Tl;dr no one has any idea what is actually happening on the ground. Pushing some guys forward here or there, for either side, is meaningless if you can't consolidate the gains. Otherwise they just run out of ammo and die. The fighting will continue until one side (probably Ukraine) decides Verdun #578 isn't worth reducing coverage everywhere else to nothing. Russia is absolutely in the better position. They can flood the area and Ukraine just thins everywhere else to deal with it.
