Had to get clever with this belted kingfisher. It was miles away, taken at 1280mm equivalent. Heavy background and poor lighting.

Regarding your background, bokeh can be fixed in post if it's not smooth enough. The fronds from that palm tree are creating an off grid pattern. If the subject were more isolated—as in, there was more distance between the background and the subject—it would have smoothed out a lot more without needing to do any post work.
