I care about charlie kirk about 600% more than I did a few days ago. I knew he was some kind of political speaker or opinion person on the right. Opinionated. Outspoken. Asshole. But I don't make a habit of listening to people just to be offended by them.When I found out he died, especially at a political speech rally, I suddenly cared about him a whole lot more because I don't think we should shoot people for saying nasty shit. In fact, I think I can say that is precisely where our responsibility to the first amendment kicks in. Yeah a whole lot of people call first amendment when it doesn't apply like private businesses or the court of public opinion. It's a limitation on the government, not us. But fuck that. I think all citizens are obligated to defend people's right to NOT BE KILLED for speech. We have our government respect that right because we supposedly believe in it, not because we are under a grudging obligation to it.So yeah, I did go from not caring about the guy to crying over him because I THOUGHT we lived in a country where you could say what you want without worrying about dying because of it and apparently I'm wrong.
