People were pretty emotional or angry. I think there hasn't been anything that I know of in my lifetime that affected people more. It pretty much impacted life for a lot of people. Economy, traveling, politics, etc. It created a big shift in the zeitgeist of the American society and the world. There was a lot of rapid change as things ramped up to war and the effects around it.
