And this is why you should only ever speak Latin if you're trying to negotiate business in medieval Europe with a time machine.

You would be able to understand 1600s English and they would think you just had a weird dialect. In the 12th century it would be a different language that you could guess some of what they meant.

TASTE THE DIFFERENCE
>>
>>514876665
>preground pepper

might as well pour just dust on your food, all the essential oils are gone now
>>
>>514877207
The flavor of pepper is in the oil located inside of the peppercorn. When ground that oil is exposed and starts to evaporate. It isn't evaporated quickly, mind you, however most pre-ground pepper is too finely ground and has been sitting around long enough that its flavor is noticeably diminished. The same is true for while bean vs pre-ground coffee.

It isn't a massive difference but you will notice the difference in taste and especially the smell if you spend time cooking. If you are someone who smokes (pot, cigarettes, etc) or drinks a lot of sugary drinks, coffee, or alcohol, odds are low you will notice any difference because your sense of taste is diminished.
>>514876665
Long pepper was grown in Europe and honestly has a better flavor. Pepper wasn't the big spice being traded, just a byproduct of all the other stuff. Hell, saffron is still more expensive by weight than literal gold.

0 people were conducting business in Latin in England in 1600. In fact the only business being conducted in latin at that time was...no nothing was being done in the business world in Latin in the 1600s anywhere anon.
Writing? Sure. Education, religion, technically church "business" was conducted in Latin but if they needed a roof fixed they would have contracted it out to guildhall in their local language.
The language of business would have been dependent entirely on the port where you wanted to conduct your business in. London would have been Elizabethan English. The strangest thing about the way you spoke would be your accent but you could theoretically get around that by saying "Oh I'm Portuguese but grew up on trading caravels around the Mediterranean this is just how we speak there. Course that could fail if you're questioned by a trader who speaks Portuguese lol
Anyways TLDR no one conducted "Business" in Latin that was the language of study, theology, and science but not cold hard cash.

With no one to maintain or replicate them they're just going to end up in some King's personal collection. Valuable yes but not world changing and probably not the most valuable thing you could bring on that time machine.
Unironically spices like fresh pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg etc would be more valuable than modern firearms unless you have a plan to reverse engineer the gun you bring, set up a factory (using materials that haven't been invented yet) and mass produce them.
1 AR-15 would be incredible yes, but no one would understand how to use it and it would be sold as a collector's item. 1 pound of fresh pepper everyone on the docks understand what it is, what it's worth, and wants to trade with you.

Germany and Austria are not on the table. Sorry dear customer.

Even the English of the 12th century would be unintelligible to our modern language.
Their french would be closer to modern but still quite different. If you had to go back that far your best bet would unironically be to learn ecclesiastical latin and pose as a church official. IDK how organized the church was back then but if you get found out they'd probably burn you at the stake as well.

I forgot about Portugal. Hm. Does that mean I'm stupid or that, for me, Portugal is just irrelevant. (today).
If you want buy it back then: a clear NO.
Long story short: portugal - "port of the grail". (that's where it's name come from). Uuhm but I can offer big parts of eastern Europe as well as Greek. The back then Greek was a hard work of commissioning. (rule1: everything with "orthodox main religions" are suspicious). Hey come on. Greek has nice beaches, uhm... Food.. That will somehow get more and more in your mouth the longer you chew on it.... Oh and anal is like a handshake for them.

Ah. Yeah I think/or know, depends, some countries back then were, more or less political driven Catholics. Politic driven can also mean "in fear of (...)". (war, economics, civil war, religious split within the existing religious groups, etc. Pp.)
Regarding these aspects some countries back then are worth saving them, others unworthy and ready to trade them. Funny enough, Vatican City was one of the last Catholic states. (as Vatican City counts as an own state) like Luxemburg or Liechtenstein.

It is at least interesting that even though the reformation was largely about reintroducing the vernacular language into worship, that all worship conducted in Oxford and other universities was still in Latin. The prayerbook says that worship should be done in a language "understood by the people", and Latin was still the language of the university. And it wasn't just a written language either, they were arguing and debating fluently and passionately in Latin, hurling insults and slurs so good they had to be forgotten by time. I wish I could see it desu.
