marsh wren
how does that one dude get so close to these fuckers
>>4468028You need to find a branch right above the water on which they like to stay, observe where they stop. These branches often have birb poop on them. Then get under the cover of a nearby patch of trees/bushes, or in a special tent if you've got the gear. Stay quiet and hidden for a while and you'll get your shot, that's how I took this one. If they spot you they might stop for a split second and fly away directly, in which case you'll need a better concealment.

>>4468041neat i gotta check branches on the peninsula ive been hanging out at. They belted ones around here seem to perch about 20-30 feet up but maybe there are some spots i can find lower

>>4461910Also: >>4468643Could have been better desu but the bird was swaying so much in the wind
I don't do any bird photography, but how do you guys combat these things?
>>4468737you get bit enough and eventually you stop having a histamine reaction. Other than that I have no idea, wetlands in the spring are hell. My partner wants to get head nets but i think theyd fuck with my view too much.
I was out at a beach 5 minutes from where I live doing some tests, and suddenly a woman appeared next to me sneaking around in the reeds. She was packing some big lens and started talking to me about some bird that had been spotted there. I said I did not know anything about that, and then she left soon after.
>>4468779>She was packing some big lens>talking about some birdTrying to get a picture of your pecker
>>4468792Got caught by surprise maybe, I'm often there trying to take pictures of the girls at the beach, but I've never seen anyone else there. I probably acted very nonchalant. Apparently there is a community of birdwatchers here, wonder how they organise, facebook maybe.
>>4468794please tell me you dont actually do this
>>4468737Cool
>>4468336Just spent a couple of hours applying my own advice, the kingfishers kept zooming left and right but stayed away. Of course the moment I removed my camera from the tripod, turned it off and folded my lens, that fucker came on a branch 7 metres away from me, and fucked off as soon as I could get all my stuff ready again. Fucking kingfishers, why do birds ALWAYS come at the worst times and have to show us how much of a bunch of losers we are?
>>4467931holy shit, what is the aperture you used?
do you guys use aperture priority or full manual?
>>4469037wide open cuz the light was going, 6.3 at 600mm>>4469038full manual auto iso. You're gonna push it to what it needs to be later anyways. You wind up fighting for light a lot doing this, birds be up at dawn and dusk. So mentally i just try to think what can i reasonable drop my shutter to safely, is it bright enough to tighten up here to get a better chance of getting deadeye focus. shooting at 500mm on a target the size of a tennis ball your dof is pretty thin even at f8
>>4469038i always use full manual>>4469044>6.3 basedisnt sigmas widest on their 150-600 6.3?
>>4469045when at 600 i mean

i love birds. they are so beautiful.
>>4469705They work hard on their appearance
>>4467818I'm going to this area soon. Any of you bird freaks got any spots?
>>4469919check for mudflats
I don't normally take bird pics.
>>4469919https://ebird.org/hotspots
No idea why it didn't kill the pigeon behind instead of endlessly trying and failing at the sparrows for 10 minutes
I have to get used to slinging around a 5 pound lens and taking shots at 600mm. The AF doesn't work as good anymore.
>>4470127Yeah my arm doesn't enjoy the experience. I've seen some folks use some kind of harness to attach the camera on their chest, lens pointing downwards. It helps relieving the arms for long days of birding.
>>4467818Can anyone ID thiw birb? Saw it in the front yard and ive never seen anything like it before, certainly not a native (south australia). It was very friendly, it sat and chilled with me for a while. This is it from the front. The blue face was so striking to me
>>4470214And this is the back/side profile pic
Is it worth investing in something like a gimbal for steadier handheld shots?
>>4470231I've never tried one but this is missed focus, not motion blur.
>>4470231I suspect that the total weight would make it hardly practical
Any of you capture great blue herons?
>>4470275
>>4470276Look at those feathers

>>4470127>>4470160I monopod
>>4468515so goofy lol
I love these guys so much
>>4470547How's your experience with a monopod? My tripod can dismount into a monopod but I'm skeptical
>>4467818RARITY: CommonTYPE: Rock Pigeon>Fairly large pigeon with wild and feral populations throughout the world.
>>4470678>these eyesWhat kind of drugs do pigeons consume?
>>4470681>Rock PigeonI think I know...
have a ringed turtle dove
>>4470127i sometimes twist the tripod collar around to the left side, then lock the palm of my left hand between it and the barrel of the lens.lets you swing it around comfortable for a long time.left side tripod collar also good for mounting strap cuz it wont block your viewfinder when you need to bring camera to eye fast
>>4470879Good tip but your wrist must hurt like a bitch after a while
I'm gonna need to start doing setups.
>>4470127>I have to get used to slinging around a 5 pound lens and taking shots at 600mm.5 pounds is light
There is always that one twig, isn't there?>>4470643Nice, what is it?
>>4470920I would guess it's a Long-tailed tit
>>4470912i do this because it lets you hold your wrist more straight, so hurts slightly less. i do it with a 180-600 idk if it would work with a big old heavy ass 600 f4 or something
>>4470927I'll definitely try it on my next outing desu
>>4470932I think this could use some processing and become a great pic.
>>4470934Very nice light desu, looks like it was shot under a full moon
dont normally take pictures of dead birds
>>4470941Beautifully morbid... also appropriate filename.
If Canon did another 1.3 crop camera, would you get one?
>>4470957No since all my lenses are for Nikon
>>4470941nice

>>4470933Anything particular you have in mind? I lighten the shadows a good bit to deal with the bird being backlit,m but I guess selective lightening it (and maybe the post too) to further undo the backlight would be an idea. Darken the background, or perhaps a bit of an added vignetting?
>mfw I, a rare Pigeon of superb coloration and magnificent stature (that of a majestic African lion), am being photographed by some paparazzi wannabe with dark zoom mounted on his plebeian apsc crop.Harrumph! The insolence!
>>4471153nta but indeed, lightening the shadows further and maybe slightly reducing the exposure and contrast of the background. Here's a quick example, but it could be a bit too much
>>4470932>>4471172this, and straighten it. I would attempt to edit out the thing coming out of its head desu.

Where do you guys post your stuff outside of 4chan?
>>4471380I show them to my mom
>>4471380I show them to my cat

>>4471347its the full shot
I keep getting odd pigeons in my yard
>>4471436thats a thing?
>>4471431Really like the attitude here
With this thread being so slow, why not just a /wildlife/ general?
>>4471851It's one of the fastest thread on the board after /rpt/ and /gear/
>>4471852grim
>>4471854Goes to show that gearfags are somewhat succesfully contained
>>4471851I'd actually appreciate if it became a more generic wildlife thread, since lots of the gear and techniques overlap so it's mostly the same thing. It's fine having a niche thread on a slow board, I just think there'd be more to post. I guess /rpt/ gets the leftover wildlife stuff.
>>4471860Yes but birds, anon. BIRDS.
>>4471861okay thenThese wild lorikeets were trying to break the budgie I was pet sitting out of its cage, with a couple of semi-successful attempts. I had half a mind to just let it happen because I personally don't like caging birds.
>>4471864Jokes aside I would also like having a more general fauna thread, but I'm pretty sure it'd still be dominated by birds
these guys always bully me when I try to find birds
>>4471876Here they're fearful as fuck, they run away the second they spot someone. The hunting season doesn't help either, these fuckers with their rifles make watching wildlife difficult and dangerous
I always struggle with these little fellas>>4471738One of the only safety spaces as a white man. Bird hides(slowly being invaded by women with OM1s though) and the village hall birding meet ups where we show photos, discuss local counts and drink yorkshire tea
>>4471879one jumped in front of my car today out of nowhere, like 5 meters away. at least it was on a tiny road going 30km/h so he didn't need to die yet.moose are very active also, and I saw four in total last week while driving, one relatively close call.
>>4471901>mooseI'm glad we don't have them in western Europe, they look dangerous as fuck. We still have quite a lot of boars and deers which can be lethal for cars. I'm lucky since the worst I've encoutered so far was coming close to hitting a deer and a badger. But then again I haven't been living in the countryside for a very long time. Still hit a young robin this summer, that made me sad.
>>4471903What kind of a monster doesn't want to enjoy the presence of moose in his country?
>>4471903yeah, you can badly injure yourself or even die when crashing with one. they're so tall and heavy that they can come through the windshield to your lap. absolutely gorgeous animals though.deers very rarely cause injuries, so I'm not too worried about them.
>>4471916I'd enjoy the sight but Québécois have made me very wary of them
>>4471860>>4471851>>4471868this gets discussed every year or so, we've never made it happen. I would be in favor, i shoot whatevers around, theres just mostly birds.

>>4471733Figured it out, there was a wedding nearby a week or two ago and they were probably released at that
>>4472057>our wedding will feature some light ecoterrorism
>>4472060I think I found the service they used too, which is spouting this bullshit. I know it's probably useless but I think I'll report it to the local council.
>>4471918It's really easy to forget how fucking big moose are when you don't have them in your country
>>4471901>5 meters>30 km/hHow much is that in civilized units?

>>4472473lol why are you bothered by some pretty pigeons on your roof?>>4472159nice eye contact and nice background colors too

>>4472060Wait until you hear what people do with chickens.
>>4472603I'm not sure I get your point
>>4472501>>4472534I mainly don't like them because I usually get a lot of really cool native birds in my yard but now I'm seeing more and more feral pigeons and less of the native birds I like.

Is this much bokeh desired in birding? It doesn’t appeal to me. I understand bokeh helps isolate the subject but in nature photography do you not want the surrounding environment as well?I feel like when I’ve looked at NatGeo and BBC photography, it’s typically lacking bokeh. Everything around the subject is in clear focus.
>>4472878lord no, its an unfortunate side effect of shooting crazy focal lengths on tiny subjects like 3 meters away. I honestly miss my apsc setup cuz of this, but there will never be another camera like the d500. Being able to get at least an entire eye in focus is nice
theres an entirely separate group of people obsessed with the terns here at the sandpiper marina. I can't really tell terns apart.
>>4472878I take a cheap telephoto zoom on my crop sensor when I go hiking... the equivalent aperture is extreme, but when I can actually get close to the subject and the bg isn't too busy I do like the results and the context it provides, for example the burn markings on this shot (sorry not a birb). That said sandpiperfriend's shots are tasteful compared to a lot of shit I see, you can absolutely buy your way out of taking shots that require forethought about what's in the bg.
Met this cool bird the other day
>>4472949They're sauropsidae after all
Magpie with a mole cricketThis fella's my hero, I fucking hate mole crickets. Noisy little faggots ruin summer evenings with their non-stop shrill screeching.
