Hey, /p/.

I'm new to this board and I'm looking to buy my first dslr camera. I was wondering if you guys can give a beginner like me some recommendations on what camera to buy. I've heard Canon is the go-to-brand, but I'm not sure what model is the best option.
Camera recommendations that won't make me look like a redditor lesbian would be greatly appreciated.

I've got about $950 to shell out. Thanks.

Stupid / newbie questions go in the stupid question thread. But seeing as this is a dead board whatever.
If you actually want a DSLR that makes gear an easier choice, since some point and shoots, MILCs, and compacts are decent as well, but for DSLRs:
>APS-C vs Full Frame
Full frame sensors will get you cleaner, nicer, richer images but at the expense of cost, weight, size, and brand choice. It depends on what you're willing to lug around; no point buying a nice full frame if it's too inconvenient to ever take anywhere.

>Canon Nikon
The go-to brands. These are your blobmera prosumer and pro tier shit that you can't really go wrong with IF you avoid certain crippled models.
Canon 5DII / III, Nikon D700 / D850 etc. are full frame, and are generally regarded as excellent cameras. The 5DII is my top pick if you're trying to stick to a budget because you get one for like $300 and then use whatever else in your budget for some nice lenses.
APS-C models like the the Canon 70D / 650D are decent choices as well but aren't much smaller. Nikons like the D3000 are even more at fault for being just as much bulk.
>Pentax
APS-C only*, generally great features considering their price-point like weather sealing and excellent ergos / customisation.
A Pentax K30 with a kit lens would cost you like $200 and is feature-rich and comes in lots of funky colours if you're not into everything you own being black
>Snoy
Don't buy a snoy DSLR. They're practically straight rubbish. Maybe if you got an A77 for $200 it wouldn't be a bad deal per-se but I sure as shit wouldn't bother.

*Pentax make a few FF models but I wouldn't bother personally.

something cheap and used
which will probably be some kind of canon or nikon APS-C DSLR, but that’s fine
Pentax APS-C DSLRs are typically more expensive and there’s far fewer options for lenses unless you add full-frame lenses into the mix, which are bigger, heavier and more expensive. Still, they’re decent cameras and if you see one that’s not too expensive it’s worth considering.

so, a canon or nikon body. make your budget about $300 or less, leave yourself some room for a nice prime lens or two or a nice zoom. keep an eye on Facebook Marketplace/Gumtree/Craigslist/eBay for camera bodies. Beware from who you buy lenses, they’re much more fragile than camera bodies. MPB/KEH are good if you’re in the US. Most camera stores have a modest second-hand section, too.

take a look around for “DSLR” cameras on some used websites, sort by lowest price and see what comes up and then come back here with questions.

Nikon D810 and a 50mm 1.8 and still have enough for KFC.

Just get a 5D mark II. Best option full stop. Don't bother with nikon DSLRs the autofocus is total dogshit even with first party lenses.

Fuck you and fuck general shills. Generals will NEVER be chan culture and m00t will never be forgiven for allowing them. I remember when they were against the rules!

D700 is a 12MP piece of shit, and D850 is extremely overpriced.
The good FF Nikon DSLR options are D610, D800, D800e, D810 and D600 if you are willing to risk oil spots on the sensor (very easy to clean).

Tell that to my D2x with AF-D primes.

You seem to be the only one with that opinion.

>D850 is extremely overpriced
Not really. 1600 bucks for a pro level FF DSLR? Not terrible.
>>
>>4481503
>AF-D
slowest and least accurate, there's a reason they ditched inbody focusing motors for the superior in-lens focusing that Canon had to begin with. the coupling for the AF drive shaft limits speed and the tolerance of the coupling causes accuracy loss.
>>
>>4481510
>slowest and least accurate

A fraction slower yes, but more accurate even in low light.

Buy a canon r10 or r50, the kit lens, and a prime lense with a big mm number and a small f number

Be normal. Dont listen to these nerds.
>>
>>4480615
Buy a mirrorless camera, DSLR is obsolete technology and you will be stuck with a dead ecosystem.

Budget is a concern for you so buy a used one.

I will not shill a brand because it's basically a matter of personal preference between the Canikony trinity, don't let brand fags tell you otherwise.
