The Irish sided with the Royalists and weren't looking for independence just to roll back the plantation of Ulster and equal rights for Catholics within the kingdom. The Williamite war again it was Irish loyal to the king looking for the land confiscation by Cromwell to be reversed and for equal rights for Catholics with the kingdom. The 1798 rebellion was an attempt at independence though and with French support and after that came the 1916 rising and war of independence.
