Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi said his narcotics detectives put "a serious dent" in the trafficking of heroin in the parish with the arrest last Tuesday of a Plaquemine man. Dawud Seals, 37, 23525 Marshall St., was arrested when detectives conducted a search warrant at his home and was charged on numerous drug charges. Seals was booked with possession of Schedule I narcotics, possession with the intent to distribute Schedule II narcotics and possession of drug paraphernalia. Last week, 18th Judicial District Court Judge Alvin Batiste set his bond at $71,000 for the three charges. However, since Seals had a bench warrant out for his arrest because he failed to appear in court for his arraignment on charges he received in March 2016, the original bond on the charges he received then was increased from $30,500 to $60,000.The 2016 charges Seals still faces are two counts of possession with the intent to distribute Schedule I narcotics, possession of Schedule II narcotics and possession of Schedule III narcotics. Stassi said he bonded out of jail when he posted the $30,500 bond, but his failure to appear gave the judge reason to increase it. Stassi said despite the high bond, Seals' bond has been revoked so he will remain in jail until his trial on a date yet to be determined. "Seals was one of main distributors of heroin in Iberville Parish and I'm proud of the work my narcotics detectives did to get him behind bars again," Stassi said. "With the recent rash of overdoses and overdose deaths, I hope Seals' arrest will help to stop some of those tragedies," the sheriff continued. With heroin now often being mixed with the deadly drug Fentanyl, "I hope people understand just how dangerous heroin is today."
