Water is the most important thing for hydration and cooking so you'll want purification tablets in addition to whatever you're carrying so you can refill easily. You'll probably want to look like a tourist or a hiker so grey and green clothing can be good options, surplus camo without anti-infrared capability not so much. Getting good hiking gear is a must, get used to walking and staying hydrated. Having as much money is another consideration, consider buying diamonds and hiding them under your skin

Some stay overnight around the border region, but there are always blind spots. Don't linger around the border, if you're committed cross the border once you get close to it, borders are usually monitored by cameras even if the closest people are an hour or two away. If you're serious about doing this you should be leaving now, once they start seriously implementing the draft the border gets secured tighter.
