Trained civi's (hunters, competition shooters) can do 600yd or more and in if they actually take the time to learn and you can easily learn to engage past 1000 yds if they put some extra practice. So the civi's only advantage over the military is range, the .277 greatly reduces this advantage. 5.56 doesn't give as accurate shooting out that far, and you have way more issues with wind that the average. 308 or 6.5cm. .277 is just as good or better, and their 1-8lpvo tells you the hold you need to make for different distances, so you can quickly return accurate fire at 600-800yd with your biggest issues being windy days or inherent inaccuracy of the rifle. Which is still as accurate as most hunting rifles.

And no military ever throws out all their old weapon overnight. So switching cartridges does inevitably complicate logistics.But, most importantly, the rifle and cartridge are trash that are going to get replaced even more quickly than the m14 the second they're put to actual use. Wasting all that time and money switching over to an obviously doomed platform and then having to waste even more when switching back to something that makes sense is treason as far as I'm concerned.
