The root of these issues is social media. It’s time to take a step back and ask ourselves if websites like Facebook, TikTok, etc. are really something that humanity needs. We’ve proven that we cannot handle it. Our brains crave the dopamine, the reactions, the likes. Our information is monetized and sold with and without our consent. General trends of happiness fall lower and lower, especially in children who are the most depressed they’ve ever been, scrolling for hours comparing themselves to people they’ll never even meet, not even knowing if what they see is real. Our brains weren’t meant to process this much information. You don’t need to worry about what happens in another country, state, city, hell, you barely even need to know what happens 15 minutes up the road. You need to worry about yourself, your family, and your immediate community. Instead, people carry around a phone in their pocket that connects them to the entire globe, and through that, they believe that they “know,” the entire globe, that the entire globe is a part of their world, when in reality you’re just seeing flash after flash after flash of random information, without enough time to process what you’re seeing and realizing that, wait a minute, that dead child in Uganda, that doesn’t affect me. At all. I don’t need to let it ruin my mental state. You don’t know the people you see online. They’re not your friends, they don’t know your name, you’re just another number to people but youre tricking your brain into thinking that you’re forming connections. It’s really time to start advocating for a reduction in this sort of applications, the harm they’re causing humanity cannot be understated.
