Has anyone done this? Any tips?
Keep your hands and feet inside the vehicle at all times.
Yes, I went on a safari to Kenya years ago. For me, it was a once in a lifetime experience.Take at least one long lens (300mm plus), extra camera batteries and memory cards (and a strong sunscreen). It's usually very bright, so you'll find that even with a long lens you'll get a good shutter speed (it might even be worth picking up a cheap bridge camera). Also, listen to your guides and don't wander off (my first night in camp a large lion strolled through roaring all the way and later the van I was in almost got trampled by an elephant). And if you see any Maasai, don't take their photo unless they say it's OK. Budget for extras (like balloon rides) and bring something like Imodium for any food emergencies. It's been a long while (and I was only there a few weeks) but if you have any questions, I'll try to answer them.
>>4468463Thanks for the tips! Everyone recommends two bodies, one with something 400mm+ and one that's wider in case the animals are a lot closer. I'm conflicted between a 100-400mm on 4.5-5.6 full frame and a 180-600mm 5.6-6.3 for my main lens. What would be your loadout if you had to do it all over again? Also, how many days is good for the Mara? They jacked up park fees to $200/day in high season and $100/day in low season so that's a factor too
>>4468527 Yep, safaris are expensive! If I had to do it again, maybe a 28–70 and the 180–600 mm you mentioned. Because you're using full frame and I guess plenty of megapixels, you could always crop in a little at 70mm if you had to (and use 28mm or so for the landscape photos). You might want to think about a little pocket camera with a flash as well — useful at night around the camp (or lodge etc.). Also, a good pair of sunglasses and some small binoculars (just looking and being at the moment is important as well). As for how many days, that's a tricky question. The guides will know all the best places for the animals, and you could see all the 'main' ones in a few long days, but there's so much more to see. If you're going all that way, it seems a shame to rush. So my (slightly vague) answer is as many days as you can comfortably afford.
>>4468555Nice, thanks again for the advice. My dream is to get some true portrait shots in the 28-70 range if the opportunity presents itself - but will probably end up shooting 95% with the long lens as many seem to report. Leaning towards 5 days in the Mara, and 4 each in Tsavo East and Amboseli. Total time in country 3 weeks. Will try to keep total cost under $6k or so
>>4468463>And if you see any Maasai, don't take their photoWhat are they going to do, spear me?
Make sure you bless the rains
>>4468653hows the pussy situation there? do the guides show u where the clean whores are or do u have to just jerk off each night?
>>4468386squirrel girl in africa rn. but she has her spanish boyfriend with her. so you'd need to get rid off him somehow to get to her.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiOOYyU90cg
>>4468596Have fun (I'm a little jealous). The price sounds about right. When I went years ago, it was thousands of pounds, but it's certainly well worth it.
