A young couple in Bhopal, India, has initiated divorce proceedings after repeated failed attempts to get their pets, a dog and a cat, to get along in the family home.

According to sources from a Bhopal Family Court, the unnamed couple initially bonded over their love for animals, became friends, and later married, so it is more than a little ironic that the love for their respective pets may be what breaks them apart. After tying the knot in December 2024, the couple moved in together, and that’s when things started going south. The wife said her husband’s dog harassed and even attacked her cat repeatedly, while he claimed he had made it clear before marriage that the woman would not bring her pets when they moved in together, adding that her cat would hover over their fish tank, creating tension in the house.

While the woman refused to give up her cat and kept accusing her husband’s dog of being aggressive, the husband sided with his canine companion, claiming that it was his wife’s pet that was causing trouble. The couple was referred to counseling several times, and their relatives tried brokering some kind of reconciliation, but the two newlyweds continued to side with their respective pets and ultimately cited irreconcilable differences as grounds for a divorce.

“People seek companionship in pets, sometimes placing them above human relationships,” family counselor Shail Awasthi said. “When both partners refuse to adjust, marriages like these collapse. It reflects a growing trend of people taking relationships lightly, believing that pets can substitute for human bonds.”

Family Court officials noted that this unusual case illustrated “the profound problem of growing emotional dependence on animals amid growing social isolation.”

They seem both to be obsessed with animals. They deserve each other and seem made for each other. They should not get divorced. Instead they should just get spayed and neutered.

I'm just happy they aren't making more jeets.

Marriage is for delusional fools
