They like quite specific conditions which are hard to replicate. They like high pH, fairly loose, well draining soil. They general feed on decomposing grass. Manure can help to raise pH levels so they can generally be found in grazing meadows where sheep or cows graze, but if the right conditions are present they will grow anywhere with grass. I've never once seen them growing in woodland.For example, a good place where libs grow near me is a slope/hill in a field below a graveyard. They seem to really love the decomposing body run off, it must make good acidic conditions, and because it's on a slope the soil drains nicely. They also need it to be close to freezing temperatures overnight, but not have had a frost, and a good amount of rainfall.
