When are we getting a camera with a cross-shaped sensor or an oversized square sensor with dark corners? This should already be the standard on the tiny smartphone sensors so I don't have to rotate my phone

Sony cameras already have dark corners

Action cameras are doing this for full gate recording that can be cropped either to horizontal or vertical
It's a stupid compromise for still photography, above 20 Mpx you can already comfortably crop an horizontal pic out of a vertical one

Why does everyone hate squares?
>Yields largest possible image field without vignetting for an image sensor of convex shape with only 90deg corners and straight corners allowed
Everything other than 1:1 sacrifices total field of view by necessity. 1:1 has plenty in both directions to crop to landscape or portrait if desired. It's literally perfect and I'm tired of pretending it isn't.

This guy gets it. Give me the square sensor. I'll crop if how I want, if I want.

HE Might be onto something. lens design has baffled sony. watch any xf 18 1.4 review, and then find a comparable sony lens (no ca, retains af) you have 1 hour

If you can't elaborate, then you might as well have said nothing at all.

>squares?

still wastey, just make circular film that covers the entire illumination circle

>Why does everyone hate squares?
it doesn't reach as wide and tall if you want to keep using the same lens and be able to take the same photo as with your current sensor
the purple-marked areas you'd lose

I like 4:3

A few Panasonics did that too

4:3 was nice when I had a 4:3 monitor since you can view in fullscreen and it'll fill the screen completely, no black bars. But 4:3 monitors are basically gone now outside of retro stuff so no point anymore imo.

Just make square lenses
