On May 3, 2025, at approximately 11:15 a.m., Columbia Police Department (CPD) responded to a 911 call in the 2700 block of Cypress Street, Columbia, South Carolina, where 22-year-old Logan Federico of Waxhaw, North Carolina, was found deceased from a gunshot wound; an autopsy by the Richland County Coroner’s Office confirmed the death as a homicide. Federico was asleep in a bedroom of a rental home at the time of the shooting and was described by CPD Chief Skip Holbrook as a "true victim." CPD investigators determined that 30-year-old Alexander Dickey broke into an adjacent home first, stealing vehicle keys, several items, and a firearm. He then forced entry into the rental home where Federico was located, stole a wallet containing credit and debit cards, entered her bedroom, and fired the fatal shot with the stolen firearm before fleeing in the stolen vehicle. Dickey, who has over 40 prior charges, drove to West Columbia, used the stolen cards for purchases, and attempted further fraudulent transactions in Saluda County. Dickey was apprehended later that day in Gaston after fleeing into woods, stealing and wrecking another vehicle, forcing entry into a residence, and setting it on fire; Lexington County Sheriff's Office surrounded the home, took him into custody following a surrender order, and he received hospital treatment before being transferred to CPD for a multi-hour interview. A Lexington County judge denied bond on related charges. Dickey faces the following CPD charges: murder; two counts of first-degree burglary; two counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime; possession of a firearm by a prohibited person (potentially including federal charges); two counts of grand larceny; grand larceny of a motor vehicle; and three counts of financial transaction card theft.
