Do you print your photos, anon?
>>
Yes hand made prints either cyanotype, anthotupe or gelatin.
>>
>>4472235
Why would I
>>
>>4472235
Absolut. Local printing place is cheap so I can fill out entire albums for dollars if I feel like it. Really though, it's just nice to frame decent photos and either gift them or hang on my walls. Even if I don't live up to the standards of /p/, I can still cover a wall or two in nice looking photos I made myself.
>>4472258
These always looked neat, but I can't imagine a scenario where I'd rather not fill a bigger space up with multiple frames versus having one frame cycle through shots. Also as an IT guy the only networked device is my house is a printer and I keep a loaded gun next to it just in case.

I got a canon selphy 1500 recently and it's been very fun having a way to print 4 by 6 on demand. I also print my best photos of the year every December as a little reward/rtual for myself. Plus I always toss a couple family shots in the December print order to give to the grandparents/parents for Christmas. It always brings some happiness.
>>
No, my publisher does.
>>
>>4477322
you do not have a publisher :)

What's a good printer for at-home photo printing? Ideally one that would double up as an efficient every day printer for documents etc. And is it the Epsom ET-8550 like this boomer claims? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BP5-DDvmhY8
>>
>>4477358
yeah that would be a good choice if you want larger than 8x10. But I went with color laser + photo printer and would recommend that path if you can. The ecotanks are a decent compromise but inkjet quality on plain paper isn't that good. I don't think it does full duplex either and if you want autistic longevity, you need a pigment printer. There are pigment kits you can get for the ecotanks though but it's still CMYK compared to the extra colors you get with a photo printer. The boomer has done comparisons and the difference isn't that big between the two.
>>
>>4472235
Yea. I have three 5 x 7 frames above my TV that I use as a little gallery I switch up everyone once in a while.
Question I have, if you're into photography why wouldn't you print photos?
>>
>>4477378
>you need a pigment printer.
I thought in the video he said it has both pigment and dyes? Unless by
>I don't think it does full duplex either
you meant it doesn't do pigments super well or something to that effect?
>But I went with color laser + photo printer and would recommend that path if you can.
Is there a specific photo printer you'd recommend, what are the budgety options to start looking at?

One other issue I'm noticing with the ET-8550 is I'm not seeing CUPS drivers for Linux for it, at least not in the official list.
>>
my grandparents had an old printer they gave me still in the box but I dont print much cause my pics suck and I dont wanna wast the only ink cartrige I got.
>>

the ecotank printers use dye ink which is the typical inkjet ink. The high end photo printers use pigment but the Epson can be converted to use pigment although you need to flush the lines (best to start with a new printer if going that route). Duplex meaning printing double sided automatically which for documents is imo a must-have. You can manual duplex for double sided printing which I used to do but for lasers duplex doesn't cost that much more.

The photo printer I am using is the newer version of OP, the Pro 1100. It would be worth it only if you want large prints (16x20) otherwise the Pro 300 is pretty good. Dye based and it uses extra inks for better color. The inks are also premium inks for longevity. I'm biased toward Canon since they will waste a ton of expensive ink to make sure they never clog whereas you have to make sure you print weekly with the Epsons or else they might clog. The Pro-1000 and 1100 will dump $300 of ink a year minimum just for declogging but you have peace of mind. Dye based inkjets are less susceptible to clogging but it's still a possibility.

Cheap route would be an older Brother black and white full duplex laser for normal documents and an Ecotank for photo. Laser document quality is so much better than inkjet which is why I recommend against having an inkjet as your every day. Or, you could just get the laser and have a lab print your photos. Honestly lab printing is the cheapest option in the long run but being able to mess around with settings and get quick feedback on 4x6s before doing a large print is super nice. If you can find a deal on a color laser, that could be worth it - none of them are really photo quality but for documents, it is an endgame printer and the photos from mine (Canon 753cdw) on something like HP Premium 32 paper are pretty close to a cheap inkjet. I also like the Canon Selphy 1500 dye-sub. It only does 4x6s but never clogs and the quality is great.

Gotta print or it'll clog
>>
>>4477492
meant to say that the Pro 200 is the dye based printer. The Pro 300 is the pigment based version. Both do 13x19. The key with inkjets is to buy photo paper - and really you should be using the manufacturer paper although if you tinker, there are other good photo papers but without the longevity guarantees - because inkjet prints look like ass on regular paper and sometimes misbehave without a correct profile for non manufacturer paper.
>>
>>4477326
I have several actually, but I can't prove it without doxxing myself, so if you don't want to take my word for it that is up to you.
>>
>>4477492
How much of an issue is clogging? Does it kill the printer, or just require some extra steps to return to working condition? I'm looking at a used ecotank, it's listed super cheap, but apparently has been lying around unused for a long time. So wondering if it's a lost cause, or worth the risk to try and fix up.
>>
>>4477536
Depends on the printer. Anon's Lexmark has its printing heads in the cartridge so if it clogs he'll "only" need a new cartridge. But they're kinda expensive. Epsons usually have the header as part of the printer itself. Canons I think it was on the cartridge like Lexmark and HP. You can unclog and refill the cartridges but your mileage might vary with third party inks. The time I tried it, the magenta wasn't close enough so reds looked orangeish. But the friend I did it for had bought the absolute cheapest inks available.
>>
>>4477514
you have zero publishers. :)
>>
>>4477536
Ymmv, at minimum it's a cartridge change but it's more likely a manual service which likely involves brushing the dried ink out of the jets and maybe even the tubing. Normally it's just the jets themselves. Not a hard task per se but a royal annoyance if you just wanted to print something and now you're servicing your printer instead.

>>4477591
Pathetic bait. Try harder.

Meh, if we're talking about a one time thing to bring a used printer back to life, at a fraction of the price, wouldn't really call that a big deal. I'm just concerned about:
- probability that the printer will be salvageable
- probability that I'll be able to fix it without prior experience
Sounds like both are likely from what you're saying.
>>
i used to but all the places to do it shut down
but i moved and the walmarts here have printers so maybe ill try again

Basically what these guys said

Sometimes you can run the cleaning cycle to unclog and do alcohol swabbing if that doesn't fix it. The Lexmark manual says to wet a lint free cloth with water and swipe the print heads with it and then run the cleaning cycle. This doesn't always work from my experience with inkjets which is why I like the printers with heads built in the cartridges from a maintenance perspective.

You can also buy high quality inks like Lucia or Claria etc to refill but I would not recommend it. Just get a new cartridge, allegedly OEM for $16 on Amazon so not expensive imo although that's an old printer so the third party stuff might be better simply by being newer. Tank printers, like the Ecotank, and as cANON pointed out, most Epson printers, have separate heads but they aren't user-replaceable so if it gets really clogged you gotta buy a new printer. My Canon does have a replaceable print head but it's more than half the cost of the printer.

>>4477613
Think of printing every week or maybe even every two weeks as part of the maintenance schedule. You can bring it back to life with a new cartridge fairly cheaply, less than $20, but might as well get your money's worth from the ink you have even if you think a photo isn't worth printing - you can still learn "hmm, this photo doesn't look good in this dim room, maybe I'll mess with curves to brighten it" or "the shadows have a color cast that isn't visible on the computer, let me fix that" etc. You have photo paper for that Lexmark I'm assuming.

The used Ecotank I would ask for a sample print to make sure it isn't clogged and pass if it is just because you can't guarantee that cleaning the print heads / doing a cleaning cycle will fix it but could be a great bargain if it is working. You could gamble on being able to fix it if the price is good enough and the seller won't let you try.

i'm too poor to afford one at the moment

fuck no
