I started doing hobby woodworking 5 years ago. Out of nowhere. Now I have a whole range of hobby and semi-professional equipment and do a ton of maintenance, repairs and even building stuff myself. For example, I built a table and two benches for my yard last month. A couple months before that I built a cabinet for my parents' home, simple stuff, to put some old clothes in for long term storage. Repaired the wooden door sill of my living room the other day. It is indescribably fulfilling to build things with your hands and some tools.

I dislike working with metal, but I am planning on learning some stuff about next year. I'll get a cheap welding machine and just do random shit for experience.
>>
>>517669289
Depends.
I’m better off paying a mechanic because they have a lower hourly rate than me and they have all the tools.
I often fix electronics myself because I already have a little workstation set up for soldering etc. even though it’s no cost effective a lot of the time.
>>

all depends where the plug is really. for some reason mine tend to stick deeper inside the ubend so your approach can't work for me, though its definitely useful if you've got one of those long stiff shits that just wont go down, know what i mean? they jam in the bend and just fucking sit there pointing at you. its almost as if they are laughing.

>>517669289
Yes. Almost always. I did take my car to an exhaust shop about 10 years ago because he had some equipment that I didn't have. (He did a very nice job.)
>>
>>517669289
Why are you still paying the automotive cartel? Don't you need tabs an "insurance" that are mandated by law for that? You have to have a license to drive and pay to renew it? You bear the yo-yo in gas prices? You pay whatever the aftermarket retailers ask for replacement parts? What are you, some kind of cock-gobbler? What a faggot.

>just buy tools from China, bro

being able to do some simple welding has helped me out a lot. its very easy to make strong things like garden tools, all kinds of fixtures, repair stuff on cars (my exhaust rusts out every year lol), stuff like that. can definitely recommend either a oxy acetyline setup if you see a cheap set up, or invest in a stick welder or a spool fed mig that doesn't need the extra inert gas bottle, because that drives your cost up.

see if you can score some free metal scraps from a shop somewhere to practice with. even thin sheet metal is useful.
>>
>>517669289
Fun Fact!: Every time you fix your own stuff you deny the criminals masquerading as "government" some tax revenue. (This is why this is political.)
>>
>>517671156
My work is not presentable enough to sell, it's very coarse, mainly because I like it that way, there is a lot of charm in a rough looking wooden surface. I will keep making stuff for myself and my family though.

Tools are fucking great. Can't stress enough how much something like pic related helps around the yard and even inside the home. You don't really need specialized stuff unless you dive into furniture making. An electric screwdriver, a drill, an electric saw, a circular saw, an angle grinder, all you need.
>>
>>517671105
>the float stopped dropping when I flushed.
oh yeah we had that once. cant remember what i did to fix it. just cleaned it all out and messed with the adjusting screw and stuff. stay strong
>>

yeah nice job. you can already do quite a bit with even a fairly low amp stick set up. they are often not the prettiest welding jobs and usually need a bit of clean up but you'll get the job done. id really like to go from my gas welding setup to a TIG because those are basically like a electric version of the gas welder in a way, but the jump in price to one of those is too much for me. probably get a cheap stick and see how it goes, maybe a MIG.

either way its all super useful. just do some video guides on using whatever you get and read some training manuals for more indepth info. there are plenty to be found online.

have fun

>>517671792
its a fun little job. i always manage to drop a bunch of old oil on the drive so my tip is not be a cheapskate and actually get a decent drain pan or something.
>>
>>517671792
Based. You can do it. Dont overfill. Dont overtighten the drainbolt. Get some oil on the rubber seal on the new filter. Maybe a new copper ring for the drainbolt.
Handtighten the new oilfilter.

I put a new fuse in the other day to get the cigarette lighter working again. Trivial but it still took a bit or reading, fact-finding etc not to mention a right bastard to get at under the glove compartment. I'm more handy with non-car related things carpentry, plumbing a bit of bricklaying etc

I still I could do what you're doing though.

I ordered a new original sump plug (the ring thing) as well.

Ive looked up all the torque values for the oil tank bolt and the filter. Going to use my torque wrench.

Do I add some oil into the filter before putting it in?

I paid like a billion to have a garage change my tyres once and they torqued the damn lug nuts on so hard I hand to jump on the damn bar to get them off when I switched back to summer tyres.

When I use my torque wrench with the specified values I can easily get the lug nuts off with a bit of force.

Yeah, obviously. First coupe cars I always bought the factory service manual(very important to get the OEM FACTORY version), and while I still do pick one up for my project/secondary vehicle(for the occasional specialty information needed), for the most part once you’ve learned how to do something competently, you don’t need to reference a service manual, you just dig in and do it.

Do you know by any chance if the service manual has instructions on disassembling the doors?

Someone must have opened a door or something into mine when parked once because it suddenly had a bump in it. I found replacement doors from part sellers decently cheap, but only the door itself. The rest I would have to take off the old door and put on the new one. Feels a bit intimidating, but maybe if I had the service manual with instructions I could study it.

>Do I add some oil into the filter before putting it in?
You can but it's optional. (I never bother.) But it is important that you moisten the new oil filter gasket with a little oil. Also, if you like, you can rinse out the crankcase with a little diesel oil (or fresh oil) (I use a couple quarts of diesel and then drain it out again) before you install the new oil and refill with new oil. Keeps the crank case oil clean. Also (also) it is important to not overfill the oil level. Leave it a little short if you're not sure and top it off later.

I generally look them up in shop manuals. You can also use generic bolt torque charts for some of these things...

https://www.portlandbolt.com/technical/bolt-torque-chart/

https://boltdepot.com/Fastener-Information/Bolts/US-Recommended-Torque

It's better to use the manufacturer torque specs when you can. Remember, small bolts and nuts use less torque. (You'll get the feel after you snap a few bolts and have to drill them out.) Don't mixup your foot lbs and inch lbs. (Every so often the shop manual will have a typo. So pay attention and be careful.)

I honestly do, whenever possible. My fuel injection system went tits up last month and my mechanic had to fix it. Changed me 160, which I'm guessing is ok. He's a white guy and don't think he'd fuck with me.
Other shit, like replacing my busted tail light or the side view mirror I just bought replacements off amazon and installed them myself. I know one mechanic wanted to charge me 500 for replacing my power window controls. So I went on amazon, found the console for the door frame for about 25 bucks and popped the old one off and put the new one in. Fixed.

Shops are notorious for over tightening lug bolts.
(Typically lug bolts should be torqued somewhere between 65 - 100 ft lbs.)

Pour a bunch of laundry soap in your clogged toilet. Powdered laundry detergent works too.
Pour warm water in. Not too hot or too fast or you'll Crack the bowl.
Wait a while and then plunge the hell out of it.
Your toilet will not only be unclogged, but your drain and bowl will be sparkling clean

I need a new kerosene tank.
They are attached to the heating system by a SINGLE connection that you can remove with a wrench. An old tank can be moved by two people. A new tank can be put in place and attached to the heating system by two people.

I guess this would all take an hour max? A supplier wanted to charge €1200 for what I assume is two people working for an hour.

I told them its two expensive. They said they are a business and have to make money somehow. Okay ill do it myself.

matter of fact, just before coming to 4chinks, about 30 minutes ago, my lawnmowever broke, and I replaced the cord launcher (or whatever it's called) by myself today, just by looking at youtube videos.
im kind of proud because its the first time i ever fixed something on this lawnmower
I also fixed some furniture today as well, its a storage furniture on wheel, and the wheel broke. I unriveted the wheel, and put a spare one together, riveted the bitch again, and now everyone's impressed at home. feelsgoodman

It's really this, if I have the tools I'll do it myself, if I don't I'll go get someone who does. I had to change the wheel bearings on my car once but I don't have a hydraulic press or a powerful enough impact driver to use one of those bearing puller tools so i had a shop with a press do that. For something that doesn't need tools I don't already have like changing the struts or controls arms or flushing the brakes or changing the oil I can just do it myself

Nigger, the people that professionally fix shit think fixing shit is for peasants and their time is worth more than that too.

That is why they are barely employed losers, getting by on the occasional job where they rip some gullible person off and we have to fix our own shit because very few people are earning €500 to €1000 an hour doing what is actually very easy work.

I console myself by pretending the money the tradesmen would like to charge is money I am putting into my own pocket by doing the work myself but the reality is, the work is worth 10s of dollars an hour at most. The same money I earn in my full time job.
>>
>>517678635
i pulled & fitted a wheel bearing without a press, just a hardened steel threaded rod and some assorted scrap metal bushings, to make the refitting easier i put the bearing carrier in the oven and the bearing in the freezer, i needed a 5 ft steel extension bar to turn the nuts on the threaded rod & i had to bolt the bearing carrier to an immovable object since i broke my vice in half on the first attempt

Oh and I said its work worth 10s of euros an hour. Trades men just try to charge hundreds, sometimes thousands for it. That is the work im doing and not paying tradesmen to do. So it probably is the most simple shit.
>>
>>517681970

you did use the right nut? 5ft bar gives you about 1000Nm. Nothing on a car should be that tight.

there shouldn't be water in the dash. Either windshield sealant is leaking or more likely there is water dripping down the airducts or aircon pipes that come through the bulkhead between you and the engine. First thing I'd check is the seal on the air-filter housing tho it varies wildly model to model.

wait for it to be dry then check the drainage holes on the plastic trim where the windscreen sits are clear. Then run water through a hose all around the windscreen. If no water then the leak is likely under the bonnet somewhere that pipes or ducts pass through the firewall/bulkhead. Look for rustmarks.
Happy hunting leafbro. Water leaks are a cunt.

yeah don't overtighten shit. that's the number 1 mistake new wrenchers do. even if you're skinny, it's easy to strip threads. as long as it's snug it's not gonna fall out. there is always that thought in your head to "give it one more quarter turn" and you always need to ignore that thought. been there done that too many times to admit. also like the other guy said, underfilled oil is better than overfilled. you can always add some, but too much oil pressure is big bad.
>>
>>517685048
Is that a dryer?
>>
>>517669289
Depends. If it's an eBike I have to pay for equipment that costs more than my eBike to fix it and also there's only one place that will even fix it and they stopped taking in bikes that they themselves didn't sell, so at this point when my eBikes break down I just abandon them or sell them to someone else for very little. A regular bicycle though I can easily fix on my own, but then the shops that can do it are also common and do it cheap and sometimes even free. I hate doing everything myself all my life, used to think it was the way to be, until I realized how much time and money I was always losing because of this and that it's far better for me to have someone else fix something while I work at something I'm good at. Why lose an entire day's worth of income or worse maybe a couple days because I'm fucking around with trying to fix something and why buy tools that just will be stolen by mehtheads and which make it impossible to walk through my garage that is already totally full? At this point I even rent a rototiller for my garden when I need it and I also remember when I had to do a lot of wood cutting my multiple chainsaws were costing me a lot to fix and use whereas just renting one from Home Depot allowed me to get the job done quicker and cheaper and them fixing them up is there problem.
