Still photog is some of the hardest to master and I feel like it’s usually either gorgeous or garbage with no in-between.

There’s something about it that is very hard to get right.

Here. Is my latest one. Still very much a beginner at these. >>4475660

I think yours are good, but I also think that the branded bottles take away rather than add. It's like a corona advertisement. Keep it up!

Not sure how much this qualifies as still life, I think my composition could have used some work here, but I like the colours and textures. I would like to try taking pictures of firearms in a studio with more controlled lighting but it's not really feasible for long guns. I'm going to try it with handguns though, I could do with recommendations for lights which aren't super expensive.

This photo looks slightly fogged? the second you posted is much more contasty and you can see texture/shape much better. >>4475732 is nice. Were you using a mist filter of some kind?

>This photo looks slightly fogged?
might be. I have some issues with the daylight dev tank from lomo. I can't seem to always be able to load the whole film and if I cut and reload some frames may get fogged.
>Were you using a mist filter of some kind?
Indeed I have. I kind of like the look with some diffusion.
>I could do with recommendations for lights which aren't super expensive.
I wish I could help you more here, but I use only one cheap desk lamp as a light source. I've seen other anons around here who know their stuff. maybe they'll drop by and give some proper pointers.

You can get inexpensive and powerful LED lights for pretty cheap 150 or less. I use a godox 200W for my stuff. It works pretty well. Super bright, which is important for what I do.

What's the strength on the mist filter? I was looking at getting one for portrait work and I'm split between 1/4 and 1/8. Can't decide if 1/4 is excessive whilst 1/8 doesn't feel like it does enough.
>>4476474
Sounds a lot better than the torch I've been using so far. Picrel is terrible regardless (I was fucking around with a Zeiss Ikonta and it doesnt focus close enough) but the lack of light does it no favors.
>>
>>4476481
NTA.
1/8 is weak and subtle. It's difficult to find differences over a normal UV filter unless you're shooting brilliant points of light or high contrast scenes, and even then it's still subtle af.
1/4 still isn't strong per se, but tends to strike a happy medium without making things look creamy and low contrast.
But, the only mist filter I use nowadays is my 1/2 strength because I like that strong look, and if I'm not getting that obvious and deliberate low contrast look, I may as well take the filters off and shoot for max IQ. That's just how I do it though, 1/4 may be better for you.
>>
>>4476481
>>4476484
I have both 1/8 and 1/4, but I seem to use the 1/4 more. I didn't really think about it too much when I took the pictures. I just mounted it on the lens and forgot about it.

>Picrel is terrible regardless
don't sweat it anon. I've almost wasted an entire roll of Phoenix with this being the average photo. Harman Phoenix does not have a great exposure latitude. Every shadow is exacerbated until everything becomes a mess.
>>

I would also recommend a c-stand with extension for your light. I have 3 and some super clamp clones that are extremely useful for setting up good light for my still lifes. The neewer ones are not too expensive and are quite strong.

If you have a set of them you can also use them for holding up backdrops, strobes, etc. They're really nice to have if you've got the space.
>>
>>4476481
For example this shot >>4475663 I used one to hold my light pointed at a bounce card held up by another, and then the third one held a piece of cloth directly to the side of my subject. On the opposite side I used a tripod that held another bounce card to lighten up the shadows.
>>
>>4476490
>>4476484
I reckon I'll get 1/4 from that review, thanks anon
>>4476499
Is neewer stuff actually reasonable? I think I was looking at polarising filters from them some time back. Not that I suppose it matters much for holding up bounce cards. Might have to look at something a bit smaller though (no space).
>>
>>4476753
Their c stands do not feel cheap by any means, and with some sandbags have held up quite heavy strobes + light modifiers with no fuss.
No experience with any of their other stuff.
