Because if NATO takes Ukraine then it will be able to culturally destroy Russia. Young Russians were already massive westaboos. Russia is extremely unstable, there is no clear line of succession. The goal of the West is to turn Russia into a democracy. The more hostility Russia can create between itself and the West, the less likely that this plan succeeds. If Putin had done nothing then Ukraine would be a NATO EU democracy and Russia would be full of agent provocateurs trying to start a Euromaidan there like they did in Ukraine.Also, he is probably aware that the West is collapsing socially, so he probably feels like getting us into another Vietnam will cause total disarray.
