You can't draw a line on a map that separates Russian and Belarusian cultures, that's what's important. Just like you can't draw a line on a map that separates North Russian and South Russian cultures. The border obviously matters somewhat, as on one side the people are told that they are Belarusian and maybe learned Belarusian in school, but that border isn't very old at all, and most Belarusians speak Russian anyway. The way I see it, we come from one root, there was neither enough time to establish a real divide nor there wasn't a single event like mutual population transfer. So we're one people.
