
i have a bamboo rod that belonged to my great grandpa, i don't use it anymore because i don't trust too much the ligature, it's not relaminated just plain bamboo, about 4meter three pieces, it can throw any lure from 3gram spinners to 100gram hard lures just as well so it's kind of nice, he used it for carp
paired with picrel, because it got a stupidly strong drag for it's size, this one is my spare part donor, the other is on the disassembled tray waiting it's turn for a full renovation
>>
Parks and rec or a very dedicated mexican cut down 3 trees that block overhead casting at my favorite place to fish. They downed them in the river, and now it's absolutely fucked my best fishing spot. I'm actually kind of mad? They were the only thing keeping that bank from eroding, too, I don't know what they were thinking.
>>
>>2883116
I put it up to a coin yoss, and RNGesys proclaimed spinfaggery, and so my ine rod would be a 7 foot medium spinning rod with 20lb braid and a 2500 or 3000 size reel. The only reason im not a little upset at the loss of the fly rod is that i can use the spinning rod to jig bigger ice fishing lures (spoons, lipless crank baits, hyperglides, etc) in the winter where if i chose the fly rod hard water would be basically off the table
>>
>>2883116
6’6” MH 4 piece, spinning, size 3500 reel.

It would be kind of boring on panfish and small stream trout, but I’m too much of a pike and laker enjoyer to got any lighter than this.
>>
Anyone have expensive tackle or is this cheap combo general?
>>
>>2883145
There are people doing things like big swim baits and Loomis or Evergreen rods, but most people spend less. Most of my rods are St. Croix and my “expensive” lures are Rapala, personally.

Also, here's a protip. Buy tackle from digitaka and wait for shimano to intruduce a new lineup so you can get the previous years models on clearence. The same twin power 6000 that I paid 300 something bucks for costs over 600 if I bought it in the US. The savings are kind of deminished with the tarriff bullshit now but it's still a good deal and as long as you buy a model that's exactly the same model number as a US model you can easily get the spare parts.

also, here's protip. buy cheapo beatup decades old reels off ebay or similar and fix them up
will cost a lot less and reel in line just as fine

Anyone got side scanning sonar?

It looks like it’s almost cheating you can see all the fish around you

I kind of want it for ice fishing, auger a hole, spin the sonar to find where the fish are then walk over and put your hope right above them

Too bad they are like $3k but I am tempted anyways
>>
>>2883193
If you specifically want it just for ice fishing a forward facing sonar will work better, itll actually tell you how far away the fish are and be easier to read "Oh there's a school of fish 80 feet that way let's go"

Cool!
>>
>>2883145
All my reels are $250-$450
>>
>>2883485
Yet I outfish you with my 30 dollar combo why is that?
>>
>>2883486
Lmao, and why do you think that you cringy poorfag?
>>
>>2883486
NTA, but how do I know that you aren't baiting? How do I know you are outfishing me? Let's just say you are catching fish pretty good in the same place and at the same time as me. How do I know you're having as much fun as me with that grindy reel?
>>
Why does having decent gear set off so many people here?
>>
>>2883493
i think a lot of people don't want fishing as a whole to become pretentious asshole central like fly fishing where every piece of gear is overpriced because retards fall for it
and in all fairness, expensive reels don't catch fish better, it's just more comfortable
in the end tackle are tools, not a luxury item
>>
>>2883495
Not really, the cheap reels I have owned didn't last in the salt. I've destroyed several cheaper reels over the years even with fresh water rinses and maintenance. I've had the gears completely destroyed on a low end penn. Also many cheap reels have shitty drag which will cost you fish. I've lost good amber jack due to stuttering trash ass drag. All of my shimanos have held up well and the most I've had to do was swap one bad line rollers.
>>
>>2883495
>all fairness, expensive reels don't catch fish better, it's just more comfortable
This only applies to people fishing for species that don't actually fight hard like LMB or panfish.
>>
>>2883496
i don't remember ever suffering stuttering drag, even on my old reels with with carboard and felt washers, drag was probably too tight
>>2883498
would you consider carp and catfish something that don't fight back?
>>
>>2883498
You can catch marlin and tuna on $80 reels. They won’t last as long as the $600-$1000 reels, but if you have offshore money, you’ll be able to upgrade if you decide to keep after it.
>>
>>2883501
Arn't modern okumas actually very resilient for their low price point, even the saltwater ones?
>>
>>2883506
Yeah, but since Covid, they are $200, not $50.
>>
>>2882746
So, a woman with an attractive body causing a lot of pain and even death to sentient beings... that's not sexy. The concept is polluted.
>>
snagged me favorite lure in 10+ft of water with only 4lb line. it would cost me $30 to replace it because it was a limited run color. I'm fuming.
>>
>>2883509
they still have reels in the $50 price range tho
>>
All anyone needs is either a mid range modern reel or a vintage reel that was built to last.
Anything cheaper will either suck to fish with or not last and anything extremely high end outside of special conditions is a total waste.
These special conditions being people catching seriously big fish offshore, shark fishermen or northeast striper fisherman that fish while in the water and would benefit from a fully sealed real like a van staal.
>>
>>2883522
i've got some low end okuma, an alaris als-30 i got for 40 euros and a baitfeeder abf-40 i got for 60 euros, i got cheap reels i wouldn't mind being thrown without too much care in my travel bag and i've been pleasantly surprised how well they perform, and so far still good as new
now i can't say about salt damages since i used them for freshwater but still
>>
I've had a shimano sienna 2500 and nasci 3000, but the cheap $35 sienna has seen a lot more use and abuse in saltwater, thrown around rocks and sand and it is still smooth as it can be after 5 years.
>>
>>2883531
I just got a sienna 4000. it feels pretty good for the price and claims 19 pounds of drag
>>
>>2883531
My sienna 2500 didn't last, it started making a clicking sound like it broke a tooth in the gear after one bull red.
>>
>>2883522
People put way too much thought and money into reels when quality rods are far more important when it comes to lures. For the average angler any mid range spinning reel price wise from Daiwa or Shimano should cover most bases
>>
>>2883545
I won't argue with this.
The rod is way more important and that's what most of your money should go to.
>>
>>2883209
Yes. Cheap hooks can bend out, rust quick, break off after a good take, or miss bites from being too dull. Cheap plastics can snap with little give. Cheap plugs don't swim right and are glorified key chains. If you want to go cheap honestly Aliexpress has better quality than temu. It doesn't have deals as good as the latter but so far I've had very few complaints with aliexpress lures. I buy a lot of cheap lures, jigs and terminal tackle from there in bulk because I fish very snaggy structure like jetties and lose 4 to 5 lures on an average session to snags so I'd be burning money if I bring out the rapalas and savage gears every time
>>
>>2883547
That's a lie all soft plastics and hard baits are pretty much the same exact thing you're only paying for the brand name
>>
>>2883548
It really depends what you're referring to because I buy cheap chinese lures from brands like Spinpoler, Mukun, Tsurinoya, Kingdom and Hunthaus and they all work great. But you have to be careful with the unbranded Temu "great deals" shit packs, for example I bought a box of 20 crankbaits of supposedly the same model, the hooks were mismatched cheap garbage that rust out after one cast, and the plugs themselves were pure ass, some of them floated while others sink. You just need to be very selective when going cheap is all I'm saying.

This. I'm always more of a presentation and action will outfish any color. I've never really understood color aside from using more flashy shit for waters with horrible water clarity.
>>
>>2883566
He cute
>>
>lures with good actions are a placebo because they just are
>all soft plastics and hard baits are pretty much the same
This is googan central.

you can catch pike on an unpainted square piece of wood with a hook on it
you can catch pike with a kitchen sponge rigged on a deadbait rig
pikes sometimes eat my carp boilies off the bottom

There's a creek on the way to my cabin (not really) that I've fished once. I hooked into a monster brown and popped it off when it jumped. It was a big football. My boss and I were talking about the creek, which I forgot about, and he was telling me, inadvertently, about some big fish in there. I decided to go there today because of my schedule otherwise. I probably should've gone farther upstream to find the browns, but I caught some big chubs and quite a few rainbows in a short venture. Tomorrow, I'm going to fish some private land I got permission for.
>>
>>2883582
I stopped buying the colors meme when I was night fishing and caught fish back to back on clear lures. Fish hunt either through scent or vibrations, visuals have little to no influence in most instances
>>
>>2883588
Im targeting them and getting bass instead, whats the wacky senko equivalent for pike?
>>

67 KB JPG
>>2883620
>Fish hunt either through scent or vibrations
that depend, ambush predators like pike can rely a lot on eyesight, colors are still a meme tho
noise too is a factor, for giant catfish we have a tool to wack the surface water to bring them in, picrel, the shape bring a bubble in and the specific noise of it mimic large prey diving or something like that
>>2883626
bigger lures maybe? pike are also sensible to sound, maybe one of these soft plastic rig with a spinner in front? or try deadbaiting, i don't think bass would eat deadbait?
>>
I wouldn't say colors are a meme, it's just less important. If the fish are keyed in on a particular baitfish and you're throwing a lure the same color as it you typically get more bites than something that doesn't look like it. I've experienced this before with a buddy throwing a bluegill color rattle trap and I'm throwing a gold one. I caught way more bass than him.
>>
>>2883616
Its always cool when you can get big chubs to chase bog streamers
>>2883620
>Fish hunt either through scent or vibrations
At night, yes. Many fish during the day in decent water quality rely heavily on sight though. That said, lure colour is a meme and the most important things are size, profile, and action.
>>2883626
What are you throwing currently? I usually run big streamers or big inline spinners for pike, depending on if im using gear or fly.

That line works, i use it, it sucks as a mainline solely because its relatively thick and stiff compared to higher end monofilament, but for leaders its great
>>
What's everyone's favorite braided lines? I sufix 832 and diamond gen 3.
>>
>>2883644
I run power pro almost exclusively
>>
>>2883645
I still use power pro on some reels but I like 8 strand braids better, they quieter through the guides and cast further in my experience
>>
jbraid, yozuri or reaction tackle
>>
kastking braid was so bad I took it off my reel and returned it after one trip
>>
>>2883641
Absolutely hate this stuff for a main line. I only use it as cheap backer material when spooling on braid. If you want to use mono for your main line get some berkley trilene or sufix elite.
>>
>>2883654
How was it bad?

I want to take a minute to shame Maxxon, a fly fishing brand. You probably have never heard of them. They make dogshit products. If I bought the Maxxon fly rod I was debating on buying instead of the Echo Lift Kit I ended up with, I probably would be living a very different life. The store I work at sells them. The rep is annoying. I got some free Maxxon nippers a couple years ago. I used them because I dropped my Umpqua nippers, also free, somewhere in my car. The Maxxon nippers don't even cut fluorocarbon. I try to steer everyone away from Maxxon products. I think my store will be phasing them out. Good riddance. It's a shame Fly Fish Food picked them up recently.

A small garage resin glide bait maker was having a big sale and I grabbed one. Looks great for 40 bucks especially when most glide bait makers charge a fortune. I need to test the action and put some fish on it.
>>
>>2883665
The line got fuzzy really fast and I started getting non stop random break offs. I thought I must have a chipped eyelet and nope everything was fine. Spooled up some power pro and never had issues again using the same exact rod.
>>
>>2883668
Thanks for the review. I was never going to get KK braid, but now, I have good reason to stay far, far away.
>>
>>2883669
It could have been a bad batch but I don't care enough to give it a second shot when there are already so many better options on the market.
>>
>>2883665
That seems like something that can be fixed by a few passes on the front of the nippers with a knife sharpening stick
>>
>>2883673
I don't see how. It's not like I can take the nippers apart to sharpen them. But even if I could, this is a brand new product that can't even cut 5X fluoro.

you can also add a splitshot before the leader, were you'd put a weight on a carolina rig

No its specifically "weightless" for my 11 weight, its only hollow beads, wire, and blade with flashabou/bucktail. I tried to make the bucktail part as bushy and wind resistant as possible to try to sort of weight balance it a little.

i had been looking at importing an ikejime kit from japan but they're kinda expensive
i was just using an old awl for a while, then pic related became available on us amazon
much larger than you'd need for trout / panfish but i go saltwater sometimes
the spike also folds up into the handle so it's easier to pack and not poking everything
