Why are photography YouTubers so shit? They mostly churn out boring nontent while dressing like a copy of a copy of a copy of someone who thought he might closet cosplay Ansel Adams. Who are they aping?
Almost all have the cadence and tone of a best buy sales associate either slowly conniving a golden HDMI cable sale or postponing their suicide on a Sunday evening only since their parents are still alive; with no in-between.
I meet smarter and more interesting people IRL at camera club or local stores, so it's not as if this hobby is exclusively for people prescribed Klonopin and SSRIs.
Half of them are just talking head slop direct to camera talking about what gear to buy (micro four nerds)
The ones that do teardowns and repairs of gear are usually fine, but those aren't exactly photo videos at that point.

The only guy that does the "video of taking photos" thing I can stand is Nick LoPresti since he doesn't talk like he's constipated, but lately the lack of constipation has become a problem since he's been diarrhea-shitting up my sub box with low-effort commentary videos sitting in front of a green screen. Idk who he's aping there, 2016 twitch? Don't like it, especially one where he and his wife are politisperging about shit like how "they can't use Google search for inane things because it'll track you" for what feels like several minutes.

Snappiness may be my second favorite even though he looks and talks like a queer (he has kids so I guess he isn't technically). At least he does ridiculous things with cameras that are more interesting than "I walked and took a photo of something and had some ennui about it".

Also, I hate gxAce with a passion, dead horse of a gimmick beaten into dust at this point. 80% of his videos serve no purpose to the modal viewer since they're just a rain-dance to the corporate marketing teams to get them to send him gear. (Also combining sloppy wet deep-throat glazing prose with an aloof tone is uniquely excruciating to listen to.)
>>
Yeah there pretty much all soulless shills for whichever brand is paying them
>>
One thing I always find funny is how much many (pretty much all I see) youtube and social media photo/video people colour grade their stuff.
It's so over the top that it looks like an amateur playing around with presets for the first time. And this is from people who supposedly know what they're doing. There's a general lack of subtlety and "natural" looks.

And don't fucking get me started on all those people holding clip-on / lapel mics instead of using it like it's built to be used. It's literally built to not be handheld you fucking morons.

And the lofi hiphop beats and click sounds every time an image pops up... and the CONSTANT begging for money... and every single fucking video being juuuust above 10 minutes to get that youtube money.
I get that it's a hustle earning a living in any artistic, but I pretty much never click on a video that's 10+ minutes because I know it's made to profit and not to enlighten or whatever you say.
It's been many years now, but pretty much nobody ever just posts a 3 minute video of something cool they discovered or wanted to share. It's purely selling your personality as an influencer (fucking hate that word) and to sell whatever products and affiliate links you're shoving in the viewers face constantly.

I'm just so fucking sick of it all.. It's terrible in the musical instrument world too, which is my main thing, but I somehow think it's worse in the camera world.
>>
>>4463667
It's the modern algorithm.
It's specifically designed to shittify everything.
Talking heads is the absolute worst offense, in my opinion. You try to look up info about some gearz and it's just 11 minutes of some faggot sitting at a desk talking nonsense, without showing off anything - Not even any fucking photos!
>>
>>4463674
WRT color grading I was thinking this when I 4x speed'd through grainydays' video today at like 2 minutes in. I wasn't sure if the footage was just ruined on site by his foid or if the blown-out look was a deliberate artistic choice(outsourced editor trying out LUTs and/or Dehancer?).
My favorite visual faux pas are the standardized "majored in film but not necessarily at a film school" lighting setups for talking head shots and the worse but less soulless "followed a tutorial from someone trying to sell something" lighting. It's scary when you can start to notice how little of their life is actually reasoned through, they're just drifting helplessly from recipe to recipe. Grainydays is not guilty of this at least.
>>
>>4463677
That's why I try, whenever I can, to use natural lighting as much as possible. I also prefer a more natural look to videos, but still without it looking like Tele Mundo or Japanese tv.
Same with photos. It's like people never got over those instagram filters from the mid 2010's. Washed out and hyper coloured at the same time. That look hurts my eyes.
It's so homogeneous too. They're all supposed to be unique creative people, but it's all just the same shit and they talk in this soft "hey friends..." way. I fucking hate when somebody opens a video up with "hey friends"
>>
I used to enjoy Heaton's videos since they're mostly shot on location and show some of the process, but most of the time nothing happens and he spends more and more time gearfagging and rambling about nonsense. Probably another follower of the 10 minute rule, his videos are boring af. Plus he looks more and more like a circlejerking business, less and less like a bloke who just enjoys going alone in nature and taking cool shots.
>>
>>4463674
Lightroom presets won't sell themselves you know.
>>
>>4463667

The key is to recognize that they aren't there to talk about photography: they're there to distract people there to talk about photography long enough to get paid.

Thus ends the lesson.
>>
>>4463667
Bruh just follow real photographers who publish their works. Go to exhibitions, buy photobooks and shit. There are a lot of good photogs on ig. Just follow them. Engage with real stories.

Checkout Alec Soth's channel, yeah I know he is a fag but his channel is good

I enjoy grainydays, and there's nothing you can do about it.

There's a lot of issues with photography youtube
>Photography as a practise is not that interesting to watch and can be hard to film, especially if you're solo. Yes, some people do film street photography walkarounds, but that requires a second person to film, access to a well known / talented photographer and only really works for street photography. Compare this to something like painting, which is way easier to film, and way more interesting to watch (also harder to gearfag)
>As a result, most photography channels are dedicated to gear videos, and the ones that aren't are tutorial videos that only appeal to beginners. So if you're not new to photography, there's not much out there for you. Sure you can always learn more, but at some point it gets hard to find stuff you haven't heard before.
>Unlike other hobbies, but similar to other artistic pursuits, if you spend all of your time talking about equipment and your results suck (snappiness, Tom Carlton), people will just hate you. Tom Carlton for example is always bitching about all the hate he gets, probably because he has about 700 videos that are all identical to picrel.
>>
The only youtuber that I regularly watch is shoot film like a boss, dude is funny and his editing (both videos and photos) don't give me aids.

The rest I have encountered are insufferable beanie wearing faggots
>>
>>4463667
>rain-dance to the corporate marketing teams to get them to send him gear.
If a youtuber does a "review" of a camera that came out recently, simply do not watch them, ever. ALL reviews on youtube are curated by the manufacturer. NO EXCEPTIONS.

t. youtuber.

i will not self identify. but i will say this:
panasonic has told me to walk carefully with the s5iix and walk carelessly with the R6II and A7IV.
nikon has told me to only show successful autofocus acquisitions and that I should not mind when it misses, "because it is probably you not the camera"
sony sent me creative style settings and a lightroom preset to use to review their camera and asked that I do not use defaults
canon asked for the fucking video before i published it. they removed a part where i compared the menu to a sony, removed the part where i said it overheated when the sun hit it and there was something wrong with the firmware, and said "use this".

This is not a larp. This has all happened. If you choose not to believe it, and think companies are honest organizations, your friends, and only have your best interests at heart, well, get fucked.
>>
>>4463797
Here's the recommended settings for sony cameras btw
5 ntrl*
contrast +2
sat -1
sharp +1
AWB keep white, +1b +1m

don't use std, sony basically admits it looks bad
>>
>>4463798
As for the preset it was literally just these
https://alphauniverse.com/resources/lightroom-presets/

Yeah sony knows their default colors suck

>gxAce
Lmao this guy. Cringe level is off the scale with the latest Hassy """review""": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRb0-bjk7lI
>>
My boy Andy Mumford never lets me down
But that's because YouTube isn't his main business and it's just a side channel to funnel people to his photography workshops
>>
I liked or rather I still like Ted Forbes videos about actual photographers but he seems to also only do gear stuff these past years, shame
>>
>>4463797
People buy gear to be happy about it for a bit and move on, not to be mad every single day. Sometimes gearfags and shills forget about it.

> Company made me adverrltise their product.
Oh no, poor you.
>>
>>4463802
I hope that his cerebral palsy or whatever the fuck takes him soon, fuck that little shit
>>
>>4463807

Is this motivated by the cringe ass robot voiceovers or something else? From 10 minutes spent looking at bits and pieces he seems talented to my untrained eye.
>>
>>4463763
I feel a sort of righteous smugness (a not-quite schadenfreude) when I change Basedpenis, Tom Calton, et al clickbait titles to boring product names with DeArrow.
>>
>>4463798
This doesn’t look too bad actually
>>
>>4463808
I get you need to differentiate yourself to stand out, but I just find the whole scifi robot voice hologram thing way over the top in a bad way
>>
>>4463748
Alec Soth, Bryan Birks, and Robbie Maynard are the only photographers I watch on youtube because they aren't really in it for the money and you can tell they enjoy the art of photography
>>
>>4463802
I hate looking at this fags stiff fingers its unsettling
>>
>>4463842
I don't like their style of photography. It is extremely boring, safe and academic. Bryan Birks tries way too hard.

>Why are photography YouTubers so shit?
Because photography IS the pastime, it's a simple hobby that doesn't actually bear that much analysis. You run out of things to say after not long at all.
Everything new is just an update of something old, the only way to get better is to stick a camera in front of something more interesting and not fuck up the settings this time.
All of the equipment has existed forever, and no surprises, by spending more money you get "more optimal" results, but at the same time it's all mature technology and anyone better than a beginner can accomplish whatever they want with even the most basic gear.
The tutorial's over buddy, go play the game.
>>
>>4463674
The mic part is so true like why are you even buying them
>>
>>4464145
I'd say photography is one of the few "artistic" professions that's safe from ai. At least some aspects of the photography industry.
I mean ai can't replace wedding and event photos and stuff like that.
You can use ai denoise and other shit like that, but the actual photographer profession is "safe" for now, so I'd say it's relevant in that sense.

>>4464210
It honestly makes me irrationally irritated when I see it, and it seems like every-fucking-body making videos of any sort are holding them like that now. I hate it so fucking much.
>>
>>4463667
This bitch keeps shooting wide open

She ACCEIDENTALLY stopped down 2 steps in one lens review and they were her best fucking portraits. And then she continues to crap out wide open slop
>>
> Youtuber makes review
> Nice he uploaded the RAWs to dropbox
> soft wide open slop
> FUCKING MISSED FOCUS in 100% of the pics

i'm going insane I hate youtubers with expensive toys way beyond their skill level so much
>>
There's another youtube guy I saw some videos of using some Fuji stuff, but he bought a Leica late last year or in january of this year.
Now all he's done is milk it absolutely dry with stuff like "2 weeks with my leica", "travelling with my leica", "1 month with my leica", "my leica inspired me to travel", "6 months with my leica".
Before that it was the exact same shit, but just with his Fuji stuff.
And he pronounces some word weird. Like the word "strap", he'll say it like "ssshhhhhhtrap", really locking his teeth together and widening his mouth when saying "ssshhhhh"
It's not "ssshhhh" it's just "strap"..

There was also another guy I was looking at some videos doing some menu setting shit, and he kept calling settings "set-ens". This guy was American too. I've never heard anybody saying it like that before. It's like he was trying to mimic English accent, but you'd say "se'ings" trying that. So annoying.
>>
>>4464221
All Leica """influencers""" do this. See how Overgaard and friends shill Leica gear and Leica courses and Leica books only to upload street and travel snapshits as 640px wide jpgs.

Attic darkroom, Courtney Victoria, Steven Tanno, Steve O'Nions are the ones I can stand.
