The communist in Vietnam were literally just hyper nationalistic young men who wanted foreigners out of their country. There is very little difference in the mind set of a viet cong in 1968 and a young white American male today. Many turn to nazism or white nationalism because those provide the most likely route for them to achieve their goal(self survival). Most Vietcong did not give a fuck about communism. I guarantee a majority of them had no idea who Karl Marx even was. Communists were just the only group willing to help them in their fight.
