I heard a story of one person making Chief in 4 years by joining as an E3. (probably not legal) None the less, I had plenty of time on balls to 4 watch for study so I nailed the exam and made E-5 right away... pissed the entire dept. off! I wasn't trying that hard to make E-6 because I was burnt out and took commands on things other than grey ships after my first station on a flag command ship. Don't bother with anything other than standard issue destroyers. They'll burn you out every time to keep the deck seamen from feeling picked on.
