The revolution blew that plan apart quickly by making them spend lots to hold the colonies against the colonists themselves It didn't make sense for Britain to throw good money after bad if their goal was short term profit (or even just cutting costs). Money always matters, but other factors often dominate in warmaking decisions. Strategic positioning or wanting to demonstrate military dominance to rivals or other potential rebels are often more significant concerns, so this method of winning doesn't often work so well in other conflicts. It only works when one side needs limited war and the other doesn't (and not always then if the limited side is too much stronger).

People were coming from europe and then, after being forced into the wilderness to afford land, creating a homestead or joining a local village. To this day we're still paying for the British under-funding our religious institutions leading to religious radicalization and progressivism through the removal of things like college educations for priests
