The zumwalt class has been a total disaster by every possible metric
With stealth technology proving less and less reliable with every passing year and even the USAF slowly backing away from it.
One must question the concept of a stealth ship to begin with.

No this is unique to the zumwalt class.
The reason is that the ship is designed to have a minimal radar cross section because stealth.

Oh by the way those two lumps on the front are where its guns are supposed to be. But the guns were never installed because the ammunition for them was cancelled.

Of course the problem is this ship was intended to operate in a near shore capacity providing fire support.
Which would mean you could easily spot it visually from the shore.
The stealth aspect has been debated to hell and back though. Judging by the Navy not adopting this thinking with other ships they seem to have said "nah bruh"

Honestly it did sort of work though.
The radar cross section is tiny for a ship its size and its acoustics are on par with a US navy submarine.
It's just that surface vessels can't stay stealthy once they're anywhere near land or another ship.

is that the ship they initially wanted like 100 of but then the costs skyrocketed so much the amount of ships ordered kept getting cut down until the order was like 12 ships but then the ammo got so expensive due to the small number being built so they removed the main gun and now there's like 6 ships total?

I always found the concept of a stealth warship to be completely stupid. This thing can be seen with the naked eye miles and miles away. Any airplane flying over it is going to see it like a bright white dot in the middle of a black page. Sonar will probably find it too. You're better off either making it a submersible, or small like a cigarette boat.

Half of the point of a warship is to project power. You *want* the enemy to know it's there because you want them to retreat from it. The enemy should see it and feel a sense of dread. The value in a warship is that it controls whatever space is next to it, much like how an airplane controls the space under it.

kek i looked it up, it costs 4 billion+ per ship (excluding R&D costs), absolutely insane. it boggles the mind how much money is evaporated in western MIC's yet countries such as china and russia manage to build nuclear triads + the rest of a military on a fraction of the budget. i wonder if a major confrontation will eventually force western countries to just nuke private MIC's altogether by nationalizing everything like china/russia and most of the rest of the world.

It is the whole damn reason they station large warships off the coast of places thinking about starting shit. Isn't this common knowledge?

And it's not just Navy... the Army has their own version of it where they'll put a large tank somewhere that's taking sniper fire.

TLDR - yes
>>
>>517663432
>sonar
I hope you meant radar. Problem with ships is that their own radar gives them away from a far longer range than the naked eye does. When you see something at the horizon, you're basically at close range relative to modern weaponry.

There's also some additional things people with no maritime or naval experience miss. Missiles and torpedoes have ranges far longer than people commonly assume. We're talking hundreds of miles for missiles and tens of miles for torpedoes.
The point of missile cruisers is that they have a range that's way beyond the horizon, and this is decades old tech and torpedoes are centuries old as a concept.

I'd argue that drone carrier ships will make an appearance for the same reason torpedoes took over naval warfare. You can just fire and forget, and you can't detect those tiny things.
>>

>>
>>517662118
The concept of radar stealth only exists when radar is the most powerful battlefield tool. When we have continuous globe-spanning HD satellite coverage, you're going to need to physically hide something from visual detection anymore in order for any full-spectrum stealth, I think. Stealth was dominant against radar, but we have more options now despite radar still being the main tool.

>>
>>517664304
I don't know shit about fuck. All I know is that historically the whole value in a warship is knowing it's out there: for the enemy, to make them feel dread. For your men, to make them feel courage, as the ship is a physical tangible projection of your nation's power. Even if you're deep in shit and fighting hand to hand, you can see your flagship and hear the thunder of its cannons and you *know* that the enemy doesn't stand a chance because you already own the battlefield.

>>
>>517666024
It's true. A lot of nations had an entire doctrine of building a navy just to keep it at port. Power projection has always been a key reason for using ships. A (functional) stealth boat is going to have another type of power projection than a large ass aircraft carrier.

But you're right in principle that there's many ways to detect ships. Sonars aren't actually that bad of an example. The reason radars are so popular is resolution. In perfect conditions, you might detect something with a sonar from a really far away region, but you basically need multiple sonars for triangulation because you don't really have that much information.

That's all this stuff boils down to. If they manage to make a ship that radar waves bounce off of, it has advantages. It projects power simply by not being detectable by radar.

No the railguns were a proposal after the original guns were scrapped.
The original gun was designed to use a specific ammo type that was to be developed specifically for it.
After the guns were scrapped due to the absurd cost of the ammo the navy went "hey it has a powerplant big enough for these railguns we're trying to do" and the proposal became put railguns on it.
But then the railguns got scrapped

So now its hypersonic missile cells

a lot of people don't seem to understand the philosophy behind aesthetics, i'd recommend reading Friedrich Schiller's "Aesthetic Letters".

tl;dr
There is Nature and Spirit. Inner city black thugs are an example (one of many) of Nature. It's opposite would be an example of Spirit (hard to find these days since the world has largely ignored Spirit/Form and only focuses on utility and sexual matter ("sex appeals to Nature and natural instincts, so sex is everywhere now because it sells, and is thus utility, but it degrades the society and the Spirit)

Civilization was originally built on the foundation of Spirit and Form, and civilizations crumble that lose sight of this and revert back to physical nature and primitivism.
