I'd guess that you think bryan shootmatt is usa's most popular millennial documentary photography catlic, and that he's just better than other photographers.
>>
Seems to really like bullseye centred shots, otherwise rather glum and weak in narrative. You see at lot of this sort of stuff at regional modern galleries - People shooting mildly interesting local shit. I guess hes alright.

Says the guy who does herpaderp! Yes, says the guy who does herpaderp.
>>
>>4458009
>>4458009
Why does he look so uptight?
>>4458016
Best one so far
>>
>>4458027
i've seen this one a few times. striking. i love it.
>>4458030
also dig this one heavy.

Lol these are just random places in Arizona and New Mexico. They're okay shots but is this really what gets acclaim?
>>
>>4458071
What kind of pictures would you like to gef acclaim?
>>
>>4458071
>Lol these are just random
No. These are the shots from his photo books and commission work. I posted them at random.

>places in Arizona and New Mexico
I am not sure but most of his work is shot in Texas

What's up with this genre and why is it so popular?

I can see the compositional side of it but I find this sort of photography very boring and too tight(in a bad way). Photographers like Chris Kilip mogs this out of the water.
>>
Cool photos but I think the the portraits are either too staged or too easy in the sense that BWs of bearded homeless men automatically evoke emotions. "Duuude we just like walk by them and don't see them maaaan, look into their eyes"
Even some faggot in my city had an exhibition in a coffeehouse showing BWs of the local homeless men.
I saw one of them masturbating in public once and the other was part of a Gypsy beggar mafia, but those sad eyes maaaaan.

Anyways:
>>4458018
Love it
>>4458022
Cool if not staged
>>4458023
Nice
>>4458026
Great
>>4458027
Great if he found the guy like this

KEK

He did a photobook on Hitchhikers. These >>4458027 >>4458028 >>4458029 >>4458030 are from that project.

Bro I saw you at a gay bar in Austin.
>>
>>4458010
How do you set up a shot like that and then front focus. And then don't even retake.
>>
>>4458158
I thibk he shoots 4x5
>>
>>4458077
Most people can't afford to go interesting places so they take pictures of mildly interesting local shit.
As for bullseye, rule of turds is for hacks who just do what they read in some intro to photography book.

You mean where dozens of boomers gather around to take the same shot?

>As for bullseye, rule of turds is for hacks who just do what they read in some intro to photography book.
You talk as if this is easy. In case of portraiture asking a stranger to pose for you then going for "bullseye" is extremely hard.
>>
>>4458174
Looks like shit now.
>>
>>4458174
what are you referring to?
>>
>>4458184
he straightened the horizon like an autist and killed the sovl which arise out of "mistakes"

>>4458076
Ones that actually capture what a place is like. These are pictures are a retread of the past, what the southwest used to be with nothing to say about it beyond it's decay. little value beyond aesthetic appeal which is a cardinal sin of "documentary photography". They are decent unchallenging pictures which is probably why they are popular. A good documentary photographer would actually document a specific subject. Not the vague idea of what Arizona/New Mexico/Texas was. If this was you posting these Bryan I am not trying to attack. Just honest critique about what would be better for actual documenting.
>>
>>4458208
>A good documentary photographer would actually document a specific subject.
In his first project >>4458015 he documented a forgotten mining town. In his second project he documented a rowdy dude named Chris >>4458023 last days of freedom before he went to jail. In his third project >>4458027 he documented hitchhikers in the backdrop of west and american roads.

>>4458216
None of that is conveyed through these photos. These could be anywhere and convey no sense of character or individual. They are essentially pretty pictures.

>>
>>4462056
i have seen you at a gay bar in dallas

>>4462058
kill yourself city slicker. american mining towns have been raped by city slicker policies. their communities have been ruined and abandoned. this is reality. the fact that you think that this photos are demoralizing shows that you know fuck all of about these people.

recent photo threads occasionally have few good shots but anons get stuck there in the noobs with spark level and eventually give up or get brainwashed by gearfags because there are no mentors on /p/. most of the knowledgeable oldfags left years ago. last batch left after covid
>>
>>4462060
Mining towns get raped by the nature of the mining industry, especially foreign owned mining corporations.

Documentary isn't great art btw, it's documentary. You should have made it truly about that and juxtapositioned portraits of the pertinent mining execs (who were most likely dutch or j[USER WAS DEPORTED FOR THIS POST])
>>
>>4462079
so...you're gay?
>>
>>4458015
If you look this town up online and see generic pictures of it you can see how skillfully he framed this shot. Amazing work.
>>
>>4462104
You mean you can see how easily photography can lie one way or the other
>>
>>4462105
His framing is spectacular. It really creates the illusion of a desolate third world shithole. It seems like that was his intent and he achieved his goal remarkably well.
>>
None of these do anything for me and I've shot quite a few mining towns, Helper UT was my favroite and Dorothea Lange spent some time there and shot the coal miners. Good pizza joint there too, Helper Brewery.

You all do owe it to yourselves to spend some time in the desert Southwest, not the blue liberal parts which are just California with cheaper gas, I mean run the 395 out of California to 95 through Tonopah and all of these little mining towns it's an experience. Pick up 93 and run it to Ely and do the train museum, then up to Wendover UT and do the air museum.

There is so much history and cool shit out there city slickers have no fucking clue. Leave your libtard Communist sanctuary cities and go see real America.
>>
>>4462110
Why don't they do anything for you? Do you have an example of what gets you going?

What a Cunt.
Fuck off you cunting dickbag.
His work is just fine, he’s probably a sweet dude.
Actually fuck that, you have to be a complete asshole to succeed in this culture. I guarantee it wouldn’t take more than five minutes to find a fucktruckload of people who hate him from having to work with him, just like everyone else.

I like bryan, but I wish he would smile more.
