At grade 1 or 2 I remember sitting in a strange type of audio room, with a few other peers ( no more than 4 or 8) in a strange small classroom with like an audio room style layout, 1 sided glass window, probably where our teacher observed, with inside the classroom were headphones, square wooden boards with those nail pegs, and rubber bands. Yep, started in 1st or 2nd grade. I don't remember a lot outside of going to a special class maybe once a week or something not sure how often. I don't remember much in 2nd grade but I do remember we made a lunar lander mockup, it was pretty sweet. 3rd grade moved from NE to Socal, was put into the same type of deal out there, there were only a couple of us in my grade. We would go take special tests, don't remember what about or anything else about the program. 4th grade moved to norcal, the program there was basically a book club for advanced kids, I remember having to read Oliver Twist and discuss the book. I quit in 5th grade to play sports, couldn't do both at the same time as the program was after school. I never took any AP course but I was definitely smarter than most who did. I just saw it as extra busywork.busy work. I lost a lot of brain cells playing high school football, never let your kids do it. I didn't realize why I was getting dumber until it was too late. Big regret and my memory is pretty shit now.
It was a response to the dumbing down of public school curricula: instead of tracking bright kids into a prep-school-level curriculum, they had them play with computers and do crap like Future Problem Solving. All very modern and made the parents happy.

In grade school. After the tests they suggested my parents move me up a grade. Mom said no. Instead I went to the Jesuits retreat house ( didnt know its role at the time) on some Fridays afternoons. They taught us how to play Chess and Risk. Some teachers were Jesuit Brothers, some were not. They also gave us actual IQ tests. Again, they encouraged my parents to move me up, but Mom said no. ( this is maybe the only time I ever saw my parents have a disagreement of sorts. He felt some pride in my scores and felt moving me up should be considered.) I went for about a year. Dont remember stopping for any reason. Later when HS came I was immediately admitted to a top private Jesuit school for boys. I hated it. Didn't go. I was GATE in Fresno in the 80s. Moved to Az. in 90s. Failed everything. Recruited by Marines high GT off the charts high. Built infrared and Laser systems. Have a medical license, but I dont use it.
