This cannot be ignored. At last night’s Lakeshore vs. Kalamazoo Central JV football game, a Kalamazoo Central player body-slammed a Lakeshore player after the play. The Lakeshore player was rushed to the hospital with a serious back injury. UPDATE: Confirmed that his back is broken in 2 places. Sending prayers to him and his family on behalf of the whole Southwest Michigan community. This wasn’t an accident. It was intentional. No penalties. No accountability. Coaches and refs stood by. No flags thrown. The offending player was allowed to play the duration of the game.

The victims family was thrown out of the game by KC security as they were trying to leave to bring their son, who had multiple spine fractures, to the ER. Kalamazoo Central coaches even posted pre-game hype videos with music encouraging violence and then celebrated afterward.We are at a critical time in our country. Purposeful acts of violence are too often met with no accountability. In this case, there were multiple adults in charge- coaches, referees, school leaders- who could have stepped in at any point- and instead they did absolutely nothing until the public demnded it. The message to young adults is that bad choices don’t bring consequences, and winning matters more than respect, safety, or integrity. We hope this player who committed the assault gets the help he needs and grows from this. Enough is enough. #MHSAA and school officials must step in and hold Kalamazoo Central and any other players that engage in this kind of behavior from any school or community accountable before more kids are seriously hurt.
