Proto-Indo-European had 8 cases, and yet they didn't even have writing. Sanskrit also has 8 cases and is the language that is the most similar to Proto-Indo-European of all attested languages. Picrel: "river" in Sanskrit. Proto-Indo-Europeans spoke a similar and equally complex language, without having writing. By comparison Latin has 6 cases.
