Poland has launched one if its biggest military exercises of the year—Iron Defender-25—to hone NATO preparedness for a potential attack.The maneuvers, which are set to run until the end of September, will involve around 34,000 personnel, including the NATO multinational battlegroup based in Poland and other allied forces, among them the U.S. V Corps. In addition to the troops, about 600 pieces of military equipment will be used to practice readiness to defend Poland on land, at sea, and in the air, the General Command of the Armed Forces announced. The main thrust of the training drive will be provided by the 18th Mechanized Division—dubbed the ‘Iron Division,’ from which the drills take their name—though all the services will take part, including special forces, cyber-warfare units, and the volunteer Territorial Defense Force. The aim of the exercises is to “verify the interoperability of the Armed Forces... in a multi-domain environment” the defense ministry said on its website. It added that the training will focus on integrating the country’s ‘East Shield’ defenses designed to deter and defend against a Russian attack, as well as the use of newly acquired strike and reconnaissance hardware. The drills plan to make use of battlefield lessons learned from the ongoing war in Ukraine, but are not “directed against any state,” the ministry said. Instead, they are intended to “strengthen the defense capabilities of Poland and NATO, but also to demonstrate readiness for collective defense and deterrence of any potential adversary in the context of current geopolitical challenges.” Although the drills will be held mainly on training grounds, military authorities said combat and logistics vehicles would be moved around the country by rail and road and said the public should expect to see convoys of both wheeled and tracked vehicles on highways.

NATO is coasting on their supposed tech superiority from the 80s and 90s. The fact is that neglect has gutted the military capability of European NATO, and a sudden boost of spending by a couple of percent of GDP isn’t going to fix it.
