In the Netherlands if you are violent and dangerous you get locked up until you are no longer considered a danger. We call that putting someone 'at the disposal of the state'. There is no set timescale for this, so you could be in for life. But on average I believe it's 7 or 8 years. But the ugly truth of course is that there is no actual cure to mental illness.
