>>515157265Okay I will.Data archiving is extremely important
>>515157265Cd-r's are notorious for destroying in less than 20 years.
>>515157265i thought about it and decided that most of the media created in my lifetime should be lost to history
>>515157955>>515157677>>515157421yes, thank you.
>>515157955That's why you have to curate your own collection. In the zombie apocalypse it will be traceable material. The rarer the better obviously
>>515159214*trade
>>515157265should I burn to CD, DVD, blu ray?what about rewriteable?
>>515159214I archive mainly martial arts texts. If SHTF I will probably be one of the only survivors with an English copy of the Bubishi. Really rare stuff is hard to find free PDFs of though.
>>515157955Based. Let it burn
>>515159692DVD and Bluray are types of CDs. The real hardcore archivers use M-Disk (which I think is similar to Blueray, you need a special drive to write them which costs 50$ish for a cheap one). For normalfags though just basic CDs will work.

>>515159834Marge what is this
>>515157421>>515157677>>515159692You should use m-discs, they do not degrade in at least 1000 years. You have DVD m-discs but they need a special DVD m-disc capable writer to write to, or blu-ray. All blu-rays are m-disc capable, but make sure the blu-ray disc you burn to is an m-disc
>>515157265what's a file?
>>515157955When archaeologists from another part of the galaxy sift through our ashes they’re going to very confused when they get to the turn of the 21st century. Then they’re going to laugh and say we deserved to die and pop some cold ones.
>>515159832read this >>515160041M-discs use a special material but are either DVD or blu-ray standard. All blu-ray writers can burn to m-discs, only the DVD writers need the m-disc certification.
>>515159892Free Media Heck Yeahjust lots of organized links to piracy/preservation sites/tools. Pretty useful
>>515160147if you want to be a based archivist the real move is to write a history of these times and bury it well. that's what you want them to find.
>>515157265I burned hundreds of gigs of videos and music to DVD 20 years ago. They are all unreadable. Good thing I kept most of it on a NAS.
>>515160148I wish there were more resources for archivers. All I really have to add is that there is a front end GUI for Youtube DL that works great and you should be able to find it if you Google it.
>>515159832Also, CDs have less space than DVDs, and blu-rays have more space than both. There are actually specifications. DVDs can have 2 layers while CDs only have one layer. Blu-rays can have up to 4 layers (although special writers/expensive writers needed to burn on 4 layers) and the wavelength of laser is higher thus allowing for more storage on same area.
Burn
downloaded 700+ novels and gamesI don't have time to read or playnovels in epub format, lol
>>515160260use m-discs instead.
quick rundown?
>>515157265Nigger even name brand SSDs are down to $50/TB. Why the FUCK would I want to deal with discs?
>>515157265Why not use film, cassette tapes or larger reels if this that means that much to you? If not worth that effort then why the addiction to digital escapism? Why promote infinite screen time and reliance on items that do not exist? >>515160347I'd rather have a small shelf of books than whatever clutter you've downloaded.
>>515157265the 10cm size was chosen because that is sufficient to hold all of beethoven's 9th.we once had our priorities in order.now we let niggers stab pretty blonde girls in the neck.
>>515159692CD>DVD>BdrayThe reason being the size/density of the layer where the data is.As others said, pick Mdisc even for dvd : the dye layer on them is not organic, meaning they won't decay as quickly. That said I have many CDs that still play perfectly since the early 90's (all of them I guess?) and many IDE HDD from that era that still work.Rewritable disc use a photosensible layer to achieve this, meaning light COULD reset/decay data over decades exposed to the sun or a specific very high wattage lighting, but yes, it would happen before a non rewritable disc.Make a few copies.
>>515160619SSD bit rot/read errors during long term storage?
>>515160041Learned something new thanks. How's this device for burning or ripping?
>>515160148>>515160041I agree it is lasting for a looong time but the "1000 years" was pure marketing. that said, those disc will outlast you so as long as your grand-kids can re-burn them into a new disc, that's all fine
>>515162162My anecdotal experience is that issue is greatly exaggerated. Even if it were real, the risk is still worth it vs the logistics of sifting through a 4TB stack of 40 non-rewritable M-Discs ($400) compared to a simple Ctrl+f on one 4TB SSD ($200). Hell if you are really worried about it just buy 2 SSDs for the same price.
>>515157265xirs are probably the single worst generation of all time
>>515162961If non powered storage is the issue, noise is not an issue : 4tb HDD is like $50-$120 depending on brand. Always make more than one copy for archives. Data is cheap nowadays.
>>515160619filtered.Aye, mark me, ser: the humble burned disc is no peasant’s trifle, but a fortress of memory writ in fire upon plastic.Decentralized, thou say? Each DVD a lone knight errant, scattered in a thousand hiding-places; strike down one, yet the others endure.Contrast this with the fat lords of HDD and SSD, who hoard all treasures in one castle—when that gate cracks, all is lost in an instant.Predictability is a virtue. A DVD grows frail with scratches seen by thine own eye; a disk drive, like a treacherous ally, fails without warning, leaving naught but curses.Expense is but vanity. Flash and solid state promise speed, yet they bleed coin and betray their master sooner than the rustic disc. The cheap pretenders—thumb drives, cloud trinkets—are but glass swords: fragile, alluring, shattering when most needed. If a tale or truth be worth keeping, it deserves not a single vault, but ten thousand chapels of remembrance.Remember this, my lords: “If it be worth archiving, ‘tis worth the burning to ten thousand DVDs.”In the game of storage, one need not gold, nor speed, but redundancy, simplicity, and the patience of a careful steward.
>>515162961You can get a 30 TB 7,200 RPM drive for that price.
>>515164069HDDs (Hard Drives): Oft last 3–5 years; moving parts grind, failure sudden. Fit for hot storage (daily use), yet not for thine archives.SSDs (Solid State): Swifter, aye, lifespan 5–10 years; suited for hot or warm storage, but cells die unseen, as silent assassins.Thumb Drives (USB sticks): Fleeting trinkets, 2–5 years; good only as hot spares—never trust them with thy crown jewels.Regular DVDs (burned well, stored cool): Endure 20–50 years or more; stalwart in cold storage, cheap to replicate, decay seen by thine eyes.CDs: Of similar mettle to DVDs, 10–25 years, best for cold or medium storage in thine humble library.Cloud Storage: Life span not of years, but of contracts; beholden to merchant lords, fit only as warm storage whilst coffers hold coin.4–3–2–1 Rule (Tyrion’s twist): Four copies, three forms of media, two kept afar, one always at hand. A king’s ransom in safety.Lesson: A balanced feast—hot, warm, and cold—guards thy lore, yet none serve truer than a thousand plain discs. And mark me well—“If it’s worth burning, it’s worth burning to ten thousand DVDs.”

>>515164471I like your name 4-3-2-1. I do the same. 2 copies off site. Also vorta for borg is the best Linux backup software.
>>515163705>>515164245HDD is fine too. I've moved away from them myself so I no longer recommend them to others. Still logistically far superior to CDs.
>>515164652Using multiple media types is always recommended. HDD, SSD, and M-Disc
>>515164755Of course. I do redundant SSD copies on different brands in different enclosures stored in separate locations and my second is cloud storage. I stopped using HDD because of the speed and M-Disc is something everyone LOVES to talk about but probably only one person ITT even owns an optical drive.

>>515160619Discs are better for cold storage and less fragile when stored properly.
>>515166271I have Sega CD and PS1 games I burned to CD-Rs in the '90s that still work today.
>>515166058Wrap it in foil. But seriously, any EMP strong enough to damage an SSD while sitting remote inside an aluminum enclosure would cause other, more pressing issues. Like for example fire everywhere.
>>515166406One guy stored an m-disc blu ray outside for a year and the data was still readable. In the rain, direct sunlight. They are tough.

and anyways, using a variety of formats is best.ive just had 20TB go up in smoke all at once, 4 or 5 different devices both external and internal, hdds and ssds. that was all my back ups of backups etc!all in one cross country move.only thing left was ...thaasss ritte....the dvds and cds i had burned decade + earlier before cheap hdds and ssds! and so here i am.i seriously think theres a possibility i had my vehicle hit with a ray gun that fried all the circuits or sumshit i dunno, I mean 5 gd devices?? even the ssds? i dunno. But anyways...the dvds lasted so, next time i move i dont have to fear...D E C E N T R A L I Z A T I O NR E D U N D A N C Y if its worth saving then its worth burning to dvd 100 times. (-_-)And buying a new extra dvd burner every other month. (cheap redundancy)hq western paintings are a great example of things to archive
>>515157265So, what happened?
>>515166517theyre "creatives" and "lawyers" trying to muddy the waters and keep people dependant on hdds and ssds, im serious, be>>515166517cause i think theyre developingtech that easily fries these things and, once the sitrs are closed, they can fsu and since some are all cocky n shit (and cheap) they will not have burned to disk like they were warned and thought it was old fashioned or whatever and will fall right into the planned obsolescence trap that hdds and ssds are. telling you though: maybe itll just be a bug or virus but i think there a RIAA reason shills here are so fucking gung ho about shitty, fragile tech like (often mislabled and 'used going as new') i miss that 20TB jukebox. but its not worth the pain of losing it. So...now its just he creme de la creme...imostars of the lidasoiaf, roy dotrice (the best, lol, even the bad parts are endearing to me by now, machivellian and really the most genre spanning metapolitical introduction to european history you could ever, ever ask for. truly, the western world is blessed by this, seemingly hot pile a shit, and as i am suggesting, doesn't even know it. LoL. Maybe?)Anyways yrmv!!!Point Blank, lee marvin, plus 'archie' from all in the familyHell in the Pacific, sameCoherenceTriangleLockeetcEnter the VoidBut really just:Baraka on mushrooms SOTL and ASOIF
i get your point. but kind of pointless when sun is going fry all electronics soon
