Black and white is easier because you only have to think about light and composition.
I don't think the west ever really recovered from Vietnam. It pretty much killed dead all the hopefulness of the post-war period, and threw into question the validity of western ideals. The majority of art now is social critique and cautionary tales. The rest is consumer product designed to get people to ignore the former.

You only deal with lighting and composition in black and white (yes colour does matter a bit, but you know what i mean you dildos).
